Notes: In today's competitive global economy, every business can benefit frommanaging its operations in a cost-efficient manner. Managing materialsshould be no exception and the effect of inflation on ordering policiesfor purchased materials and supplies should be carefully analysed. It isvery likely that a business can place itself in an advantageous positionby changing its ordering policies in response to unfavourable economicconditions in its future operating environment. Presents a total costmodel and, through simulation analysis, shows that inflationaryconditions do affect lot sizes. Also shows that there are instanceswhere lot sizes stay stable before changing again in response toincrease in inflationary rates.

Notes: Compares the research done in the area of JIT implementation in thepast decade, identifies critical JIT elements, and groups the elementsinto broader factors. An extensive literature search was conducted toidentify over 130 JIT implementation articles published in bothprofessional journals and proceedings. Initial screening process led tothe identification of 105 JIT implementation research articles publishedsince 1980. Each of these 105 articles was reviewed to identify 28 JITimplementation elements. These JIT implementation elements aresubsequently grouped into five broader factors. Criteria as the measureof importance of these elements was based on the frequency of citation. The results obtained from this research show that elimination of wasteand production strategy are the most specific critical factors of JITimplementation. Followed by three other critical factors: qualitycontrol and quality improvement, management commitment and employeeparticipation, and vendor/supplier participation.

Notes: Total quality management (TQM) has been acclaimed as an organizational philosophy to enhance global competitiveness. Will TQM continue to be a management philosophy of the future in same shape, size, and design? This paper, through literature search and using field experts, identifies the future role of TQM in businesses facing global markets.

Notes: Quickly responding to customer needs has become a major priority for retail businesses such as grocery operations. Customer satisfaction is an absolute for staying competitive in these retail operations. This paper discusses efficient consumer response (ECR) as a supply chain strategy in grocery businesses by analyzing the adoption of ECR strategy by five major grocery operations in US markets. Furthermore, a management action plan is presented for future adoption of ECR strategy by similar business operations.

Notes: Cooperative learning process has been suggested by few researchers as a tool to enhance classroom learning, however, implementation of cooperative learning process in education has not been addressed in the previous studies. This paper, drawing a parallel between cooperative learning and total quality management (TQM), proposes the use of specific TQM principles to enhance the learning process. Through developing an instrument based on quality elements, the authors propose that adopting principles of teamwork and empowerment can enhance classroom learning. Additionally, based on a pilot study, specific guidelines are suggested for faculty interested in adopting similar concepts for increased classroom learning and future research into this area.

Notes: Total quality has been acclaimed as an organizational philosophy to enhance global competitiveness. However, changing paradigms in global business operations require that quality concepts like TQM be revised to reflect the changing nature of global competitiveness. This paper, using the existing literature and interactions with the real world managers, presents a conceptual quality framework that can be deployed to enhance the competitiveness of businesses operating in global environments. Specifically, this paper details those quality elements that can affect quality improvement efforts through a variety of cultural differences that one may encounter while managing global operations. Also, proposed are managerial guidelines for implementing quality in the global arena.

Notes: The intent of this empirical research is to identify the critical factors that are potentially "fatal" to productivity improvement programs and to analyze these factors relative to documented quality concepts. From this analysis we determine that these "fatal" factors can be prevented by the pre-existence of a quality program, specifically total quality management, which requires participative involvement of all members of an organization, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.

Notes: This paper argues that solely depending on short-term financial performance indicators to justify the benefits of JIT implementation is very misleading and could harm a company's future long-term survival. The empirical study presented in this paper investigated the effect of (JIT) implementation on the use of operation performance measures. Furthermore, the effect of the JIT implementation and the use of the operating performance measures on firms' financial/growth performance, as perceived by the managers, was examined. These effects were measured using path analysis to show direct and indirect effects of JIT practices on the other two variables. Analyses indicate that, although correlations do exist between JIT practices and managerial perceptions of a firm's financial performance, the relationships are mostly the result of spurious effects. Direct and indirect effects realized from the JIT practices on financial/growth performance are almost non-existent.

Notes: Purpose - Aims to compare performance measurement of a continuous process manufacturing operation under two accounting systems - a traditional cost accounting system and the theory of constraints (TOC) system. Design/methodology/approach - Using a computer-based simulation methodology to capture operational performance, it is found that the TOC-based accounting system presents a more realistic state of performance scenario. Findings - Findings from this research indicate that businesses using a TOC-based system can improve their performance more accurately, and hence gain a sustainable competitive position in the future. Research limitations/implications - This research is limited to continuous process manufacturing operations. Originality/value - The research makes a significant contribution to the knowledge of performance measurement.
