    Notes: ‘Lower crustal’ suite xenoliths in basaltic and kimberlitic magmas are dominated by mafic granulites and may also include eclogites and garnet pyroxenites. Pressures of up to 25 kbar obtained from such xenoliths are well in excess of an upper value of c. 12 kbar for exposed granulite terranes. Palaeogeotherms constructed from xenoliths for the lower crust beneath the Phanerozoic fold belts of eastern Australia (SEA) and beneath the eastern margin of the Australian craton (EMAC) indicate two distinct thermal regimes. The two geotherms have similar form, with the EMAC curve displaced c. 150°C to lower temperatures. Reaction microstructures show the partial re-equilibration of primary igneous assemblages to granulite and eclogite assemblages and are interpreted to reflect the cooling from magmatic temperatures. Variations in mineral compositions and zoning are used to constrain further the history of several EMAC xenoliths to near-isobaric trajectories.Detailed graphical models are constructed to predict compositional changes for isobaric P–T paths (at 7, 14 & 21 kbar) to transform an SEA-type geotherm to a cratonic geotherm. The models show that for the assemblage grt + cpx ± ky + plag + qtz, the changes associated with falling temperature in Xgr, Xjd (increase) and Xan (decrease) will be greater at higher pressures. These results indicate that discernible zoning is more likely to be preserved in the higher pressure xenoliths. The zoning recorded in clinopyroxene from mafic granulite xenoliths over the pressure range c. 12–22 kbar suggests isobaric cooling of a large crustal thickness (30–35 km).An isobaric cooling path is consistent with magma accretion models for the transition of a crust–mantle boundary from an SEA-type geotherm to a cratonic geotherm. The coexistence of granulite and eclogite over the depth range 35–75 km beneath the EMAC indicates that the granulite to eclogite transition in the lower crust is controlled by P–T conditions, bulk chemistry and kinetic factors. At shallower crustal levels, typified by exposed granulite terranes, isobaric cooling may not result in the transition to eclogite.

    Notes: This is a preliminary report on an instrument being developed for the measurement of pasture yield in situ. In essence the instrument is an electrical capacitance measuring unit in which the introduction of herbage to a measuring head causes a change in the electrical capacitance of the system. This capacitance change is measured at a radio frequency and used as an indicator of the mass of herbage contained within the measuring head.The development and construction of the instrument is described and data are presented for 15 calibration series in which frequency change has been related to pasture yield.Within series the instrument accounts for approximately 90% of the variation in pasture sample yield measured either as wet, dry or organic matter. However, significant differences exist between series. These differences would give rise to bias if pasture yield were estimated from a prediction equation derived from the pooled data.Possible sources of the differences between series are discussed and avenues for further development indicated.

    Notes: The ability to predict the transport of dissolved gases in the presence of small amounts of trapped gas in an otherwise water-saturated porous medium is needed for a variety of applications. However, an existing model based on equilibrium partitioning of dissolved gas between aqueous and trapped gas phases does not accurately predict the shape of experimentally observed breakthrough and elution curves in column experiments. The objective of this study was to develop and test a kinetic model for dissolved gas transport that combines the advection-dispersion equation with diffusion controlled mass transfer of dissolved gas between the aqueous and trapped gas phases. The model assumes one-dimensional, steady-state ground-water flow, a single dissolved gas component, and a stationary trapped gas phase with constant volume. The model contains three independent parameters: the Peclet number, P, retardation factor, R, and dimensionless mass transfer parameter, ω. The model accurately described the shape of breakthrough and elution curves for dissolved oxygen in column experiments performed with a poorly graded sand and varying amount and composition of trapped gas. Estimated values of P for the bromide tracer increased from 5.92 to 174, corresponding to a decrease in dispersivity from 5.02 to 0.17 cm, as the trapped gas volume increased from 0 to 30% of the pore space. It is speculated that this effect is due to a narrower pore size distribution (and hence more uniform pore scale velocity distribution) caused by trapped gas bubbles selectively occupying the largest pores. Estimated values of R increased from 1 to 13.6 as the trapped gas volume increased and confirmed earlier observations that even small amounts of trapped gas can significantly reduce rates of dissolved oxygen transport. Estimated values of ω ranged from 0.3 to 12.1. Although it was not possible to independently measure mass transfer coefficients or interfacial areas, values computed from flow rates and estimated w values are consistent with values computed by assuming (1) that interfacial area is proportional to trapped gas volume, (2) that trapped gas bubbles are spheres with diameters the same size as soil particles, and (3) that mass transfer is limited by diffusion of dissolved oxygen through water films surrounding trapped gas bubbles.

    Notes: Quantitative information on dissolved gas transport in ground water aquifers is needed for a variety of site characterization and remedial design applications. The objective of this study was to gain further understanding of dissolved gas transport in the presence of trapped gas in the pore space of an otherwise water saturated porous medium, using a combination of laboratory experiments and numerical modeling. Transport experiments were conducted in a large-scale (4 × 2 × 0.2 m) laboratory physical aquifer model containing a homogeneous sandpack. Tracer (Br−) and dissolved gas (O2 or H2) plumes were created using a two-well injection/extraction scheme and then were allowed to drift in a uniform flow field. Plume locations and shapes were monitored by measuring tracer and dissolved gas concentrations as a function of position within the sandpack and tune. In all experiments, partitioning of the dissolved gases between the mobile ground water and stationary trapped gas phases resulted in substantial retardation and tailing of the dissolved O2 and H2 plumes relative to the Br− plumes. Most observed plume features could be reproduced in simulations performed with a numerical model that combined the advection-dispersion equation with diffusion controlled mass transfer of dissolved gas between the mobile aqueous and stationary trapped gas phases. Fitted values of the volumetric trapped gas content and mass transfer coefficient ranged from 0.04 to 0.08 and from 10−6to 10−5 sec−1, respectively. Sensitivity analyses were used to examine how systematic variations in these parameters would be expected to affect dissolved gas transport under a range of potential field conditions. The experimental and modeling results indicate that diffusion controlled mass transfer should be considered when predicting dissolved gas transport in ground water aquifers in the presence of trapped gas.

    Notes: In situ bioremediation of contaminated aquifers is often limited by the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the ground water. Various methods have been used to increase dissolved oxygen concentrations in ground water, but the effect of a trapped gas phase on the distribution and transport of dissolved oxygen needs to be understood. The two-dimensional transport of dissolved oxygen is investigated in experiments conducted in a large-scale physical aquifer model (2 m × 4 m × 0.2 m) where a gas phase is trapped in the pore spaces of an otherwise-saturated porous medium. The transport of dissolved oxygen is shown to be retarded up to 11.2 times the transport of the bulk water due to the mass transfer of oxygen between the aqueous phase and the trapped gas phase. The theoretical model for dissolved gas transport in the presence of a trapped gas phase is evaluated in a two-dimensional ground-water flow field using the U.S.G.S. numerical model MOC. The results show that dissolved oxygen transport can be modeled with the advection-dispersion equation with linear equilibrium mass transfer but only when the longitudinal dispersion is increased compared to the value determined using a bromide tracer of the water flow. Increased longitudinal dispersion of the dissolved oxygen plume may be due to a temporally or spatially varying retardation factor or rate-limited mass transfer. The presence of even a small amount of a trapped gas phase in an aquifer will significantly affect the distribution and transport of dissolved oxygen (trapped gas filling only 5% of the pore space will cause a retardation factor for oxygen of 2.6 at T = 15°C) and thus should be considered when designing ways to increase the dissolved oxygen concentration in ground water for in situ bioremediation.
