Notes: Abstract A new formulation for the numerical solution of low Mach number compressible flow problems is presented and analyzed. In this formulation the thermal part (energy and species equations) is solved implicitly and decoupled from the momentum equation, whereas the hydrodynamic part (momentum-continuity) is advanced in time using a high order splitting approach which results in overall high order accuracy in time and minimal errors in mass conservation. These errors are analyzed using both analytical tools and benchmark numerical examples. Results from two-dimensional simulations with one-step global reaction in opposed jet flame and porous particle configurations are also presented.

Notes: Abstract. The polymers 3 having pyridine moieties in the main chain were synthesized by the reaction of the organocobalt polymers 1 having cobaltacyclopentadiene moieties in the main chain with various nitriles 2. When brown colored 1 and excess 2 were heated in tetrahydrofuran at 80 °C for 24 h and then at 150 °C for 12 h in a sealed tube, the polymers 3 were obtained by the precipitation with methanol in good yields. From the spectroscopic measurements, the resulting polymers 3 were found to contain 35 – 90% of the pyridine moieties depending on the structures of 1.

Notes: Abstract In the vole, Microtus agrestis, the constitutive heterochromatin is largely restricted to the giant sex chromosomes but varies in its degree of condensation in various cell types. In the cleavage embryos and fibroblasts it formed one or two long and extended heterochromatic fibers, in hepatocytes it formed two large and diffuse masses and in neurons, spermatogonia and oogonia it formed two large and compact masses. The basic patterns of all differentiated cells were essentially unchanged throughout development.—At all stages of development and in cells of all types, mitotic nuclei displayed two large heteropycnotic chromosomes in prophase and persistent condensation in telophase. Apposition and delayed separation of chromatids of the giant chromosomes was also observed in metaphase and anaphase, respectively. During the first meiotic prophase of spermatocytes and oocytes, the giant chromosomes were also heteropycnotic.—The results strongly suggest that constitutive heterochromatin is localized in the same chromosomes throughout development and represents a specific entity.

Notes: Abstract In the field vole, Microtus agrestis, most of the constitutive heterochromatin is localized in the giant chromosomes. A detailed examination of a large number of adult cell types reveals that this chromatin is actually present as a heterochromatic fiber in all interphase nuclei. Depending upon the cell types, however, the fiber shows varying degrees of condensation and folding ranging from a very long and extended fiber to a large compact chromocenter. The number of cell types with giant chromocenters was less commonly observed than those with extended fibers. This explains why some cells were previously thought to be devoid of heterochromatin.—The results of this investigation strongly indicate that constitutive heterochromatin represents a unique nuclear entity.

Notes: Summary In a habitat judged to be energetically costly for thermoregulation, mean body temperatures (MBT's) ofAnolis sagrei are significantly higher than those ofA. distichus. As indexed by the slope of the regression of body temperatures (T b ) on substrate temperature (T s ),A. sagrei is more dependent upon environmental temperatures thanA. distichus. In a habitat judged to be less costly for thermoregulation and where interspecific competition for perch sites may be less, MBT's ofA. sagrei are significantly higher, proportionally more lizards occupy sunny perches, and the slope of the regression of T b on T s is significantly less, than for conspecifics in the costly habitat. As indexed by length-specific fat body weights, well-nourished lizards in the costly habitat have T b 's which are independent of environmental temperature; T b 's of poorly-nourished lizards are highly dependent upon environmental temperature. This relationship does not hold for lizards in the low-cost habitat. These results corroborate the hypothesis that energetic costs are important in controlling the extent to which lizards thermoregulate. In high-cost habitats lizards thermoregulate less precisely than in low-cost habitats. Lizards that exploit the habitat as if it were highly productive thermoregulate more precisely than lizards that exploit the environment as if it were of low productivity.

Notes: Summary The breakup of high viscosity threads was analyzed by the application of the equations of motion and continuity. The analysis is based on the assumption that the thread breakup results from small disturbances developing along the thread. The present study has only qualitative value, quantitative analysis requires the application of equations of continuity, motion and energy. However, the analysis clearly demonstrates changes in the stability of the thread resulting from the mechanical properties of the liquid as well as the extension rate and the dimensions of the thread subjected to the spinning process. The thread breakup can be characterized qualitatively by the time which elapses from the application of the disturbance on the thread until its breakup. This is the “breakup time”. Elastic properties of the molten polymer increase the breakup time of the thread. An increase in the extension rate of the thread reduces the breakup time.
