Beschreibung: An experimental study about the anisotropic wetting behavior of a surface patterned with parallel grooves is presented as an application example of a novel technique for investigation of complete and partial anisotropic wetting on structured surface by X-ray microtomography. Shape of glycerin droplets on such surface is investigated by X-ray micro computed tomography (microCT) acting as a non-intrusive, full volume 3D microscope with micrometric spatial resolution. The reconstructed drop volumes enable to estimate the exact volumes of the drops, their base contours, and 3D static contact angles, based on true cross-sections of the drop-surface couple. Droplet base contours are compared to approximate geometrical contour shapes proposed in the literature. Contact angles along slices parallel and perpendicular to the grooves direction are compared with each other. The effect of the sessile drop volume on the wetting behavior is discussed. The proposed technique, which is applicable for any structured surface, enables the direct measure of Wenzel ratio based on the microCT scan in the wetted region usually inapproachable by any others. Comparisons with simplified models are presented and congruence of results with respect to the minimum resolution needed is evaluated and commented.

Notizen: We performed numerical diagonalization studies of the periodic Anderson Model on finite chains up to 6 sites, in the integral valence limit for T=0. We find that in the weak coupling (Kondo) region the hybridization between f and conduction electrons induces pronounced correlations between the f spins. These correlations are ferromagnetic for low filling and become antiferromagnetic close to half-filling, with a smooth transition between the limiting cases. In no limit can the physics be completely described by a Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida effective spin Hamiltonian, as f and conduction band electrons are always correlated. To study the onset of long range order we considered also a simpler model for the half-filled case, called "Kondo necklace.'' We studied the model at T=0 by numerical diagonalization and finite-size scaling, on chains up to 12 sites. We find that below a finite critical value of the Kondo coupling there exists a gapless phase with quasi long range antiferromagnetic correlations.

Notizen: Many U and Pr compounds presenting localized electron behavior are conveniently described in terms of crystal electric field (CF) acting on the J=4 ground multiplet. In particular, compounds having the ThCr2Si2- or CaBe2Ge2-type structure are characterized by a tetragonal CF at the magnetic site. We have developed a method allowing us to estimate the five CF parameters in the case of a singlet CF ground state, a situation in which a Van Vleck induced magnetism can exist. This is done by imposing a priori some experimental constraints, in particular a self-consistent condition on the ordered moment and the ordering temperature. We apply the method to UPt2Si2, PrFe2Si2, and PrFe2Ge2. In the U compound we find that the value of the ordered moment can be accounted for in the localized model. For the two Pr compounds, we find that details of the CF splittings can produce the two very different values of the ordered moment observed.

Notizen: The recursion operator and the bi-Hamiltonian structure for an integrable two-dimensional version of the Toda chain are algorithmically derived from the corresponding linear problem. The intimate relation between two-dimensional theories and non-Abelian one-dimensional theories is emphasized. The analogies and differences between discrete and continuous integrable two-dimensional systems are pointed out and discussed.

Notizen: The simplest generalization of the intermediate long-wave hierarchy (ILW) is considered to show how to extend the Zakharov–Shabat dressing method to nonlocal, i.e., integro-partial differential, equations. The purpose is to give a procedure of constructing the zero-curvature representation of this class of equations. This result obtains by combining the Drinfeld–Sokolov formalism together with the introduction of an operator-valued spectral parameter, namely, a spectral parameter that does not commute with the space variable x. This extension provides a connection between the ILWk hierarchy and the Saveliev–Vershik continuum graded Lie algebras. In the case of ILW2 the Fairlie–Zachos sinh-algebra was found.

Notizen: A new, pulsed nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectrometer capable of performing a variety of pulsed and swept experiments is described. The spectrometer features phase locked, superheterodyne detection using a commercial spectrum analyzer and a fully automatic, computer-controlled tuning and matching network. The tuning and matching network employs stepper motors which turn high power air gap capacitors in a "moving grid" optimization strategy to minimize the reflected power from a directional coupler. In the duplexer circuit, digitally controlled relays are used to switch different lengths of coax cable appropriate for the different radio frequencies. A home-built pulse programmer card controls the timing of radio frequency pulses sent to the probe, while data acquisition and control software is written in Microsoft Quick Basic. Spin-echo acquisition experiments are typically used to acquire the data, although a variety of pulse sequences can be employed. Scan times range from one to several hours depending upon the step resolution and the spectral range required for each experiment. Pure NQR spectra of NaNO2 and 3-aminopyridine are discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Experimental 120-turn thin-film inductive heads have been built. The key features of this head are the 6-μm pitch helical coils and an omega-shaped, planar yoke structure having dual easy axes. Hardbaked photoresist insulator layers are used to encapsulate the yoke and to smooth out the wafer surface topography. Micro-Kerr studies show that the easy axis remains in the transverse direction in the yokes after multiple anneals. The P1/G/P2 is 3.8/0.3/3.8 μm, and the yoke length is close to 1 mm. The helical coils were built with a novel process that combines yoke/stud coplating and a photoresist planarization process. The coil resistance is 68Ω and the inductance is 5.5 μH. The yoke saturates at 5 mA. The heads were tested over disks having Mrt of 2.5 memu/cm2 and Hc of 1500 Oe. The write threshold current is 5.3 mA (peak-to-peak) and the overwrite is 30 dB. The isolated pulse amplitude Vpp is 10.3 μV/(TwV), where track width Tw is in μm and the linear velocity V in m/s.

Notizen: A simple photocathode for electron injection into high-density gas is described. Relatively large electronic current pulses have been obtained by using a commerical low-power xenon flash lamp. The photocathode efficiency has been studied as a function of the metal film thickness. The device has been used in swarm experiments at pressures up to 10 MPa in the temperature range 40–300 K.

Notizen: It is shown that the following elementary geometric properties of the motion of a discrete (i.e., piecewise linear) curve select the integrable dynamics of the Ablowitz–Ladik hierarchy of evolution equations: (i) the set of points describing the discrete curve lie in the sphere S3; (ii) the distance between any two subsequent points does not vary in time; (iii) the equations of the dynamics do not depend explicitly on the radius of the sphere. These results generalize to a discrete context the previous work on continuous curves [A. Doliwa and P. M. Santini, Phys. Lett. A 185, 373 (1994)]. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A method for solving a class of nonlinear singular integral evolution equations for decaying initial values on the line is presented. The underlying scattering problem is a matrix Riemann–Hilbert problem. Scattering analysis shows that the spectrum is purely discrete. An application is to the so-called sine–Hilbert equation Hθt =−c sin θ, where c is a constant and H denotes the Hilbert transform.
