Notes: The flat-specimen effect on the peak profile in powder diffractometry with Bragg–Brentano geometry can quantitatively be treated as a convolution with an asymmetric window function. The formula of the window function and a practical method for numerical calculation of the convolution are proposed. By applying the model function given by the convolution of the pseudo-Voigt function with asymmetric window functions based on vertical (axial) divergence and the flat-specimen effect, experimental profiles measured with a conventional diffractometer are fairly well reproduced with only a few parameters. When this function is applied to the analysis of experimental diffraction profiles of a lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) standard sample measured with a conventional powder X-ray diffractometer, the lattice constant is estimated as a = 4.15685 (2)–4.15693 (2) Å at 299 (1) K, without the use of any other standard material or preceding correction of systematic instrumental errors, while the specified value is a = 4.15695 (6) Å.

Notes: The effect of transparency and finite thickness of the sample on the peak profile in powder diffractometry with Bragg–Brentano geometry is treated as a convolution with an asymmetric aberration function. The formula of the aberration function and a practical method for numerical calculation of the convolution are proposed. The model function for the total profile is given by triple convolution of the pseudo-Voigt function with asymmetric functions based on vertical (axial) divergence, horizontal (equatorial) divergence and sample transparency. The validity of the model profile function is examined by fitting the Cu Kα X-ray diffraction profile of diluted lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) standard samples (SRM660) of 0.5 mm thickness, the transparency of which is varied by mixing with different amounts of starch; all the parameters that may affect the shape of the profile function are treated as fixed parameters. Even in the case of heavily distorted profiles of highly transparent samples with the inverse linear absorption coefficients μ−1 = 0.34 and 1.19 mm, experimental profiles are fairly well reproduced by the model function, typically within several % in R factor. It is also demonstrated that the lattice constants of the transparent samples are precisely evaluated by applying this model function.

Notes: A sensitive and rapid method to analyse fuel components in blood from rats exposed to kerosene or light oil vapour was developed by making use of capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The aliphatic hydrocarbons with carbon numbers 8-10 and aromatics such as toluene, xylene, 3- and 4-ethyltoluene and trimethylbenzenes were clearly detected in blood from rats exposed to kerosene or light oil vapour, using the head-space method combined with the salting-out technique. The concentration ratio of pseudocumene to toluene in blood exposed to light oil was higher than that in the case of exposure to kerosene. The lower limits of detection were 50 pg and 1 ng in toluene and pseudocumene, respectively. Our suggestion is that this method is useful in forensic investigations to detect fuel components in blood and for the purposes of differentiating kerosene and light oil in blood tissues.

Notes: For the rapid identification of additives such as antioxidant, ultraviolet absorber, and slipping agent, polypropylene containing such additives was heated in a tube connected directly to the inlet system of a mass spectrometer. The vapor of the additives evaporating out of the polypropylene was led to the reservoir and then submitted to mass spectrometry to give spectra for identification.

Notes: Gel permeation chromatography, using polystyrene gel and tetrahydrofuran as solvent, has been applied to hydroxybenzophenones, esters of salicylic acid, alkylphenols, alkylated methylenediphenols, and phenol-formaldehyde condensation products. The difference between the calculated molecular volume of these phenolic compounds and that obtained by actual determination with GPC has been ascribed to tetrahydrofuran solvation of the phenolic hydroxyl group. Furthermore, it has become clear that THF solvation is affected by the steric hindrance of ortho-substituted phenol and by inactivation of the phenolic hydroxyl group resulting from internal hydrogen bonding.

Notes: Glow discharge polymerization in the CF2Cl2/CH4, CHF2Cl, and CHFCl2 systems was performed. The materials formed are not polymers but oligomers; they contain considerable chlorine and fluorine and their surface energies are not so low as those of the polymers from the CF4/CH4 mixture. These materials dissolved in organic solvents and their molecular weights were measured. In glow discharge polymerization of methylmethacrylate the addition of CHFCl2 caused formed polymers to be soluble in organic solvents. This polymerization is discussed.
