Notes: Summary β-Keto esters derived from dipeptides are prepared by application of common methodologies employed for the synthesis of amino acid-derived β-keto esters; however, epimerization of the C-terminal residue occurred to different extents depending on the method. In imidazolide activated dipeptides, this epimerization is due to the CDI activation step and to the configurational instability of the intermediate imidazolides in different reaction media. Regarding yield and diastereomeric purity, the method of choice proved to be the reaction of dipeptide-derived imidazolide with the potassium salt of malonic half esters in the presence of MgCl2.

Notes: Abstract Relationships between molecular shape and its crystal packing are studied. The XRD crystal structure of macrocrystals and microcrystals of C6H5HgX, and their VDW packing analysis, suggest two isoenergetic packing models for racket-like molecules. One of them favoring the crystal growth, and the other more frequent forming microcrystalline aggregates.

Notes: Abstract X-ray powder diffractometry was used to characterize the phases produced during the preparation of MoS2 catalysts promoted with Co, by the impregnated thiosalt method. After a crystallization process at 673 K and 1043 K the X-ray analysis seems to indicate the presence of a mixed CoMo sulfide, in addition to the MoS2 and Co9S8.

Notes: Summary The association of H+ and Cu2+ with malonate, maleate, succinate and phthalate ions has been investigated both potentiometrically and calorimetrically at 25° and I = 0.1 mol dm−3 (NaClO4). The structures of the complexes existing in aqueous solution are proposed on the basis of thermodynamic data.

Notes: Abstract  The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of salinity on the symbiotic efficiencies and mycelial infectivity of two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), one isolated from saline soils (Glomus sp.) and the other (Glomus deserticola) from nonsaline soils (belonging to the Estación Experimental del Zaidín collection). Lettuce plants inoculated with either of these two fungi or maintained as uninoculated controls were grown in soil with three salt concentrations (0.25, 0.50 or 0.75 g NaCl kg–1 dry soil). Both AMF protected host plants against salinity. However, when the results of shoot dry weight and nutrient contents were expressed relative to the total length of mycorrhiza formed, it was found that both AMF differed in their symbiotic efficiencies. These differences were more evident at the two highest salt levels. Glomus sp.-colonized plants grew less and accumulated less N and P, whereas they formed a higher amount of mycorrhiza. The mechanism by which Glomus sp. protected plants from the detrimental effects of salt was based on the stimulation of root development, while the effects of G. deserticola were based on improved plant nutrition. The increase in salinity of soil decreased the hyphal growth and/or viability of Glomus sp. to a higher extent than those of G. deserticola since the mycelial network generated by G. deserticola was more infective than that of Glomus sp.

Notes: Abstract The Ga(III)-7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid complex in the presence of suitable micelles and with sodium sulfite as oxygen scavenger exhibited strong phosphorescence at room temperature in aqueous solutions. This micellar reaction provides the basis for a convenient phosphorimetric determination of traces of gallium. Different types of micelles showed their maximum enhancing effects at different pH ranges, affording greater convenience for various analytical purposes. A phosphorimetric procedure with surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as enhancing agent is proposed. The detection limit for gallium was 5 ng/ml and the calibration graph was rectilinear in the range of 5 to 600 ng/ml. The relative standard deviation was 4% at 50 ng/ml level. The applicability of this room-temperature phosphorimetric procedure to multi-component analyses for the group III elements, Al(III), Ga(III), and In(III), was demonstrated. Kalman filtering was used to deconvolute the phosphorescence spectra of mixtures of aluminium and gallium allowing the simultaneous determination of both metals with satisfactory results.

Notes: Summary Triethylamine is a selective precipitant for phosphomolybdic acid which allows separation of orthophosphate from phosphoric acid esters and anhydrides. In this paper a simple method for the estimation of the orthophosphate-triethylamine-rnolybdate complex, based on its ultraviolet absorption spectrum, is described. The precipitate, corresponding to a range of 5–250 nmole of orthophosphate, is dissolved in 3 ml of methanol and the absorbance of the solution measured at 320 nm against water. The molar absorptivity of the complex at this wavelength is 2.09 × 1071·mole−1·cm−1.

Notes: Abstract Ga(III) and In(III) react with 7-iodo-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid (Ferron) in the presence of CTAB micelles, forming complexes which exhibit analytically useful room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). The RTP features of the two complexes are similar and the RTP spectra overlap. However, there is sufficient difference between the two phosphorescence decay rates for both metals to be determined by time-resolved room-temperature phosphorimetry.

Notes: Abstract Chemical studies performed in the last 50 years on the northern and southern basins of Lago di Lugano are reviewed and discussed in relation to the phosphorus and nitrogen loads from the drainage area. Both basins became eutrophic in the fifties as a consequence of the dense population and industrial activity in the drainage area; the effect of these was aggravated by the meromictic condition of the layer below 100 m in the northern basin. The reduction of phosphorus loads in progress since 1976 has resulted in a significant improvement in the chemical and biological condition of the southern basin and the upper 100 m of water in the northern basin. On the other hand, the balance between dissolved oxygen and reducing substances in the northern basin is shifting toward a decrease of the net oxygen concentration, partly as a consequence of the unusually dry conditions of the last three years. A reduction in phosphorus load down to 18 and 22 t a−1 in the northern and southern basins respectively is still necessary in order to reduce the lake phosphorus concentration to 30–35 µg O l−1.
