Beschreibung: It has long been recognised that the amount of ammonia in soils cannot be determined by distillation with a solution of caustic soda or potash since these strong alkalis slowly decompose the complex nitrogenous matter and evolve a coutinuous stream of ammonia. Boussingault showed more than fifty years ago how this difficulty could be obviated. By using magnesia in place of soda or potash the decomposition of such substances as urea, asparagin, and albumin was not great even on long boiling, but when the distillation was carried out under reduced pressure at 38°—40° there was no decomposition at all. Ammonium salts, on the other hand, were completely broken up in these circumstances. He used this low pressure method in his researches on the ammonia content of urine, but does not appear to have applied it to soils. Sufficiently accurate results could, he considered, be obtained by distillation at 100°, and this method was for many years generally adopted. It gave results varying according to the nature of the soil from 10 to 100 parts of nitrogen per million (·001 to ·01 per cent.), which may still be found quoted in some of the agricultural text books.

Beschreibung: Gilbert White devotes one of his letters to earthworms. “Worms,” he says “ seem to be the great promoters of vegetation, which would “ proceed but lamely without them, by boring, perforating, and loosen-“ing the soil, and rendering it pervious to rains and the fibres of plants, “by drawing straws and stalks of leaves and twigs into it; and, most of “ all, by throwing up such infinite numbers of lumps of earth called “ worm-casts, which, being their excrement, is a fine manure for grain “and grass… the earth without worms would soon become cold, hard-“ bound, and void of fermentation, and consequently sterile.” Sixty years later, in 1837, Darwin published a paper, in which he showed the important part played by worms in the formation of vegetable mould. Further observations were recorded by Hensen in 1877. Agricultural chemists did not, however, generally make use of any of this work, and it was not till 1881 that the publication of Darwin's Earthworms and Vegetable Mould directed so much attention to the subject that the action of earthworms could no longer be disregarded. Several investigations have since been made into the part played by earthworms in promoting fertility, perhaps the best known being those recorded in Wollny's Zersetzung der organischen Stoffe.

Beschreibung: The conclusions reached in our previous paper have been confirmed and extended. Fresh evidence is adduced that bacteria are not the only inhabitants of the soil, but that another group of organisms occurs, detrimental to bacteria, multiplying more slowly under soil couditions and possessing lower power of resistance to heat and to antiseptics. In consequence of the presence of these detrimental organisms the number of bacteria present in the soil at any time is not a simple function of the temperature, moisture content and other conditions of the soil. It may, indeed, show no sort of connection with them; thus rise of temperature is found to be ineffective in increasing the bacteria in the soil; increase in moisture content has also proved without action. The number of bacteria depends on the difference in activity of the bacteria and the detrimental organisms.

Beschreibung: Bastard Trenching as ordinarily performed consists of two distinct operations; loosening the lower spit of soil, and digging into it farmyard manure or other fertilising material. A considerable volume of data has been accumulated to show the effect of the addition of farmyard manure to soil, but little is known of the effect of loosening the bottom spit, either on the soil or on the plant.

Beschreibung: During the past few years we have grown a large number of plants in partially sterilised soils alongside of others in untreated soils, in order to compare the total weights of dry matter produced. While the experiments were in progress certain qualitative differences in growth and habits of the plants revealed themselves; we propose in this paper to record these differences and to set out certain of the hypotheses that have been put forward to account for them. It was soon found that several distinct problems in plant physiology were concerned, and that any attempt to test the hypotheses experimentally would involve us in a number of side issues and lead us away from our main purpose. We therefore for the present confine ourselves to a statement of the facts observed, leaving their more complete elucidation for later work.

Beschreibung: The study of the fluctuations in the amounts of nitrate present in arable soils is important both from the practical and the scientific points of view. The nitrate supply in the soil is very commonly a limiting factor in crop production in Great Britain, so that any process which increases the nitrate supply tends to increase productiveness, and vice versa. From the scientific point of view the interest is even wider. No soil constituent, not even the moisture, shows such great fluctuations as the nitrates, and none is so susceptible to external influences. Further, the nitrate represents the end point in one chain of decompositions and the amount formed over a given period is therefore a measure of the extent to which this particular decomposition has proceeded.

Beschreibung: The coast of Kent and Sussex is to a great extent bordered by flat areas of alluvial land, elevated but little if at all above high water mark, known as the Marshes. Though certain portions are under the plough this land as a rule lies in permanent grass and affords some of the best grazing known in the south of England. The largest of these areas is Romney Marsh which with the adjoining Walland and Denge marshes forms a single area extending about 20 miles from east to west, and 10 miles or so broad. All the marshes possess very similar characteristics and the description which follows of Romney Marsh may be taken to apply, with certain local differences, to the others. The whole of the land has been reclaimed from the sea comparatively recently.

Beschreibung: In undertaking a survey of the soils of a given district the methods of analysis and the classification to be adopted (which in its turn shapes the scheme of the work) must be determined by the purpose before the investigator at the outset. His end may be scientific–to assign the soils in question to their types, or practical–to give information to the cultivator by showing him the area over which a given method of treatment may be expected to succeed. Much will depend upon the extent of the area under investigation and on the character of the climate prevailing.

Beschreibung: Previous investigations in this laboratory have shown that partial sterilisation of soil leads to increased productiveness. In attempting to apply this method on the large scale two courses were open. The more obvious was to seek for methods cheap enough for use in the field, and then to conduct a number of field trials to determine which was the best; this was almost certain to prove a tedious and expensive business and would not necessarily lead to a successful issue. The alternative plan, and the one we adopted, was to find classes of growers who could afford to use our present methods of partial sterilisation and who would be willing to do so. However restricted their number of crops might be we knew that the cost of the process must fall once it was applied in commercial growing, so that the range over which it was applicable would soon begin to widen; a further advantage was that from the outset we should be gaining experience of the working of partial sterilisation in practice. Fortunately we met with a large tomato and cucumber grower in the Waltham Cross district who put us in touch with the class of growers we wanted: in this way we came across the problem of sickness in glasshouse soils which forms the subject of the present communication.
