    Notes: CO adsorption on Ni{110} and on hydrogen precovered Ni{110} surfaces at 180 K has been studied by FT-RAIRS. On a clean Ni{110} surface CO adsorbs at on-top sites upto a coverage of 0.7 ML. At higher coverages the on-top CO band at 2060 cm−1 decreases in intensity with a concomitant increase in a band at 1960 cm−1 which shifts up in frequency. The (2×1)p2mg structure at 1.0 ML CO coverage shows a single band at 1998 cm−1 attributed to CO tilted at bridged sites. FT-RAIRS of CO adsorption on H precovered Ni{110} surfaces shows complex CO site switching within different CO and H coverage regimes. A model is presented involving compression of H into islands of high coverage and both mixed H and CO and unmixed CO islands are formed. CO adsorbs in the unmixed CO islands the same as that on clean Ni{110}. Within the mixed H/CO islands the first layer nickel atoms reconstruct and a new hydrogen desorption state is observed. The CO site switching observed by FT-RAIRS within the various H and CO coverage regimes is discussed in terms of a dominant indirect interaction.

    Notes: This letter demonstrates the patterning of thin films of metallic palladium by microcontact printing (μCP) of octadecanethiol, and the use of the patterned films in the fabrication of a functional sensor. This technique was also used to prepare templates of palladium for the electroless deposition of copper. The resistivity of the palladium and copper microstructures was 13.8 and 2.8 μΩ cm, respectively; these values are approximately 40% larger than the values for the pure bulk metals. Palladium patterned into serpentine wires using μCP functioned as a hydrogen sensor with sensitivity of 0.03 vol % H2 in N2, and a response time of ∼10 s (at room temperature). © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: Fine-grained lacustrine, riverine and ash-fall sediments of the Shooting Iron Formation, whose late Pliocene age is established by Blancan gastropods and vertebrates, yield a pollen flora that is essentially similar in composition to the modern pollen rain in the Jackson Hole area. The Pliocene assemblage suggests a climate like that of the Jackson valley and foothills today. These spectra also resemble a Pliocene pollen flora from Yellowstone Park dated at ∼ 2.02 Ma. However, the underlying Miocene Teewinot sediments differ by containing pollen of four exotic deciduous hardwoods (Tertiary relicts) that suggest a summer–moist climate, unlike that of today. The Shooting Iron sediments lie with an angular unconformity on and above the Miocene lake sediments of the Teewinot Formation. Both of these deposits probably preceded the main uplift of the Teton Range based on the absence of Precambrian clasts in the Tertiary valley deposits. Because the Pliocene floras were modern in aspect, a Plio-Pleistocene transition would be floristically imperceptible here. The sequence denotes a protracted period of relative stability of climate during Teewinot time, and a shift in vegetational state (summer–wet trees drop out) sometime between the latest Miocene and latest Pliocene. The Pliocene spectra suggest a dry, cooler climate toward the end of Shooting Iron time.

    Description: The practice of supplementary feeding of concentrates has been the subject of much investigation and also the centre of considerable controversy during the last decade. The latter is perhaps not hard to explain as so many variables are present; first and foremost there is the cow which at all times must be considered an individual whether it be milk yield, time of calving or dry-matter intake. In addition, one must always take into account the quantity and quality of grass, both of which are dependent on sward management and the system of grazing.
