    Description: A mathematical model is described to investigate the damping moment of weakly nonlinear roll and yaw motions of a floating body in time domain under the action of sinusoidal waves. The mathematical formulation for added mass moment of inertia and damping is presented by approximating time-dependent coefficients and forcing moments when small distortion holds. Using perturbation technique, we obtain orderwise equations wherein the closed-form solution is obtained for zeroth-order case, and for higher-order cases we resort to numerical integration using Runge-Kutta method with adaptive step-size algorithm. In order to analyze the model result, we perform numerical experiment for a vessel of 19190 tons under the beam wave of 1 m height and frequency 0.74 rad/s. Closer inspection in damping analysis reveals that viscous effect becomes significant for roll damping; whereas for yaw damping, contribution from added mass variation becomes significant.

    Description: This paper investigates the motion response of a floating body in time domain under the influence of small amplitude regular waves. The governing equations of motion describing the balance of wave-exciting force with the inertial, damping, and restoring forces are transformed into frequency domain by applying Laplace transform technique. Assuming the floating body is initially at rest and the waves act perpendicular to the vessel of lateral symmetry, hydrodynamic coefficients were obtained in terms of integrated sectional added-mass, damping, and restoring coefficients, derived from Frank's close-fit curve. A numerical experiment on a vessel of19190ton displaced mass was carried out for three different wave frequencies, namely,0.56rad/s,0.74rad/s, and1.24rad/s. The damping parameters (ςi) reveal the system stability criteria, derived from the quartic analysis, corresponding to the undamped frequencies (βi). It is observed that the sway and yaw motions become maximum for frequency0.56rad/s, whereas roll motion is maximum for frequency0.74rad/s. All three motions show harmonic behavior and attain dynamic equilibrium for timet〉100seconds. The mathematical approach presented here will be useful to determine seaworthiness characteristics of any vessel when wave amplitudes are small and also to validate complex numerical models.

    Description: Reduction of [PtCl6]2− by L-ascorbic acid (H2ASc) in 0.1 M aqueous acid medium has been investigated spectrophotometrically under pseudo-first order condition at [PtCl6]2− = 0.005–0.007 mol dm−3, 0.05 ≤ [H2ASc]/mol dm−3 ≤ 0.3, 298 K ≤ T ≤ 308 K, [H+] = 0.14 mol dm−3, I=0.5 mol dm−3. The redox reaction follows the rate law: d[Pt(IV)]/dt = k[H2ASc][Pt(IV)], where k is the second-order rate constant and [H2ASc] is the total concentration of ascorbic acid. Electron transfer from [H2ASc] to Pt(IV) center leading to the release of two halide ions and formation of the reaction products, square planner Pt(II) halide complex, and dehydrated ascorbic acid is suggested. This redox reaction follows an outersphere mechanism as Pt(IV) complex is substituted inert. Activation parameters were calculated corresponding to rate of electron transfer reaction k. Activation parameters favor the electron transfer reaction.

    Description: The plane strain problem of determining strain energy release rate, crack energy, and crack-opening displacement (COD) for a moving Griffith crack at the interface of two dissimilar orthotropic half-planes is considered. The problem is reduced to a pair of singular integral equations of second kind which have finally been solved by using Jacobi polynomials. Graphical plots of the strain energy release rate, crack energy, and crack-opening displacement for the problem in different particular cases are presented.

    Description: Fetus in Fetu (FIF) is a rare condition where a monozygotic diamnionic parasitic twin is incorporated into the body of its fellow twin and grows inside it. FIF is differentiated from teratoma by the presence of vertebral column. An eight year old girl presented with an abdominal swelling which by X-ray, ultrasonography and CT scan revealed a fetiform mass containing long bones and vertebral bodies surrounded by soft tissue situated on right lumber region. On laparotomy, a retroperitoneal mass resembling a fetus of 585 gm was removed. It had a trunk and four limbs with fingers and toes, umbilical stump, intestinal loops and abundant scalp hairs but was devoid of brain and heart. Histology showed various well-differentiated tissues in respective sites. FIF is a mystery in reproduction and it is scarce in literature in such well-developed stage.

    Description: Integral transform technique is employed to solve the elastodynamic problem of steady-state propagation of a Griffith crack centrally situated along the midplane of orthotropic strip of finite thickness2hand subjected to point loading with centrally situated moving punches under constant pressure along the boundaries of the layer. The problem is reduced to the solution of a pair of simultaneous singular integral equations with Cauchy-type singularities which have finally been solved through the finite Hilbert transform technique. For largeh, analytical expression for the stress intensity factor at the crack tip is obtained. Graphical plots of the numerical results are also presented.

    Description: Pseudorandom testing has been widely used in built-in self-testing of VLSI circuits. Although the defect level estimation for pseudorandom testing has been performed using sequential statical analysis, no closed form can be accomplished as complex combinatorial enumerations are involved. In this work, a Markov model is employed to describe the pseudorandom test behaviors. For the first time, a closed form of the defect level equation is derived by solving the differential equation extracted from the Markov model. The defect level equation clearly describes the relationships among defect level, fabrication yield, the number of all input combinations, circuit detectability (in terms of the worst single stuck-at fault), and pseudorandom test length. The Markov model is then extended to consider all single stuck-at faults, instead of only the worst single stuck-at fault. Results demonstrate that the defect level analysis for pseudorandom testing by only dealing with the worst single stuck-at fault is not adequate (In fact, the worst single stuck-at fault analysis is just a special case). A closed form of the defect level equation is successfully derived to incorporate all single stuck-at faults into consideration. Although our discussions are primarily based on the single struck-at fault model, it is not difficult to extend the results to other fault types.

    Description: A polymeric thin film modified electrode, that is, poly(niacinamide) modified carbon paste electrode (MCPE), was developed for the electrochemical determination of catechol (CC) by using cyclic voltammetric technique. Compared to bare carbon paste electrode (BCPE), the poly(niacinamide) MCPE shows good electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of catechol in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) of physiological pH 7.4. All experimental parameters were optimized. Poly(niacinamide) modified carbon paste electrode gave a linear response between concentration of CC and its anodic peak current in the range within 20.6–229.0 μM. The limit of detection (3S/M) and limit of quantification (10S/M) were 1.497 μM and 4.99 μM, respectively. From the study of scan rate variation, the electrode process was found to be adsorption-controlled. The involvement of protons and electrons in the oxidation of CC was found to be equal. The probable electropolymerisation mechanism of niacinamide was proposed. Finally, this method can be used in development of a sensor for sensitive determination of CC.
