Description: Resonant interactions between internal gravity waves propagating in a stratified shear flow are considered for the case when the background density and shear flow vary slowly with respect to the waves. In Grimshaw (1988) triad resonances were considered, and interaction equations derived for the case when the resonance conditions are met only on certain space-time surfaces, being resonance sites. Here this analysis is extended to include higher-order resonances, with the aim of studying resonant wave interactions near a critical level. It is shown that a secondary resonant interaction between two incoming waves, in which two harmonic components of one incoming wave interact with a single harmonic component of another incoming wave, produces a reflected wave. This result is shown to agree with the study of Brown & Stewartson (1980, 1982 a, b) who obtained this same result by a different approach. © 1994, Cambridge University Press

Description: A finite-amplitude long-wave equation is derived to describe the effect of weak current shear on internal waves in a uniformly stratified fluid. This effect is manifested through the introduction of a nonlinear term into the amplitude evolution equation, representing a projection of the shear from physical space to amplitude space. For steadily propagating waves the evolution equation reduces to the steady version of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. An analysis of this equation is presented for a wide range of possible shear profiles. The type of waves that occur is found to depend on the number and position of the inflection points of the representation of the shear profile in amplitude space. Up to three possible inflection points for this function are considered, resulting in solitary waves and kinks (dispersionless bores) which can have up to three characteristic lengthscales. The stability of these waves is generally found to decrease as the complexity of the waves increases. These solutions suggest that kinks and solitary waves with multiple lengthscales are only possible for shear profiles (in physical space) with a turning point, while instability is only possible if the shear profile has an inflection point. The unsteady evolution of a periodic initial condition is considered and again the solution is found to depend on the inflection points of the amplitude representation of the shear profile. Two characteristic types of solution occur, the first where the initial condition evolves into a train of rank-ordered solitary waves, analogous to those generated in the framework of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the second where two or more kinks connect regions of constant amplitude. The unsteady solutions demonstrate that finite-amplitude effects can act to halt the critical collapse of solitary waves which occurs in the context of the generalized Kortewegde Vries equation. The two types of solution are then used to quantitatively relate previously reported observations of shock formation on the internal tide propagating onto the Australian North West Shelf to the observed background current shear.

Description: This paper considers the propagation of shallow-water solitary and nonlinear periodic waves over a gradual slope with bottom friction in the framework of a variable-coefficient Korteweg-de Vries equation. We use the Whitham averaging method, using a recent development of this theory for perturbed integrable equations. This general approach enables us not only to improve known results on the adiabatic evolution of isolated solitary waves and periodic wave trains in the presence of variable topography and bottom friction, modelled by the Chezy law, but also, importantly, to study the effects of these factors on the propagation of undular bores, which are essentially unsteady in the system under consideration. In particular, it is shown that the combined action of variable topography and bottom friction generally imposes certain global restrictions on the undular bore propagation so that the evolution of the leading solitary wave can be substantially different from that of an isolated solitary wave with the same initial amplitude. This non-local effect is due to nonlinear wave interactions within the undular bore and can lead to an additional solitary wave amplitude growth, which cannot be predicted in the framework of the traditional adiabatic approach to the propagation of solitary waves in slowly varying media. © 2007 Cambridge University Press.

Description: It is generally accepted that ocean internal solitary waves can arise from the interaction of the barotropic tide with the continental shelf, which generates an internal tide that in turn steepens and forms solitary waves as it propagates shorewards. Some field observations, however, reveal large-amplitude internal solitary waves in deep water, hundreds of kilometres away from the continental shelf, suggesting an alternative generation mechanism: tidal flow over steep topography forces a propagating beam of internal tidal wave energy which impacts the thermocline at a considerable distance from the forcing site and gives rise to internal solitary waves there. Motivated by this possibility, a simple nonlinear long-wave model is proposed for the interaction of a tidal wave beam with the thermocline and the ensuing local generation of solitary waves. The thermocline is modelled as a density jump across the interface of a shallow homogeneous fluid layer on top of a deep uniformly stratified fluid, and a finite-amplitude propagating internal wave beam of tidal frequency in the lower fluid is assumed to be incident and reflected at the interface. The induced weakly nonlinear long-wave disturbance on the interface is governed in the far field by an integral-differential equation which accounts for nonlinear and dispersive effects as well as energy loss owing to radiation into the lower fluid. Depending on the strength of the thermocline and the intensity of the incident beam, nonlinear wave steepening can overcome radiation damping so a series of solitary waves may arise in the thermocline. Sample numerical solutions of the governing evolution equation suggest that this mechanism is quite robust for typical oceanic conditions. © 2007 Cambridge University Press.

