    Description: The tensile performance of glass/natural jute fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) bar, intended for concrete reinforcement was evaluated as a function of volume fraction of natural jute fibre. Natural jute fibre, mixed at a ratio of 7:3 with vinyl ester, was surface-treated with a silane coupling agent and used to replaced glass fibre in the composite in volume fractions of 0%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100%. The tensile load-displacement curve showed nearly linear elastic behaviour up to 50% natural jute fibre, but was partially nonlinear at a proportion of 70%. However, the glass/natural jute FRP bars prepared using 100% natural jute fibre showed linear elastic behaviour. Tensile strength decreased as the natural jute fibre volume fraction increased because the tensile strength of natural jute fibre is much lower than that of glass fibre (about 1:8.65).     Description: For a control rod element of the Very High Temperature Reactor, a carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix composite (C/C composite) is one of the major candidate materials for its high strength and thermal stability. In this study, in order to establish the data base of the 2D-C/C composite, the fracture data was obtained by simulating the crack expected to be generated under the VHTR condition and the oxidation effect on the fracture behavior was evaluated. Moreover, the fracture mechanism of the C/C composite was investigated through scanning electron microscope observation. This study showed that the oxidized matrix caused reduction of the fracture toughness and the reduction ratio was dependent on the density of matrix and a number cracks. With increasing the oxidation, the fracture toughness is mainly dependent on the fiber characteristics.     Description: A feasibility work on the application of magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) to automotive components, such as engine mounts is presented. While vehicle components require the high resonance frequency in terms of ride quality and handling, it is required to have the low resonance frequency to isolate the incoming vibration. With the conventional automotive technologies, it is challenging to combine these two conflicting performance trade-offs, ride quality including handling, and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).     Description: Centimeter scale AlN sheet has been successfully synthesized by the direct nitridation method with an Al-NH 3 –N 2 –H 2 system. The starting material is Al sheet with 16-300 micron thickness. Al sheet was gradually transformed into AlN sheet in a tube furnace with NH 3 –N 2 –H 2 atmosphere at 900–1200°C. Synthesized a large scale AlN sheet has highly crystalline. The size of the AlN sheet with 30×100×0.0016mm has only AlN crystal phase. In microstructure analysis, there are fine AlN particles in an AlN sheet. AlN particle size decreased from 250 to 100 nm with decreasing reaction temperature in the tube furnace. Large scale AlN sheet synthesized at high reaction temperatures have low oxygen contents.

    Description: The pore generation technology using PAHM (Poly-acrylonitrile Hollow Microsphere) was studied in order to reduce the weights of tableware. In this study, we verify the property of modified slurry and plasticity of green body by adding PAHM. The modified slurry was prepared by adding 25~55vol% of PAHM to the slurry for whiteware. The viscosity of slurry was controlled to be low value (25~45vol%). However, the viscosity of modified slurry increased and the plasticity of modified green body decreased inside the 45~55vol% range. The formed specimen by slip casting was fired at 1225 °C, 1240°C. As the amount of PAHM content increased, the weight decreased and the addition of 45vol/% of PAHM resulted in a weight drop of 39%. However, when the PAHM content increased, the strength decreases over 50%. This is caused by the presence of a large volume of surface defects (pores) and defects from the agglomeration of PAHM.

    Description: We provide a versatile upper bound on the number of maximally entangled qubits, or private bits, shared by two parties via a generic adaptive communication protocol over a quantum network when the use of classical communication is not restricted. Although our result follows the idea of Azuma et al (2016 Nat. Commun. 7 13523) of splitting the network into two parts, our approach relaxes their strong restriction, consisting of the use of a single entanglement measure in the quantification of the maximum amount of entanglement generated by the channels. In particular, in our bound the measure can be chosen on a channel-by-channel basis, in order to make it as tight as possible. This enables us to apply the relative entropy of entanglement, which often gives a state-of-the-art upper bound, on every Choi-simulable channel in the network, even when the other channels do not satisfy this property.
