Notes: The behavior of tethered polymers on gel/gel adhesion is studied with the single-chain mean-field (SCMF) theory. It is shown that the gel surface structure, the gel/gel adhesion strength, the equilibrium gel/gel distance, and the detailed interface structures can be tailored by specifically designed tethered layers on gel surfaces. The SCMF theory allows to study the effect of various variables of tethered layers, such as the surface coverage, the attraction between polymers and gels, and the composition of block copolymers. These theoretical results provide guidelines for experimental designs of novel gel materials with tethered layers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe a laser heated diamond anvil cell system at the GeoSoilEnviroCARS sector at the Advanced Photon Source. The system can be used for in situ x-ray measurements at simultaneously ultrahigh pressures (to 〉150 GPa) and ultrahigh temperatures (to 〉4000 K). Design goals of the laser heating system include generation of a large heating volume compared to the x-ray beam size, minimization of the sample temperature gradients both radially and axially in the diamond anvil cell, and maximization of heating stability. The system is based on double-sided laser heating technique and consists of two Nd:YLF lasers with one operating in TEM00 mode and the other in TEM01* mode, optics to heat the sample from both sides, and two spectroradiometric systems for temperature measurements on both sides. When combined with an x-ray microbeam (3–10 μm) technique, a temperature variation of less than 50 K can be achieved within an x-ray sampled region for longer than 10 min. The system has been used to obtain in situ structural data and high temperature equations of state on metals, oxides, and silicates to 3500 K and 160 GPa. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Description: Vibration signal, as an important means for diesel engine condition detection and fault diagnosis, has attracted attention for many years. In traditional vibration signal analysis, most processing methods are for single-channel data. However, single-channel vibration signal cannot reflect the operating information of the diesel engine comprehensively because diesel engine vibration is coupled by multiple source signals. This paper proposes the MVMD band energy method for fault diagnosis by four channels of vibration signals. First, the original multivariate signals are decomposed adaptively by MVMD, which obtains a series of components with modal alignment. Then, the band energy values of each measuring point are calculated as the fault characteristics. Finally, SVM is used to realize the diagnosis and identification of diesel engine misfire. The working conditions have a great influence on the vibration signal of the cylinder. In order to obtain the best diagnostic working conditions, six working conditions are set for testing. The result shows that the fault identification rate is highest under the 1500 rpm and 50% load working condition. The fault recognition rate of this method reaches more than 99%, which is superior to the other four common methods.

Description: In this study, we developed a new method for in-situ pressure determination in multi-anvil, high-pressure apparatus using an acoustic travel time approach within the framework of acoustoelasticity. The ultrasonic travel times of polycrystalline Al 2 O 3 were calibrated against NaCl pressure scale up to 15 GPa and 900 °C in a Kawai-type double-stage multi-anvil apparatus in conjunction with synchrotron X-radiation, thereby providing a convenient and reliable gauge for pressure determination at ambient and high temperatures. The pressures derived from this new travel time method are in excellent agreement with those from the fixed-point methods. Application of this new pressure gauge in an offline experiment revealed a remarkable agreement of the densities of coesite with those from the previous single crystal compression studies under hydrostatic conditions, thus providing strong validation for the current travel time pressure scale. The travel time approach not only can be used for continuous in-situ pressure determination at room temperature, high temperatures, during compression and decompression, but also bears a unique capability that none of the previous scales can deliver, i.e., simultaneous pressure and temperature determination with a high accuracy (±0.16 GPa in pressure and ±17 °C in temperature). Therefore, the new in-situ Al 2 O 3 pressure gauge is expected to enable new and expanded opportunities for offline laboratory studies of solid and liquid materials under high pressure and high temperature in multi-anvil apparatus.

