Notes: The objective of performance measurement has changed over the past few decades. Traditional performance measures based on productivity are no longer appropriate or representative of the information needs of today's competitive global market. Alternative performance systems have been proposed that range from time as the basis of all measures to the integration of a variety of performance measures. Reviews and analyses the limitations of traditional approaches to performance measurement as well as the emerging trends in performance measurement system development. Reveals that the basis of performance measurement is changing and that there are certain characteristics that are necessary in order to produce information that is relevant for improving world-class manufacturing performance.

Notes: Life-cycle analysis (LCA) provides a general framework for assessing and summarizing all of the information important to a decision. LCA has been used to analyze the desirability of replacing lead (Pb) with a composite of tungsten (W) and tin (Sn) in projectile slugs used in small arms ammunition at US Department of Energy (DOE) training facilities for security personnel. The analysis includes consideration of costs, performance, environmental and human health impacts, availability of raw materials, and stakeholder acceptance. Projectiles developed by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) using a composite of tungsten and tin are shown to perform as well as, or better than, those fabricated using lead. A cost analysis shows that tungsten-tin is less costly to use than lead, since, for the current number of rounds used annually, the higher tungsten-tin purchase price is small compared with higher maintenance costs associated with lead. The tungsten-tin composite presents a much smaller potential for adverse human health and environmental impacts than lead. Only a small fraction of the world's tungsten production occurs in the USA, however, and market-economy countries account for only around 15 per cent of world tungsten production. Concludes that stakeholders would prefer tungsten-tin on the basis of total cost, performance, reduced environmental impact and lower human toxicity. However, lead is preferable on the basis of material availability. Life cycle analysis clearly shows that advantages outweigh disadvantages in replacing lead with tungsten-tin in small-caliber projectiles at DOE training facilities. Concerns about the availability of raw tungsten are mitigated by the ease of converting back to lead (if necessary) and the recyclability of tungsten-tin rounds.

Notes: The experience of women in international management - especially within a European context - has received little attention in the international human resource management literature. In particular, there is a dearth of empirical research which details the role and career moves of the senior female international manager. The particular focus of this paper is on the senior female international managerial career move in Europe. A total of 50 senior female expatriate managers were interviewed, representing a wide range of industry and service sectors. The article highlights a number of covert and overt barriers which the interviewees believed limit women's international career opportunities. The findings indicate that it is timely for organisations to face and address the difficulties female managers encounter in their progression to senior managerial positions in order to ensure that future opportunities for progression to senior management is equal to that of their male counterparts.

Notes: Examines the effect of the quality of a salesperson's relationship with a customer on the likelihood of retaining that customer's business. Assesses the effects of high/low-quality buyer-salesperson relationships on obtaining referrals and recommendations from a customer. Results indicate that buyers who rated the quality of their relationship with their salesperson as above average were more likely to remain. In addition, above average buyer-salesperson relationships were more likely to generate recommendations and referrals from customers. Suggests that a salesperson's efforts to build relationships are rewarded by greater customer retention and increased business through referrals and recommendations.

Notes: Examines the responses of national account decision makers to open-ended questions asking for their views on what salespeople need to do to build relationships, and categorizes the results. Eight categories of responses were found. These categories address a number of salesperson behaviors and attitudes - some of which have not been empirically examined in the sales literature. Based on the findings of this study, presents managerial and theoretical implications of these results and implications for future research into buyer-seller relationships.

Notes: Quality improvement continues to be an important international business strategy as we enter the twenty-first century. Legal requirements, customer demand, market pressure, competition, and the need for in-house quality improvement has driven more companies to become ISO 9000 registered. Implementing ISO 9000 is expensive, time-consuming, and requires significant dedication and effort. Investment in such a project calls for detailed analysis and justification. This research paper proposes a multi-attribute analysis and justification model based on the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) for implementing the ISO 9000 quality system standard. The model is developed based on case studies at companies which underwent the process of registration and by the synthesis of relevant literature both on ISO 9000 and techniques of analysing similar projects. The model has been applied and validated in companies that are both ISO 9000 registered and are pursuing ISO 9000.

Notes: One of the most significant features of the global labour market in the last half of the twentieth century has been the increasing labour force participation rate of women. It is evident from the extant research that women are not progressing to senior international management positions at comparable rates to their male counterparts. Previous research has estimated that only 3 percent of expatriate managers are women. This paper argues that female international managers have to overcome overt and covert barriers in their home organisations before being developed for international assignments. Based on an extensive empirical research study conducted with senior female international managers in a European context, the findings suggest that organisations may have to review their organisational policies in relation to the recruitment, selection, training and development of international managers if they want to have "the best" people to represent their companies overseas.

Notes: Mentoring relationships may be important for female managers seeking career advancement in both domestic and international management. The relative scarcity of mentoring relationships for female managers, particularly outside the USA, raises certain questions. This paper reviews some of the current literature on mentoring in order to highlight the barriers faced by female managers in developing mentoring relationships. In particular, the paper presents the results of empirical research in relation to mentoring conducted with senior female international managers in Europe. The findings suggest that mentoring relationships may be even more important for the career successes of female international managers in comparison to female managers employed in their home-country organisations. Gender differences in mentoring relationships are also discussed. Finally, some implications for practice and an agenda for further research are presented.

Notes: Many articles have been written on how to implement total quality management (TQM) and have stated that customer satisfaction is the key to long-term profits. However, there has been little explicitly stated concerning how a company can meet customer requirements and ensure achievement of business objectives. Traditional TQM approaches have had only an implied relationship to a company's business system and, therefore, have not in practice been integrated within the business system of the company. This paper presents a framework for an approach that integrates the TQM philosophy within the business system context. This framework is illustrated with examples from the Missouri Plant of the Square D Company and the results of implementing the framework over the past four years are discussed.
