    Notes: Two monochromators for high-energy synchrotron radiation have been studied at the elliptical multipole wiggler beamline BL08W of SPring-8. Both monochromator crystals are bent and indirectly water-cooled. In the 100 keV monochromator an efficient cooling scheme is employed. A monochromatic beam is successfully focused using new benders for the 100 keV and 300 keV monochromators. Measured radii of curvature of the bent crystal agree qualitatively with calculation.

    Notes: An X-ray spectrometer for high-resolution Compton profile measurements using 90–120 keV X-rays has been designed and constructed at SPring-8. A Cauchois-type triply layered bent-crystal analyzer was employed for the energy analysis. A novel use of a solid-state detector with a large active area was devised as a position-sensitive detector. A resolution of 0.10 atomic units in electron momentum has been achieved at an incident X-ray energy of 115 keV. A Compton profile of a single crystal of Nb was measured with a counting rate of 30 counts s−1 at the Compton peak, which demonstrates that the spectrometer is capable of measuring Compton profiles of heavy-element materials.

    Notes: A volumetric heating method is applied to the pre-slit placed on the SPring-8 standard-undulator beamline front ends in order to handle the very intensive photon beam. A graphite block is used as the radiation-absorbing body, which is brazed to a cooling holder made of oxygen-free high-conductivity copper. Various experiments and calculations have been carried out on the strength of the brazed joint. Comparisons between the experiments and calculations show that static fracture of the joint would not occur even under the highest heat load. The outgassing properties of the graphite blocks are also presented here.

    Notes: The advent of synchrotron radiation sources for well polarized and high-energy X-rays offers new opportunities for exploiting Compton scattering spectroscopy as a tool for investigating the electronic and magnetic structures of materials. Recent high-resolution Compton scattering experiments show the unique capability for the study of Fermiology-related issues and electron–electron correlation effects. Intense, high-energy and circularly polarized X-ray sources have improved magnetic Compton scattering spectroscopy from the point of statistical accuracy and momentum resolution. As a next advance, a high-energy inelastic scattering beamline dedicated to Compton scattering spectroscopies is being constructed at SPring-8. The light source is an elliptic multipole wiggler with a periodic length of 12 cm. The beamline includes two experimental stations: one is for high-resolution spectroscopy using 100–150 keV X-rays and the other is for magnetic Compton scattering experiments using circularly polarized 300 keV X-rays. The use of such high-energy X-rays makes it possible to carry out experiments efficiently on samples including heavier elements, such as high-Tc superconductors and 4f and 5f magnetic materials.

    Notes: A compact and high-heat-load absorber for the SPring-8 X-ray undulator beamline has been developed and installed. It consists of an upper heat-absorber part and a lower photon duct part, which are configured together in a water-cooled GlidCop body. The absorber part has a horizontal notch shape and the photon duct part forms a rectangular open channel under the absorber part. Two types of absorber are designed: one, with wire mesh channels, is 486 mm long, 70 mm high and 64 mm wide; the other, with smooth-bore channels, is 610 mm long, 75 mm high and 70 mm wide. Thermal and stress analyses show that they withstand the 12.3 kW heat load and the maximum heat flux of 940 W mm−2 at normal incidence.

    Notes: A systematic study to determinine the allowable aperture size of the front end for the SPring-8 high-heat-load undulator beamlines has been performed, from the viewpoint of protecting the front-end Be window from thermomechanical failure, and based on the results of ANSYS finite-element analyses. These results have revealed that the allowable aperture size of the front end ranges approximately from 1.06 mm2 to 3.2 mm2 depending on the K-parameter and the filter thickness.

    Notes: SPring-8 front ends have a novel structure which makes it easy to rearrange them and exchange the components. The structure has a common support for all the components except X-ray beam-position monitors and lead collimators. The alignment of the common support as well as the components was carried out with an accuracy of 0.25 mm in the vertical and horizontal directions. Replaceable pumping systems have also been placed on the common support and have achieved a vacuum of 2 × 10−8 Pa at the upstream part of the front ends without synchrotron radiation. During the commissioning with synchrotron radiation, the pumping systems displayed good pumping-down characteristics. Commissioning has been successfully performed for four standard in-vacuum X-ray undulators and three bending-magnet-beamline front ends up to July 1997. Measurements of temperature rise show that absorber, pre-slits and XY slits can handle the anticipated maximum heat load at a ring current of 100 mA.