Description: To better understand the origin and difference associated with chemical stability, water resistance, and shearing viscosity of three types of different oxidized modified starch-based adhesives, a detailed theoretical investigation from a molecular viewpoint has been performed using the AM1 semiempirical level and the DFT-B3LYP level, respectively. As a result, our findings suggest that, by Mulliken population analysis (MPA), frontier orbital analysis, and electrostatic potential (EP) analysis based on B3LYP/6-31G calculations, the chemical stability, water resistance, and shearing viscosity of the oxidized modified starch-based adhesives are uniformly improved and corresponding difference for each property presents an identical order: the oxidized grafted cross-linked starch-based adhesive 〉 the oxidized grafted starch-based adhesive 〉 the oxidized starch-based adhesive, which is well consistent with experimental results.

Description: Dense stereo correspondence enabling reconstruction of depth information in a scene is of great importance in the field of computer vision. Recently, some local solutions based on matching cost filtering with an edge-preserving filter have been proved to be capable of achieving more accuracy than global approaches. Unfortunately, the computational complexity of these algorithms is quadratically related to the window size used to aggregate the matching costs. The recent trend has been to pursue higher accuracy with greater efficiency in execution. Therefore, this paper proposes a new cost-aggregation module to compute the matching responses for all the image pixels at a set of sampling points generated by a hierarchical clustering algorithm. The complexity of this implementation is linear both in the number of image pixels and the number of clusters. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art local methods in terms of both accuracy and speed. Moreover, performance tests indicate that parameters such as the height of the hierarchical binary tree and the spatial and range standard deviations have a significant influence on time consumption and the accuracy of disparity maps.

Description: The important applications of monocular vision navigation in aerospace are spacecraft ground calibration tests and spacecraft relative navigation. Regardless of the attitude calibration for ground turntable or the relative navigation between two spacecraft, it usually requires four noncollinear feature points to achieve attitude estimation. In this paper, a vision navigation system based on the least feature points is designed to deal with fault or unidentifiable feature points. An iterative algorithm based on the feature point reconstruction is proposed for the system. Simulation results show that the attitude calculation of the designed vision navigation system could converge quickly, which improves the robustness of the vision navigation of spacecraft.

Description: Generally, the phase structure change of Pb(B′ B″)O 3 –PZT solid solutions near a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) can be originated from composition variations. Here our results show that the excess PbO and the sintering temperature can also result in the ferroelectric phase structure change in the Pb(Ni 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 (PNN–PZT)-based ceramics near the MPB. The dielectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric properties are dependent on the tetragonal phase content ( TP ) which is closely associated with the excess PbO and the sintering temperature. The temperature dependence of the polarization ( P )–electric field ( E ) hysteresis loops reveals that the tetragonal phase in the PNN–PZT-based ceramics has a lower activation energy ( E a ) for domain wall movement than that of the rhombohedral phase, thus resulting in easier polarization rotation. This is responsible for the phase structure–electrical property relationships in the PNN–PZT-based ceramics, exhibiting the dependence of the tetragonal phase content ( TP ) on the electrical properties.

Description: In this paper, we study the long time behavior of solutions to a weakly dissipative fractional Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation on the real line R . The main difficulty lies in that the dissipative term is a nonlocal operator. We overcome this difficulty by the commutator estimates and product estimates associated with fractional Laplacian. The asymptotical compactness of solution semigroup is proved by the tail estimates. Finally, we conclude the existence of ( H 2 ( R ), H 5 ( R )) global attractor of the weakly dissipative fractional KdV equation.

Description: This paper presents two novel UHF RFID near-field reader antennas with uniform vertical electric field distribution. The two antennas have the following common characteristics. First, the radiating parts of the two antennas are simulated and fabricated by the microstrip lines and work using the leakage wave principle of microstrip lines. Second, the end of microstrip lines match the load to form a traveling wave mode of operation, so the two antennas have broadband characteristics. Third, both antennas are fed in a coaxial manner at the center of the antenna. The simulation and measurement results can show that the proposed three-branch antenna and four-branch antenna achieve good impedance matching in the range of 883–960 MHz and 870–960 MHz, respectively, and achieve uniform distribution of the vertical electric field component in a certain area. The reading areas of the three-branch antenna and the four-branch antenna are 70 mm × 70 mm × 90 mm and 100 mm × 100 mm × 120 mm (length × width × height), respectively. Due to the introduction of the ground plate, the antenna gain is low, which meets the design requirements of near-field antennas.
