Notes: In the domain of supply chain management or logistics, there exists a large gap between the needs of companies and the wealth of available best practices. To remedy this situation, we have built a causal model. This causal model relates the use of best practices to the resulting performances, grouped under four main objectives: flexibility, reaction time, quality and cost. Furthermore, based on this model, a logistic audit has been developed to provide a systematic review of logistic performance. It allows companies to obtain an idea about their rate of use of best practices, and their effectiveness based on the key metrics. Because the best practice audit uses a scoring system, it is possible to compare different companies and thus construct a benchmarking database. As in any benchmarking scheme, any gaps give important indications where to improve. The novel idea is the causal model, which indicates which best practices are most likely to improve the specific lagging metrics.

Notes: Due to changes in the company and its environment, distribution control requirements will change. Knowledge of the criteria influencing the successful application of distribution control techniques is needed in order to make these changes. This article investigates these criteria. After a description of redesign of distribution systems, a framework of control decisions is introduced and explained. It is then shown how each of the decisions depends on the characteristics of the products distributed, the markets served and the processes used.

Notes: In the past many scientists have published papers on hormesis, onmolecular stress responses, and on the similia principle in homoeopathy.Very few, however, have stressed a common base of interdependence ofthese fields. Reviews the most important of these studies to demonstratetheir evolution and their mutual importance. Furthermore, amultidisciplinary approach is chosen to demonstrate research into thebeneficial effects of subharmful doses of toxicants administered insuboptimal conditions (such as in stressed or injured organisms andcells).

Notes: Given the growing number of firms that use direct mail, it is important to develop methods to improve response rates. Better selection methods are useful for this improvement; determining the important characteristics of the mailing and constructing an optimal design is another way to improve the response. In this paper we focus on the latter. A framework is presented to obtain the optimal direct mail design. We propose and compare two ways of data collection, one in an experimental setting and one in a field-experimental setting. Both approaches are illustrated with an empirical application for a charity institution, referring to the development of an optimal design of an envelope and a letter.

Notes: Investigates the effectiveness of on-the-job training (OJT). Presents a definition of OJT used for this research project which involved two studies: the first in the call centres of a large company, and the second in post offices. Gives the results of the study which indicate the OJT programs were only partially successful in realising training goals. Indicates that self-efficacy, prior experience with tasks, managerial support and workload were the most powerful predictors for training effectiveness. Concludes that the evidence suggests that OJT is not entirely an effective training method although more research is needed in this area.

Notes: Describes anti-money laundering statutes within the US federal criminal code. Introduces the USA's Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), a record-keeping and reporting statute that also requires financial institutions to implement comprehensive anti-money laundering programmes; its enforcement authority is generally exercised through the Financial Crime Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Outlines the bank regulatory authority, administrative sanctions, civil money penalties, and the "death penalty", which is termination of a national bank's franchise. Discusses recent enforcement actions by FinCEN, the Department of Justice, and Federal banking agencies. Concludes that the apparent trend towards more substantial fines and other sanctions for BSA violations will probably accelerate for various reasons.

Notes: Reviews and synthesizes the literature addressing the concept of strategic orientation and examines the relationship between strategic orientation and export success. Uses survey data from experienced export managers to test the relationship between proactive and reactive strategic orientations and success in exporting empirically. Key dimensions of a proactive strategic orientation are found to be significantly correlated with export success.

Notes: Focuses on two fundamental issues facing firms competing in the global arena, namely - how should executives responsible for success in international consumer markets allocate their scare marketing resources? And why, based on what methods, should they do this? Concentrating on global/pan-European consumers in the northern European country of Finland, a quasi-longitudinal "gap analysis" of US versus Japanese product and marketing efforts is undertaken. Using empirical evidence gathered every five years (from 1975 to 1995), this research examines which dimensions of marketing contribute most to specific consumers' "purchase and use" preferences? And, where (which "gaps") should organizations competing for global consumers concentrate their marketing efforts in order to be successful? It is argued that the method employed in this research can be utilized in any global marketing setting to identify the most promising areas for resource expenditures.

Notes: Reports the results of a study of experienced exporters and their perceived importance of various types of foreign market information relevant to target market selection. In general, findings indicate that information related to market potential is most highly valued, and information related to culture is rated least important. Differences in perceived importance ratings across types of industry, country of destination, and type of export transaction are examined and implications for exporters, export facilitators, and government agencies are presented.

Notes: Over the last five years, the once vaulted system known as productmanagement has been under attack. Challenged by a variety ofmega-trends, including rising consumer expectations and expertise, revolutionary changes in technology, and shifting power in channels ofdistribution, product managers now face an environment much moredemanding than that of the past. Examines the role of product managersof consumer goods in this new environment, within the context of aconceptual model developed to understand better the dynamics underlyingtheir job performance and satisfaction. The model highlights theinteractions among boundary spanning, information power andinterfunctional coordination, and incorporates the concepts of strategicorientation, role conflict and role ambiguity. In all, 17 propositionsare advanced for future empirical testing.
