Notes: Numerous studies have documented the ways in which work is structured along gender lines. Predominantly such investigations have reported on the inequity of the sexual division of labour and have argued that such gender segregation operates in favour of males, with the majority of female economic activity concentrated in the low-paid areas of the service sector. Further research has explored the sexual stereotyping of the service encounter, and in particular the personification of the service provider epitomizing the service to the consumer. Presents the findings of an in-depth case study conducted within the hotel industry designed to examine the views of hotel workers in a large hotel about the sexual division of labour and sexual stereotyping of individuals within their organization. Explores the origins of these gender divisions within the hotel industry, and locates the prevalence of such an imbalance firmly in the sphere of overall business strategy and hence the human resource strategy of the organization. Discusses the conclusions in terms of the relationship between equal opportunities policies and strategic HRM.

Notes: The treatment of Reynolds equation when the film thickness is unknown and the center of pressure is known, together with the energy and the bending equation, allows a realistic simulation of the performance of large thrust bearing. In a spring-supported thrust-pad bearing the distortion caused by the generated pressure thermal gradient yields a surface profile of opposite shapes. The thermoelastic analysis performed here makes it possible to determine the resultant film shape of the thrust pad.

Notes: This paper examines the effects of resource dependency and contract exclusivity on the attitudes and intentions of consumers in brand alliances. Findings indicate that attitudes of the brands before the alliance (pre-attitudes) have a positive effect on the attitude toward the alliance, which has a positive effect on perceived quality of the alliance, willingness to pay a premium price and purchase intention. Further, attitudes toward the brands after the alliance (post-attitudes) reveal a positive spillover effect for both the host and ally brands. Interestingly, the moderating effects of dependency and exclusivity differ based on whether the brand serves as the host or the ally brand in the alliance. Analyses conducted after controlling for the effects of familiarity of the ally brands revealed consistent results.

Notes: One main concern regarding the use of reference prices in advertisements relates to the possibility of deception due to consumers' positive response towards exaggerated or implausible claims. This paper examines the moderating roles of a contextual variable-market price dispersion for a product category, and that of an individual level variable-need for cognition, in influencing consumer evaluation of reference prices across two experiments. The results support the hypothesized effects of need for cognition and demonstrate that, for low need, for cognition individuals, increasing the level of reference price results in positive effects on value perception and shopping intention.
