    Description: The laminar boundary layer on a rotating thin blade of an axial turbomachine is discussed. A method of deriving the basic equations of the flow for a generalized blade configuration is described, treating a typical blade in practical use as an example. A perturbation technique is applied to obtain a series solution composed of two groups of similar functions. The results give insight into the properties of the boundary layer on helical non-loaded blades in a uniform stream, indicating the influence purely of three-dimensionality of the blade configuration. © 1974, Cambridge University Press.     Description: The steady laminar motion of fluid through pipes of circular cross-section, the curvature of whose centre-line varies locally, is analysed theoretically. The flow-in three kinds of pipes whose centre-lines are specified by are treated as the examples of once-, twice- and periodically-curved pipes, respectively. The analysis is valid for any other two-dimensionally curved pipes, when centre-line curvature is small. At very small Reynolds number, the position of maximum axial velocity shifts towards the inner side of the pipe section; at large Reynolds number, on the contrary, it tends to the outer side, owing to centrifugal force. Furthermore, in the latter case, adaptation of the flow follows the change of mean-flow direction, with a phase lag. © 1976, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

    Description: In the present paper, it is intended to give the elementary solutions of three-dimensional unsteady Oseen flow when unsteady concentrated lift and/or drag is applied in the flow field. It is shown that the pressure fields due to concentrated impulsive lift and/or drag can be represented by an impulsive pressure doublet in the direction of the applied force and the corresponding velocity fields by diffusing free doublets in the direction of the external force that are shed from the location of the force application and convected downstream with otherwise uniform velocity. It is also confirmed that combination of the elementary solutions given in the present paper yields the two-dimensional ones. © 1978, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

    Description: The groundmass of andesitic dykes at Sezaki, southwest Japan, has trachytic texture and contains microscopic shear zones. The shear zones comprise a conjugate pair formed by flattening of the solidifying dyke rock, probably caused by the magma pressure of the still molten part of the dyke. This pressure shortened the solidifying rock perpendicular to the dyke margins and caused it to extrude parallel to the magma flow direction. The groundmass shears indicate that locally the magma flowed 60° upward in the dykes. It is concluded that while groundmass shears are a useful indicator of flow direction in dykes, phenocryst alignment in dykes is strongly influenced by magma-pressure flattening and thus may be a poor indicator of flow direction
