Notes: Crystals of the 52 kDa monomeric Escherichia coli cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase complexed with ATP and cysteine have been grown by hanging-drop vapor diffusion from solutions containing ammonium sulfate as the precipitating agent. The crystals form long hexagonal rods in the space group P321 with unit-cell dimensions a = b = 82.3, c = 168.9 Å. There is one enzyme molecule in the asymmetric unit. A complete native data set has been collected from a rotating-anode source to a resolution of 2.7 Å at 103 K, with an Rmerge of 6.7%.

Notes: The dispersion equation for the four-wave case of X-ray diffraction is obtained in a compact form. The intermediate region between two-wave and arbitrary many-wave cases of diffraction is examined.

Notes: The results of experiments in which an anomalous form of the Pendellösung fringes has been discovered together with a classical one are presented. The general theory of X-ray spherical-wave diffraction has been constructed taking into account the change of phase relationships for radiation propagating in vacuum. An explanation of the observed experimental results and classification of possible manifestations of the Pendellösung effect are given. New data concerning the previously discovered phenomenon of focusing are presented.

Notes: A general formula is obtained for the intensity distribution in the film behind a single crystal in the case of spherical-wave X-ray multiple diffraction. The theory takes into account the phase shift of the waves not only inside the crystal but also in the vacuum before and after the crystal along the wave path source-crystal-film of length L. The topographic images are calculated in the case of (220/242/044/\bar 244/\bar 202) six-beam diffraction of Cu Kα radiation in a germanium crystal of thickness 0.2 mm for different values of L. The enhancement of the anomalous transmission effect is weakly displayed on the topographs because of strong scattering of the radiation inside the crystal. The intensity distribution depends on L. The possibility is shown of focusing X-rays to a considerable extent.

Notes: Sets of integral equations are obtained that describe the X-ray diffraction in defective crystals. A simple description of defects is suggested both for weakly and strongly distorted regions. In the case of ideal crystals, the solution for the wave fields with arbitrary incident beam distribution is given for crystals of arbitrary thickness. For distorted crystals, the integral equations give the universal method of treatment of both weakly and strongly distorted regions. The problem of image determination from strongly distorted regions is reduced to the solution of a simple one-dimensional integral equation. The first iteration approximation of initial integral equations is shown to give results similar to those of a Fourier analysis method with the defect being treated as a small perturbation.

Notes: The strong enhancement of the anomalous transmission (Borrmann) effect in the symmetrical cases of simultaneous diffraction of three, four and six waves is considered. The analytical solution of the diffraction problem has been obtained when the Bragg conditions are satisfied exactly. The effect of the suppression of photoelectric absorption is investigated with consideration of both dipole and quadrupole interactions.

Notes: The general theory of X-ray spherical-wave diffraction in two, either identical or different in nature, spatially separated perfect crystals is developed. The theory takes into account the phase shift of the waves both inside the crystals and in vacuum before, between and after the crystals. The nonmonochromaticity of radiation, the source dimension and the placing of a slit before the first crystal are considered. The results of theoretical calculation and an experimental study of the interference fringes and focusing the radiation are presented. A good agreement between the experimental and theoretical data is obtained for values of the experimental parameters that affect focusing.

Notes: The applications of the external photoeffect excited by an X-ray standing wave to structure studies of crystal subsurface layers are discussed. In experiments conducted with an epitaxial Si film doped with B and Ge, with Ge concentrations ranging from 3.7 × 1019 to 1.5 × 1020 atoms cm-3, a change of phase of the scattering amplitude on the photoemission curve is found. This change is caused by the total surface displacement due to a change in the interplanar spacing in the disturbed layer. The experimental results are compared with accurate theoretical calculations in a bicrystal model. Values for the phase φ (0) and degree of amorphization exp [W(0)] on the surface are obtained by least-squares fitting. Universal analytical formulae for the computation of functions describing electron transport and the escape depth of electrons in a crystal are suggested. The potentialities of the depth-selective analysis of X-ray standing waves are analysed. The theoretical foundations of the secondary-radiation yield under the conditions of multiple diffraction are developed. A direct observation of an enhanced Borrmann effect in Laue multi-wave diffraction is predicted.
