Description: Fractal geometry has gained attention in recent years and represents a problem of high interest for the characterization of surface topography. In this study it was analyzed the surface micro-topography for a rolled thick sheet anisotropic metallic material of type 2000 series aluminium alloy (AA2024-T351). In order to analyze and to characterize the corresponding anisotropic surfaces, profile of particular samples were recorded with a specialized apparatus Mitutoyo SJ-301 (Japan). The random nature of the roughness height is described through statistical analysis. The irregularity of the surface profile has been measured using a lot of conventional surface roughness parameters such as: arithmetic average, mean square root, maximum height of the profile, etc. Fractal analysis provides a useful way to characterize the observed spatial complexity of surface micro-topography. For this study it was used the structural function method to calculate two specific fractal parameters: D (...

Description: The tribological properties of the friction couple materials have a major influence on the brake system operation and its failure. One of the main phenomena associated as a symptom of failure in the brake system are the noises and vibrations produced during braking. The stick-slip phenomenon is attributed as the cause of these noises and vibrations. The stick-slip phenomenon usually appears at low and very low sliding speeds and is described as intermittences in the friction process caused by the differences between the values of the kinetic and the static friction coefficients. The present paper addresses an investigation about the influence of the static and kinetic friction on the occurrence of above mentioned noises and vibrations in the disc brake system. For this, extensive experimental work was performed on a laboratory tribometer in the form of pin-on-disc tests, where the pin was manufactured out of an automotive brake pad and the disc was manufactured out of an automot...

Description: Co is considered to be one of the main ingredients in superalloys. Co is considered a critical element and its substitution is difficult due to its unique ability to form high temperature stable structures with high mechanical and corrosion/oxidation resistance. High entropy alloys (HEA) represent a relatively new concept in material design. HEA are characterised by a high number of alloying elements, in unusually high proportion. Due to their specific particularities, high entropy alloys tend to form predominant solid solution structures that develop potentially high chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Present paper is studying Co-less high entropy alloys with high potential in severe environment applications. The high entropy alloys based on Al-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni system were prepared by induction melting and casting under protective atmosphere. The as-cast specimens were heat treated at various temperatures to determine the structure and property behaviour. Samples taken be...

Description: Electrometry is most frequently applied geophysical method to examine dynamical phenomena related to the massive salt presence due to resistivity contrasts between salt, salt breccia and geological covering formations. On the vertical resistivity sections obtained with VES devices these three compartments are clearly differentiates by high resistivity for the massive salt, very low for salt breccia and variable for geological covering formations. When the land surface is inclined, shallow formations are moving gravitationally on the salt back, producing a landslide. Landslide monitoring involves repeated periodically measurements of geoelectrical profiles into a grid covering the slippery surface, in the same conditions (climate, electrodes position, instrument and measurement parameters). The purpose of monitoring landslides in Slanic Prahova area, was to detect the changes in resistivity distribution profiles to superior part of subsoil measured in 2014 and 2015. Measurement g...

Description: In introduction are presented solutions of planetary mechanisms that can be used in the construction of the hybrid automobiles where the thermal and electrical sources must be coupled. The systems have in their composition a planetary mechanism with two degrees of mobility at which are coupled a thermal engine, two revertible electrical machines, a gear transmission with four gears and a differential mechanism which transmits the motion at the driving wheels. For the study of the dynamical behavior, with numerical results, one designs such mechanisms, models the elements with solids in AutoCAD, and obtains the mechanical properties of the elements. Further on, we present and solve the equations of motion of a hybrid automotive for which one knows the dynamical parameters.

Description: In order to construct a road bed foundation, if land has moved, on an area with old landslides, there is a high chance of it moving again. The investigation was made in a region with hilly relief, in which the parent materials of soils are argillaceous marls of Pliocene age. Because the slope is scarped and the versant has been cut, the soil mass slide favoured of the particle-size distribution dominated by heavy clay. With a reiteratedly percolative moisture regime, the soil material is saturated in water fora long period (700-800 mm precipitation/year), and that can increase the slope mass, thereby increasing the driving forces. In a soil profile situated on the top of the hill, with landslide for about 40 m length of the road, disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were analysed physic-chemical and mineralogical. For the heavy and light minerals from the sand fraction a polarized light analyser is used, and for clay minerals X-ray, differential thermal and infrared absorption...

Description: This article shows part of the results of a complex research on the behaviour of steel beam-to-column end-plate connections under the fire action. In the paper, a parallel between a computation made with the help of a computer model, based on the prescriptions of the European design code EN 1993 and experimental tests conducted on real scale substructures is presented. The main goal of this work is to find the difference, in terms of strength and mode of failure, between the European design code and the experimental situation in the testing facility.

Description: During seismic motions, the steel connections are parts of structure that may have permanent damage, changing their strength and stiffness. For this reason, during a post seismic fire, they will work in a different manner, having a different fire resistance. With the help of tests, we want to find the effect of the seismic damage on the fire behavior of the structure. Fire and post-earthquake fire tests were done, together with room temperature tests, for comparison and scale. The main goal was to find the effect of the deterioration due to cyclic action, on the fire behavior of specimens. During earthquake, steel connections may develop a deterioration of strength and stiffness that will lead to a different behavior under fire. In this paper, parallels between different tests are presented. The conclusions are in terms of maximum reached forces and modes of failure in the case of prior deteriorated or new connections subjected to fire.

Description: A wear test of the twist movement was performed as a new method to estimate the in vivo wear behavior of an acetabular cup material for total knee replacements. A series of UHMWPE samples was used to evaluate the dynamic coefficient of friction in twist movement in contact with steel. The experimental data were conducted to validate the related theoretical model developed in the present study.
