Notes: Meta- and para-diethyl-p,p-oxydiphenylene pyromellitamide (DOP), the model compounds of the meta and para PMDA/ODA polyamic ethyl ester, were synthesized and characterized by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. Investigation of the imidization in d6-DMSO solution using NMR and FTIR techniques has shown that both the half imide and imide were formed. Quantitative analysis of the curing rates and degrees of conversion of the isomers in dilute d6-DMSO solution as a function of time under isothermal conditions or as function of temperature at fixed time (1 h) indicated that the kinetics of the ring closure reaction of the meta and para isomers were the same within 10%. This suggests that intrinsic reactivity differences between the isomers do not have much effect on the imidization process and do not account for the differences in rate that have been observed for the meta and para polymers in the solid state. No interconversion between the two isomeric forms occurred below 180°C, as has been observed for polyamic acids and their model compounds. The degree of conversion strongly depended on the reaction temperature and increased quickly after 170°C. The rate constant of the second ring closure reaction was found to be approximately three to four times the rate constant of the first ring closure reaction. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: A novel ultrasonic spray pyrolysis for high-quality ZnO films based on zinc-ammonia solution was achieved in air. To investigate the structural and optical properties as well as the performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs), ZnO films at different substrate temperatures and thicknesses were prepared. The performance of poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) based PSC was found to be improved due to the ZnO films. The crystal structure and roughness of the ZnO films fabricated at different temperatures were found to affect the performance of PSCs. The optimized power conversion efficiency was found to be maximum for PSCs with ZnO films prepared at 200°C. The growth process of these ZnO films is very simple, cost-effective, and compatible for larger-scale PSC preparation. The precursor used for spray pyrolysis is environmentally friendly and helps to achieve ZnO film preparation at a relative low temperature.

Description: The existence of multiple periodic solutions of the following differential delay equation is established by applying variational approaches directly, where , and is a given constant. This means that we do not need to use Kaplan and Yorke's reduction technique to reduce the existence problem of the above equation to an existence problem for a related coupled system. Such a reduction method introduced first by Kaplan and Yorke in (1974) is often employed in previous papers to study the existence of periodic solutions for the above equation and its similar ones by variational approaches.

Description: We study the existence of oscillatory periodic solutions for two nonautonomous differential-difference equations which arise in a variety of applications with the following forms:ẋ(t)=-f(t,x(t-r))andẋ(t)=-f(t,x(t-s))-f(t,x(t-2s)), wheref∈C(R×R,R)is odd with respect tox,andr,s〉0are two given constants. By using a symplectic transformation constructed by Cheng (2010) and a result in Hamiltonian systems, the existence of oscillatory periodic solutions of the above-mentioned equations is established.

Description: The increasing popularity of store brands is resulting in greater cannibalization of national brands. Thus, national-brand manufacturers are trying their best to confront this trend. At the same time, however, many leading national-brand manufacturers have become involved in the store-brand production of their counterpart retailers. We construct a game-theory-based framework to model the strategic interaction between a leading national-brand manufacturer and a retailer. Besides the national brand, the retailer also has an option for its own store brand to compete with the national brand head to head. There are two choices for the store-brand production available to the retailer: a fringe manufacturer with low production efficiency or alternatively the national-brand manufacturer with high efficiency. It is shown that, under certain conditions, there is a win-win situation for both the store-brand retailer and the national-brand manufacturer with the latter supplying the store brand. More interestingly, it is found that the national-brand manufacturer supplying the store brand may lead to a higher likelihood of the store brand introduction. Our study offers an explanation for why more and more national-brand manufacturers supply store brands.

Description: An effective two-level self-organizing map (SOM) neural network for direction of arrival (DOA) of sound signals estimation is proposed. The approach is based on the distance difference of arrival (DDOA) and a uniform linear sensor array in a 2D plane; it performs a nonlinear mapping between the DDOA vectors and angles of arrival (AOA). We found that the topological order of DDOA vectors and AOAs of same signals is uniform; thus, the topological order preserving of SOM network makes it valid to estimate AOA through DDOA. From the results of simulations and lake experiments, it is shown that the network has the advantage of accuracy and robustness, can be trained in advance, and is easy to implement.

Description: Joint roughness coefficient (JRC) is a major factor that affects the mechanical properties of rock joints. Statistical methods that are used to calculate the JRC increasingly depend on a sampling interval (Δx). The variation rules of fitting parameters a, b, and b/a at different Δx values were analyzed on the basis of the relationship between the JRC and statistical parameter Z2. The relationship between the fitting parameters a and b was deduced in accordance with the ten standard profiles proposed by Barton. Empirical formulas for the JRC, Z2, and Δx were also established. The estimation accuracy of the JRC was the highest in the analysis of Δx values within 0.1–5.0 mm. JRC tests were conducted through inverse value comparative analysis. Results showed that the outcome calculated using the general formula and the JRC inverse values demonstrate improved agreement and verify the rationality of the general formula. The proposed formula can perform rapid and simple JRC calculation within the Δx range of 0.1–5.0 mm using Z2, thereby indicating favorable application prospects.
