Description: A transportation system for small object or fluid without contact is investigated being based on ultrasonic levitation. Small objects are suspended against gravity at the nodal points in ultrasonic pressure field due to the sound radiation force generated as the gradient of the energy density of the field. In this study, the trapped object is transported in the horizontal plane by introducing the spatial shift of the standing waves by the switching the lateral modes or travelling waves. The goal of the study is to establish a technology which can provide a total system with the flexibility in composing various transportation paths. Methods for linear/rotary stepping motions and continuous linear transportation are explained in this report. All the transportation tracks are composed of a bending vibrator and a reflector. The design for these acoustic cavity/waveguide is discussed.

Description: Varifocal imaging using an optical lens that employs acoustic radiation force and a viscoelastic material and that has no mechanical moving parts is investigated. The lens has a simple and thin structure that consists of an annular ultrasonic transducer and silicone gel. An axially symmetric acoustic standing wave can be generated in the gel by exciting a vibration mode in the radial direction on the transducer. The lens profile can be altered by varying the acoustic radiation force of the transducer. The focal length can be controlled by varying the transducer input voltage so that the lens functions as a variable-focus lens.

Description: For the efficient maintenance of a large number of fishing port facilities distributed over various locations, establishment of simple deterioration diagnosis method with acceptable precision is needed. In this study, the applicability of the rebound method and the mechanical impedance method to the existing fishing port facilities was examined with laboratory tests focusing on the effect of testing conditions, measurement positions, aggregate contents on compressive strength, and influence of polishing of the test surfaces followed by in-situ surveys. As a result, the mechanical impedance method showed an acceptable precision as compared with the rebound method and was able to easily estimate compressive strength without polishing the test surfaces. It was very likely that the mechanical impedance method could be highly applicable to deterioration diagnosis method for the existing fishing port facilities.

Description: The purpose of this study is to compare the diversity and abundance of flower-visiting bees in squash ( Cucurbita maxima ) and tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ) flowers between three small valleys surrounded by forest and three open grasslands outside forest. Both type habitats intermingled as mosaic of satoyama, which is a socio-ecological production landscape managed by agriculture and forestry located in rural Japan. Both squash and tomato were planted separately in different pots, where each set were placed at particular site. Number of flowers and fruits were recorded and the flowers-visiting bees were collected using sweep net from June to August 2013. A total 96 individuals from 9 species (2 families) of bees were collected from squash and tomato. The number of bees visited squash (91 individuals and 9 species) outnumbered those visited tomato (5 individuals and 2 species). Tomato flowers in the open grasslands were only visited by Ceratina . Meanwhile, B...

Description: Multivariate analysis is applied to investigate geochemistry of several trace elements in top soils and their relation with the contamination source as the influence of coal mines in Jorong, South Kalimantan. Total concentration of Cd, V, Co, Ni, Cr, Zn, As, Pb, Sb, Cu and Ba was determined in 20 soil samples by the bulk analysis. Pearson correlation is applied to specify the linear correlation among the elements. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA) were applied to observe the classification of trace elements and contamination sources. The results suggest that contamination loading is contributed by Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, As, and Pb. The elemental loading mostly affects the non-coal mining area, for instances the area near settlement and agricultural land use. Moreover, the contamination source is classified into the areas that are influenced by the coal mining activity, the agricultural types, and the river mixing zone. Multivariate analysis could elucidate th...
