    Description: Small fluctuations caused by random changes of loads exist continuously in power grids, which are called ambient signals. Using time-synchronized phasor measurements, the closed-loop identification of power system based on ambient data is discussed, which can reflect accurate operating conditions currently and provide critical information for system analyzing and controller designing. The closed-loop identification of a power system with multiple disturbances is theoretically studied, including the closed-loop identifiability, the consistency properties, and the convergence properties. The requirements for realizing the closed-loop identification are summarized, and the theoretical research results are validated by simulation examples.

    Description: Proposed in this paper is the development of a photovoltaic module simulator, one capable of running an output characteristic simulation under normal operation according to various electrical parameters specified and exhibiting multiple advantages of being low cost, small sized, and easy to implement. In comparison with commercial simulation tools, Pspice and Solar Pro, the simulator developed demonstrates a comparable I-V as well as a P-V output characteristic curve. In addition, a series-parallel configuration of individual modules constitutes a photovoltaic module array, which turns into a photovoltaic power generation system with an integrated power conditioner.

    Description: Scheduling involving jobs with time-dependent processing times has recently attracted much research attention. However, multiagent scheduling with simultaneous considerations of jobs with time-dependent processing times and ready times is relatively unexplored. Inspired by this observation, we study a two-agent single-machine scheduling problem in which the jobs have both time-dependent processing times and ready times. We consider the model in which the actual processing time of a job of the first agent is a decreasing function of its scheduled position while the actual processing time of a job of the second agent is an increasing function of its scheduled position. In addition, each job has a different ready time. The objective is to minimize the total completion time of the jobs of the first agent with the restriction that no tardy job is allowed for the second agent. We propose a branch-and-bound and several genetic algorithms to obtain optimal and near-optimal solutions for the problem, respectively. We also conduct extensive computational results to test the proposed algorithms and examine the impacts of different problem parameters on their performance.

    Description: The merge control models proposed for work zones are classified into two types (Hard Control Merge (HCM) model and Soft Control Merge (SCM) model) according to their own control intensity and are compared with a new model, called Individual Subjective Initiative Merge (ISIM) model, which is based on the linear lane-changing probability strategy in the merging area. The attention of this paper is paid to the positive impact of the individual subjective initiative for the whole traffic system. Three models (ISIM, HCM, and SCM) are established and compared with each other by two order parameters, that is, system output and average vehicle travel time. Finally, numerical results show that both ISIM and SCM perform better than HCM. Compared with SCM, the output of ISIM is 20 vehicles per hour higher under the symmetric input condition and is more stable under the asymmetric input condition. Meanwhile, the average travel time of ISIM is 2000 time steps less under the oversaturated input condition.

    Description: This study developed a fault diagnosis meter based on a ZigBee wireless sensor network (WSN) for photovoltaic power generation systems. First, the Solar Pro software was used to simulate the 9-series, 2-parallel photovoltaic module array formed with the Sharp NT-R5E3E photovoltaic module as well as record the power generation data of the photovoltaic module array at different levels of solar radiation, module temperature, and fault conditions. The derived data were used to establish the weights of the extension neural network (ENN). The fault diagnosis in the photovoltaic power generation system required extracting the system’s power generation data and real-time solar radiation and module temperatures; this study thus developed an acquisition circuit for measuring these characteristic values. This study implemented extension neural network theory using a PIC single chip microcontroller and incorporated the ZigBee wireless sensor network module to construct a portable fault diagnosis meter to assess the photovoltaic power generation system. The experimental results showed that the proposed portable fault diagnosis meter based on the extension neural network for the photovoltaic power generation system possessed a high level of accuracy in fault identification.

    Description: A grain-based rock model was developed and applied to study mechanical characteristics and failure micromechanics in thick-walled cylinder and wellbore stability tests. The rock is represented as an assembly of tetrahedral blocks with bonded contacts. Material heterogeneity is modeled by varying the tensile strength at the block contacts. This grain-based rock model differs from previous disk/sphere particle-based rock models in its ability to represent a zero (or very low) initial porosity condition, as well as highly interlocked irregular block shapes that provide resistance to movement even after contact breakage. As a result, this model can reach higher uniaxial compressive strength to tensile strength ratios and larger friction coefficients than the disk/sphere particle-based rock model. The model captured the rock fragmentation process near the wellbore due to buckling and spalling. Thin fragments of rock similar to onion skins were produced, as observed in laboratory breakout experiments. The results suggest that this approach may be well suited to study the rock disaggregation process and other geomechanical problems in the rock excavation.

    Description: The insulation of power equipment can be effectively assessed by analyzing the acoustic signals originated from partial discharges (PD). Fabry-Perot (F-P) sensors are capable of detecting PD acoustic signals. Although the frequency bandwidth of an F-P sensor is mainly referred to conventional piezoelectric transducer (PZT) sensor, it is still doubtful to identify a suitable bandwidth for fiber sensors in detection of PD signals. To achieve a suitable bandwidth for an F-P sensor, the frequency distribution of PD acoustic emission is investigated, and an extrinsic F-P sensor is designed to detect acoustic signals generated from PD. F-P sensors with different intrinsic frequencies are fabricated as possible design standards of bandwidth for acoustic detection. PD acoustic signals are detected by these F-P sensors and PZT sensors in the experimental system, in which four typical electrode models are employed. The measured results of frequency performance are analyzed in linear and semilogarithmic coordinates. The results show that F-P sensors can effectively detect PD acoustic emissions in both wideband and narrowband modes. Moreover, F-P sensors achieve a higher sensitivity in the narrowband mode. We propose that intrinsic frequency of the F-P sensor should be designed in the frequency range of 100–170 kHz to obtain maximum sensitivity.

    Description: Ant colony optimization (ACO) is often used to solve optimization problems, such as traveling salesman problem (TSP). When it is applied to TSP, its runtime is proportional to the squared size of problemNso as to look less efficient. The following statistical feature is observed during the authors’ long-term gene data analysis using ACO: when the data sizeNbecomes big, local clustering appears frequently. That is, some data cluster tightly in a small area and form a class, and the correlation between different classes is weak. And this feature makes the idea of divide and rule feasible for the estimate of solution of TSP. In this paper an improved ACO algorithm is presented, which firstly divided all data into local clusters and calculated small TSP routes and then assembled a big TSP route with them. Simulation shows that the presented method improves the running speed of ACO by 200 factors under the condition that data set holds feature of local clustering.

    Description: Background. Intelligence is much important for brain tumor patients after their operation, while the reports about surgical related intelligence deficits are not frequent. It is not only theoretically important but also meaningful for clinical practice.Methods. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale was employed to evaluate the intelligence of 103 patients with intracranial tumor and to compare the intelligence quotient (IQ), verbal IQ (VIQ), and performance IQ (PIQ) between the intracerebral and extracerebral subgroups.Results. Although preoperative intelligence deficits appeared in all subgroups, IQ, VIQ, and PIQ were not found to have any significant difference between the intracerebral and extracerebral subgroups, but with VIQ lower than PIQ in all the subgroups. An immediate postoperative follow-up demonstrated a decline of IQ and PIQ in the extracerebral subgroup, but an improvement of VIQ in the right intracerebral subgroup. Pituitary adenoma resection exerted no effect on intelligence. In addition, age, years of education, and tumor size were found to play important roles.Conclusions. Brain tumors will impair IQ, VIQ, and PIQ. The extracerebral tumor resection can deteriorate IQ and PIQ. However, right intracerebral tumor resection is beneficial to VIQ, and transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma resection performs no effect on intelligence.
