Notizen: Cathodoluminescence spectra from microwave-plasma-assisted chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) diamond have been studied as a function of temperature at low electron energies. This investigation shows a pronounced difference between the luminescence spectra from CVD diamond films as grown and CVD diamond films annealed by rapid thermal processing at 1000 °C for one minute in an argon atmosphere. The relative intensities of the dominant features at 443 nm (2.8 eV) and 510 nm (2.4 eV) are very different for unannealed and annealed samples. We report measurements of the temperature dependence of these luminescence bands. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Multilayer Pd/Pd(1.2 at. % Fe)/Pd thin films were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering and characterized with dc SQUID magnetometry. Evidence for two-dimensional (2D) Heisenberg and 2D XY model behaviors was found in two different regions of temperature. In these temperature regimes, our data agree with the predicted form for magnetization M and susceptibility χ as functions of field and temperature. Both model's susceptibilities were found to fit our data. M and χ exhibit discontinuities at magnetic layer thickness-dependent temperatures which separate the different model behaviors.

Notizen: Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies are reported for the first time on the various isotopomers of the CH3Cd radical isolated in neon and argon matrices. The radicals were generated in neon matrices by the reaction of laser-ablated cadmium metal and various methyl precursors, and in argon matrices by x-irradiation. The neon matrix values measured were g⊥=1.9491(1), A⊥(H)=17.0(1) MHz, A⊥(D)=2.6(1) MHz, A⊥(13C)=163(3) MHz, and A⊥(111Cd)=−3083(3) MHz, and estimates were derived for A(parallel)(13C)=230(50) MHz and A(parallel)(111Cd)=−3486(5) MHz. The argon matrix values measured were g⊥=1.952(1), A⊥(H)=16(1) MHz and A⊥(111Cd)=−3301(3) MHz, and an estimate was derived for A(parallel)(111Cd)=−3704(5) MHz. The ESR experimental Adip(111Cd) values for the neon and the argon matrices agree with the reported gas-phase value [J. Chem. Phys. 101, 6396 (1994)]. The matrix ESR Aiso(111Cd) values show small shifts compared with the gas-phase results (5% greater for the neon matrix and 12% greater for the argon matrix). At 4.3 K in the neon matrices, additional ESR lines assigned to tunneling phenomena were observed. The radical geometry obtained from ab initio calculations was consistent with that reported from the various experimental results. Multireference single and double excitation configuration interaction (MRSDCI) calculations of the hyperfine interactions gave values that were consistently below the experimental values of Aiso and Adip for 111Cd, H, and 13C. MRSDCI calculations for the CdH radical showed an analogous trend. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The utilization of high energy generation techniques for trapping ion radicals and other reactive intermediates in neon matrices at 4 K is discussed. Electron spin resonance (ESR) results for several small radicals are presented to demonstrate the application of x irradiation and reactive laser vaporization for neon matrix isolation studies. Detailed ESR studies of the PO2 and AsO2 radicals, along with ab initio theoretical computations of their nuclear hyperfine interactions, are presented. No previous ESR observations have been reported for these radicals, although PO2 has been studied under high resolution in the gas phase utilizing far-infrared laser magnetic resonance and microwave spectroscopies. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The effects of 0.1 and 0.5-nm Al and 0.02-nm Ti interlayers on the Sb/(HgCd)Te system have been investigated with photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. With no interlayer, the Sb forms an abrupt, uniform overlayer with a stoichiometric interface and causes no change in the band bending induced during the cleaving process. With the two Al interlayers Sb exhibits less uniform deposition and diffuses into the semiconductor enough to reverse the additional band bending caused by Al in-diffusion. It also reacts with the elemental Al of the 0.5-nm interlayer to form AlSb. The increased disruption of the (HgCd)Te surface by the Ti interlayer leads to enhanced out-diffusion of Te in addition to Sb clustering and in-diffusion. In this case, Sb is able to compensate for the inversion occurring during cleavage and returns the surface to a nearly flat-band condition.

Notizen: We tested the theoretical prediction that the band structures on the opposite sides of a homojunction can be artificially displaced in energy with respect to each other by means of double intralayers of atomiclike thickness, producing band discontinuities of potential interest for practical applications. Evidence of such discontinuities was found when Ga-As, Al-As, Ga-P, or Al-P intralayers were inserted between Si and Si or Ge and Ge.

Notizen: Vibrational spectroscopy is increasingly used as a selective and sensitive probe of the interaction between a given molecule and its environment. For electrochemistry, in particular, vibrational spectroscopy has been useful in the process of sorting reactive intermediates and mechanisms out of the many possibilities which present themselves. In this paper we discuss a general approach to the analysis of environmental effects on molecular vibrations. The objective is to use vibrational spectroscopy to determine values of specific parameters in a set of intra- and intermolecular pair potentials. In the body of this paper, we discuss in detail how one can manipulate a variety of model potential energy functions in order to account for environmental effects. We then apply the method to the adsorption of tetrahedral molecules on a metal surface. We report infrared spectra for sulfate ion adsorbed on a platinum electrode, and we make use of our analysis of the spectra to suggest that the sulfate anion associates with the metal through only one oxygen atom.

Notizen: Experimental observations of a purely elastic flow instability occurring in the lid-driven cavity flow of two semi-dilute polymer solutions are reported and the effect of cavity aspect ratio on the dynamical structure of the unstable flow is quantitatively investigated. The spatial and temporal characteristics of the secondary flow are measured using flow visualization, laser Doppler velocimetry, and digital particle image velocimetry. At the onset conditions the disturbances appear in the form of spatially periodic flow cells which propagate along the neutral direction of the cavity. The secondary flow structure is analogous to the Taylor–Görtler vortices observed in inertially driven hydrodynamic instabilities. The critical onset conditions for two elastic test fluids and five different aspect ratios correlate with a recently proposed dimensionless stability criterion which incorporates measures of the local streamline radius of curvature and the non-Newtonian normal stresses in the flow domain. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The first experimental spectroscopic study of the SiB and SiAl diatomic radicals is reported. Electron spin resonance results indicate that both molecules have X 4Σ ground electronic states, in agreement with earlier theoretical calculations. The SiB and SiAl radicals were generated in neon matrices at 4 K by trapping the products produced from the pulsed laser vaporization of their alloys. Electronic structure information for these radicals is especially interesting given the utilization of silicon doped materials in semiconductor applications. The observed nuclear hyperfine interactions (A tensors) for 10B, 11B, and 27Al in these molecular radicals were compared with the results of ab initio configuration-interaction theoretical calculations which were conducted as part of this experimental study. The neon matrix magnetic parameters (MHz) for Si 11B are D=800(2), g(parallel)=2.0014(8), g⊥=2.0005(4), A⊥=92.4(5), and A(parallel)=111(2). For Si 27Al the results (MHz) are D=9710(2), g(parallel)=1.9994(8), and g⊥=1.9978(4), ||A⊥||=10.3(6), and ||A(parallel)||=43.5(8).