Description: We consider shallow-water flow past a broad bottom ridge, localized in the flow direction, using the framework of the forced SuGardner (SG) system of equations, with a primary focus on the transcritical regime when the Froude number of the oncoming flow is close to unity. These equations are an asymptotic long-wave approximation of the full Euler system, obtained without a simultaneous expansion in the wave amplitude, and hence are expected to be superior to the usual weakly nonlinear Boussinesq-type models in reproducing the quantitative features of fully nonlinear shallow-water flows. A combination of the local transcritical hydraulic solution over the localized topography, which produces upstream and downstream hydraulic jumps, and unsteady undular bore solutions describing the resolution of these hydraulic jumps, is used to describe various flow regimes depending on the combination of the topography height and the Froude number. We take advantage of the recently developed modulation theory of SG undular bores to derive the main parameters of transcritical fully nonlinear shallow-water flow, such as the leading solitary wave amplitudes for the upstream and downstream undular bores, the speeds of the undular bores edges and the drag force. Our results confirm that most of the features of the previously developed description in the framework of the unidirectional forced Kortewegde Vries (KdV) model hold up qualitatively for finite amplitude waves, while the quantitative description can be obtained in the framework of the bidirectional forced SG system. Our analytic solutions agree with numerical simulations of the forced SG equations within the range of applicability of these equations. © 2009 Cambridge University Press.

Description: Integral constraints are derived for steady recirculating flows of nearly incompressible fluids, arising from the action of a small amount of viscosity and heat conduction. These constraints are then combined with the inviscid nondiffusive incompressible flow equations to show that two-dimensional flows containing closed nested streamlines, or three-dimensional flows with closed nested stream surfaces, are isothermal. In the former case it is shown that the vorticity is constant, and in the latter case there is an analogous result when the flow is axially symmetric and confined to axial planes. For a circular cell free convection problem, the interior temperature and vorticity are determined from the boundary conditions by an approximate integration of the boundary layer equations.

Description: Using a two-layer fluid model, equations are developed which describe long internal waves propagating along a channel of arbitrary cross-section. Expressions for the phase speed of these waves are derived in terms of geometric properties of the cross-section. When weakly nonlinear effects are balanced by weak dispersion, a Korteweg-de Vries equation is derived to describe the waves. The effects of a slowly varying cross-section are included. Applications of the theory are made to recent observations of internal surges in lakes. © 1978, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

Description: Two branches of gravity-capillary solitary water waves are known to bifurcate from a train of infinitesimal periodic waves at the minimum value of the phase speed. In general, these solitary waves feature oscillatory tails with exponentially decaying amplitude and, in the small-amplitude limit, they may be interpreted as envelope-soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation such that the envelope travels at the same speed as the carrier oscillations. On water of infinite depth, however, based on the fourth-order envelope equation derived by Hogan (1985), it is shown that the profile of these gravity-capillary solitary waves actually decays algebraically (like 1/x2) at infinity owing to the induced mean flow that is not accounted for in the NLS equation. The algebraic decay of the solitary-wave tails in deep water is confirmed by numerical computations based on the full water-wave equations. Moreover, the same behaviour is found at the tails of solitary-wave solutions of the model equation proposed by Benjamin (1992) for interfacial waves in a two-fluid system.

Description: The propagation of weakly nonlinear, long internal wave fronts in a contraction is considered in the transcritical limit as a model for the establishment of virtual controls. It is argued that the appropriate equation to describe this process is a variable coefficient Korteweg-de Vries equation. The solutions of this equation are then considered for compressive and rarefaction fronts. Rarefaction fronts exhibit both normal and virtual control solutions. However, the interaction of compressive fronts with contractions is intrinsically unsteady. Here the dynamics take two forms, interactions with the bulk of the front and interactions with individual solitary waves separating off from a front trapped downstream of the contraction.
