    Notes: The history of the relationship of studio teaching to research since the Oxford Conference has been one of babies thrown out with bathwater. Nearly 40 years on the need for research to underpin and invigorate the acts of designing is ever more keenly felt. This paper starts from a belief that the fruitful linkage of the two requires new approaches to both – that the past 40 years shows that it does not happen automatically. Designing is considered as a series of tangible acts where the nature of each operation affects not just the outcome of the project but also the intention of the designer. This puts a renewed emphasis on the means and tools of designing, on the need for operative theories which avoid reductivism and to explore the difficulty of transforming an intention into an architectural hypothesis.

    Description: The use of the mild-slope approximation, which is invoked to simplify the problem of linear water wave diffraction—refraction by bed undulations, is reassessed by using a variational method. It is found that smooth approximations to the free surface elevation obtained by using the long-standing mild-slope equation are not consistent with the continuity of mass flow at locations where the bed slope is discontinuous. The use of interfacial jump conditions at such locations significantly improves the accuracy of approximations generated by the mild-slope equation and by the recently derived modified mild-slope equation. The variational principle is also used to produce a generalization of these equations and of the associated jump condition. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the main points of the theory. © 1995, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

    Description: Aspects of the solution to the linearized water-wave problem involving a pair of surface-piercing cylinders in oblique waves and infinite water depth are examined. In particular, the solution is proved to be unique for certain geometrical arrangements and wave parameters depending on whether the wave frequency is above or below the cut-off frequency. Outside these regions of uniqueness are constructed examples of non-uniqueness using ideas developed in McIver (1996) in the normal incidence case. Although non-uniqueness examples are obtained numerically, we are able to prove the existence of non-uniqueness under the assumption that the wave obliqueness is small.

    Description: The trapping of linear water waves over two-dimensional topography is investigated by using the mild-slope approximation. Two types of bed profile are considered: a local irregularity in a horizontal bed and a shelf joining two horizontal bed sections at different depths. A number of results are derived concerning the existence of trapped modes and their multiplicity. It is found, for example, that the maximum number of modes which can exist depends only on the gross properties of the topography and not on its precise shape. A range of problems is solved numerically, to inform and illustrate the analysis, using both the mild-slope equation and the recently derived modified mild-slope equation.

    Description: A modified version of the mild-slope equation is derived and its predictions of wave scattering by two-dimensional topography compared with those of other equations and with experimental data. In particular, the modified mild-slope equation is shown to be capable of describing known scattering properties of singly and doubly periodic ripple beds, for which the mild-slope equation fails. The new equation compares favourably with other models of scattering which improve on the mild-slope equation, in that it is widely applicable and computationally cheap. © 1995, Cambridge University Press.     Description: The trapped modes which can occur in a long narrow wave channel containing any number of different-sized bottom-mounted circular cylinders arbitrarily spaced along the centreline of the channel are considered. The modes, all of which are antisymmetric with respect to the centreplane of the channel are of two types: Neumann modes, in which the fluid has normal velocity zero on the channel walls corresponding to a localized sloshing near the cylinders, and Dirichlet modes, in which the dynamic pressure vanishes on the channel walls. These latter modes have no physical meaning in the water-wave context but have been observed in a related acoustic context where the same governing equations and boundary conditions apply. It is shown that in general there are ≤ N trapped modes for any configuration of N cylinders, the precise number depending critically on the geometry of the configuration. Both types are of importance in predicting the exciting forces on individual cylinders within a large but finite periodic arrangement of cylinders.

    Description: Scattering of waves by vertical barriers in infinite-depth water has received much attention due to the ability to solve many of these problems exactly. However, the same problems in finite depth require the use of approximation methods. In this paper we present an accurate method of solving these problems based on a Galerkin approximation We will show how highly accurate complementary bounds can be computed with relative ease for many scattering problems involving vertical barriers in finite depth and also for a sloshing problem involving a vertical barrier in a rectangular tank. © 1995, Cambridge University Press.     Description: The scattering of plane surface water waves by both surface-piercing and submerged axisymmetric bed formations has been investigated by a number of authors. We extend previous contributions in two ways: we employ the recently derived modified mild-slope equation to approximate the fluid motion and we consider arbitrary axisymmetric topography, subject only to the restriction imposed by the mild-slope approximation. We thereby derive a robust method for calculating the scattered wave field for the small seabed slopes typical of most real situations and make a contribution to the phenomena of near-resonance and near-trapping over submerged axisymmetric shoals, which have previously been detected for only one idealized bedform.
