Description: SUMMARY A massive debris flow induced by Typhoon Morakot buried the southern Taiwan village of Siaolin in Jiaxian township and caused the deaths of an estimated 474 people. To reconstruct the mechanisms triggering the tragic debris flow, researchers must identify the subsurface structures of the debris-flow sediments. For this purpose, we conducted 2-D, electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) surveys along networked lines where the village once stood. With the imaging results, we identified three layers, including the basement of Yenshuikeng Shale, the newly accumulated debris-flow deposits; and the old fluvial deposits amid the basement and the debris-flow sediments. According to the resistivity results, the bottom of the debris-flow deposits is under the old ground surface in three eroded areas, C1, C2 and C3. Resistivity anomalies in the debris-flow sediment layer are well correlated with the locations of houses and the major roads in the piling area (P1) and the eroded area (C2). Hence these findings indicate that the basal erosion of the debris flow may have occurred in areas C1, C2 and C3 since a specific mass movement may undercut into the basal sediments or rocks and forms a filled trench in its basement. These eroded areas may be related to different events of mass movements due to their different orientations of basal erosion. From the resistivity image we estimated the volume of debris flow is underestimated for about 24.5 per cent to the estimated volume of the debris flow from digital terrain models (DTMs) in the study area. We conclude that the volume of a debris flow may be underestimated because of the basal erosion if only data from DTMs are used for its calculations and present new means for its correction by combining DTM and ERI results.

Description: Sea surface salinity (SSS) is a fundamental parameter for the study of global ocean dynamics, water cycle, and climate variability. Aquarius launched by NASA and the Space Agency of Argentina is a breakthrough which could achieve the remote sensing data of SSS. The present paper takes the coastal of China as study area, which is a representative area of ocean boundary and influenced by continental rivers (Yangtze River and Pearl River). After analyze the temporal and spatial variation of SSS in the coastal of China, the estuary area has obvious low salinity because the injected of freshwater from continent. Take the East China Sea (ECS) and South China Sea (SCS) as representative region to discuss the effect of freshwater to SSS. The salinity is almost equal in winter when the diluted water is inadequate in both rivers. However, an obvious decrease appeared in summer especial July in Yangtze River for abundance discharge inflow the ECS. This is a reasonable expression of Yangtze...

Description: Since the 1970s, acid rain has remained in the public spotlight in both Europe and the United States and recently has emerged as an important problem in other regions such as Southeast Asia. To reveal responses of Masson Pine to acid rain during a long time series in central China, we used the interpolation dataset of acid rain and the Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data to derive the monthly pH and NDVI trajectories based on acidity gradients from 1992 to 2006. Then we analyzed inter-annual and seasonal variation of vegetation growth by improved sinusoidal fitting and regression analysis. In the environment of strong acidity and moderate acidity, the growth of Masson Pine was inhibited during the study period, while the slight acidity promoted growth of Masson Pine to some extent. For the multi-year monthly changing trend of NDVI, late spring to mid autumn, the NDVI showed a decreasing trend, especially in Jun...

Description: In order to understand the influence of anthropogenic aerosols on radiation in the urban boundary layer, we measured atmospheric aerosol mass concentrations (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ), integrated solar radiation, wind and temperature at different layers of a 325-m iron tower. A typical heavy haze process occurring during the period of October 2004 was analyzed. It is observed that the inversion layer and the weak wind was the most important factor causing the accumulation of pollutants. The results show that the PM 10 concentrations under polluted day conditions is about 84 times (537.1μgm −3 ) higher than those on clear weather conditions (6.4μgm −3 ). The difference in the solar radiation between 2m and 280m became smaller (93.07 Wm −2 to 16.07 Wm −2 ) when pollution turned heavy, while the attenuations rate changed large (16.76% to 20.96%)

Description: In order to locate the specific positions of frame destruction and find reasons of them, it is a feasible to analyze static strength, vibration mode and transient state by ANSYS solid modeling with the basis of design drawing for the single type of anode trailer. The analysis result shows the position of the maximum stress of the frame is at the front end of the lifting frame in the transient analysis, the tearing damage of the front end of the anode trailer frame is caused by the U-shaped frame with carbon block hit the lifting frame when the anode trailer is in reverse loading. In practice, we should avoid excessive impact force when reversing.

Description: Based on Hastelloy C-276 sheet materials, the microstructure, element segregation and mechanical properties of weld joints were studied using pulse laser welding technology. It is noted that there are three morphological grains in the weld zone, which is columnar dendrites, cellular crystals and equiaxed grains, respectively. Compared with the base metal, the microstructure of the weld zone is obviously refined. Element segregation exists in the weld zone where no secondary phases formed. In addition, the microhardness of the weld joints is greater than that of the base metal by 12%. Its yield strength is equivalent to the yield strength of the base metal, and the tensile strength is 93% of that of the base metal. There are plenty of dimples in the fracture of the weld joints and the base metal, and the fracture modes of both are all ductile fracture.

Description: The object of this work was to improve fireman’s fighting efficiency for winter rescue. Firstly, relative standard and background of fire protective clothing for rescue was reviewed. Secondly, different types of clothing were studied according to different structure. Thirdly, fire protective clothing with anti-icing performance and thermal retention performance for rescue was designed. Further study should focus on the new clothing’s actual application in northern east fire brigade.

Description: The various elements that are affecting the Earth’s climate have brought climate change to the top of the priority list amongst scientists and policy-makers. Expected changes to local climatic conditions impact directly on the surrounding environment and potentially lead to changes in the degradation processes of building materials, affecting the durability and service life of infrastructures. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of future climate projections on concrete structures in Malta, in particular on carbonation-induced corrosion resulting from increasing temperatures and CO2 concentrations. Thirteen reinforced concrete structures in Malta were chosen for a retrospective analysis in order to validate two carbonation depth prediction models. The validated prediction models were subsequently used to evaluate the varying climate change scenarios in order to determine the effects on concrete carbonation depth for several concrete grades. The age of the structu...

Description: Two binary and ternary complexes of Terbium with N-HPA and Bipy (N-HPA: N-phenylanthranilic acid, Bipy: 2,2′-bipyridine ) were synthesized, and its structure was characterised by elemental analysis, UV and IR spectra. The effect of the second ligand on the fluorescence propertyof the complex was studied. The result proved that the fluorescence intensity of the binary terbium N-HPA complex was rather weak, but the addition of the second ligand Bipy could effectively increase luminescence intensity of terbium ions. The ternary complex of Tb(NPA) 3 (Bipy) (NPA: radical of N-HPA by removal of one H atom) has good fluorescence property. Tb(NPA) 3 (Bipy) 2 is a promising fluorescent material, which widely used in optoelectronics engineering and technology.
