Notizen: Commercial scale production of a Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet has been successfully developed. Presently manufactured sheets are in coil form, whose thickness ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 mm with a maximum width of 400 mm. Magnetic properties of the manufactured sheet have been investigated. The permeability of Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet is about 10 times higher than the conventional nonoriented silicon steel sheet. The core losses are less than half the conventional, and even less than that of the grain-oriented silicon steel sheet at frequencies over 400 Hz. Superior soft magnetic properties are attributed to the low magnetostriction and high electric resistivity of this alloy. It is well known that the Fe-6.5 wt. % Si alloy has poor ductility in conventional mechanical work. But investigation of the forming conditions has enabled the stamping and bending of alloy sheets. Low core losses and high permeability make Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet adequate for motor cores, transformer cores operating at high frequencies, and magnetic shielding. Application to the micromotor core shows that Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet reduces the consumption of no-load electric current by 25% in comparison with the conventional silicon steel.

Notizen: This paper describes a two c-core type orthogonal-core made of Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet and its application to power converters. The orthogonal-core can be used in the high-frequency region because a Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet has superior soft magnetic properties including high permeability and low core loss. Using the orthogonal-core, we constructed a parametric oscillation type dc-ac converter. The dc-ac converter had voltage regulation, overload protection, noise rejection, and almost sinusoidal output. Good efficiency was obtained in the frequency range from 400 Hz to 1 kHz. Furthermore, we propose a dc-dc converter for coupling two independent dc power sources. The dc-dc coupling converter has bilateral power transfer and ease of controlling the transferred power. The basic operation of the dc-dc coupling converter is described.

Notizen: The electronic states of a range of Fe-Si alloys were investigated by x-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Previous work has shown that in Fe-Si alloys, the 6.5-wt % Si-Fe alloy has the optimum soft magnetic properties because of its zero magnetostriction. The binding energy (BE) of the Fe 2p, Fe 3s, Fe 3p, and Si 2p levels and the Fe 3d valence-band structures of Fe-Si alloys were measured over the range from 0 to 7 wt % Si. The BE of the Fe 3s and Fe 3p levels and the Fe 3d valence band of Fe-Si alloys showed small shifts of the peaks toward higher BEs than pure Fe. These peak shifts are related to the change in density of Fe 3d states with the addition of Si: the decrease in the density of states near the Fermi energy, the decrease in the energy difference between the majority and minority spin bands, and the increase in the number of electrons with minority spin. The results of the photoelectron spectroscopic analyses agree with the observed decrease in saturation magnetization from 2.15 T for pure Fe to 1.80 T for 6.5-wt % Si-Fe.

Notizen: A large-diameter uniform plasma is produced by electron cyclotron resonance heating with a slotted Lisitano coil of 9 cm in diameter by locating the resonance apart from the Lisitano coil. Although the plasma production with a Lisitano coil has been performed extensively by placing the resonance near the Lisitano coil, the influence of the resonance location has not received as much attention. When the resonance is located further than 8 cm from the Lisitano coil, the uniform plasma of ∼40 cm in diameter at densities of ∼1.2×1011 cm−3 is produced over the vacuum chamber with an inner radius of 46 cm. The microwave is propagated in the whole space between the resonance and the Lisitano coil, and spatial electric-field distributions of the microwave play an important role on forming the radially uniform plasma.

Notizen: 6.5% Si steel is widely known as an excellent soft magnetic material because its magnetostriction is nearly zero. The ac magnetic properties and magnetostriction of 6.5% Si steel sheet were evaluated and compared with those of conventional 3% Si steel sheet. From these data, this sheet is considered to be one of the best core materials available for audio frequency transformers. Toroidal and laminated-type transformers were made from both 6.5% steel sheet and grain-oriented Si steel sheet and the iron losses and noise were investigated. The results indicate that it is possible to operate at high induction, which suggests that this size of a transformer can be reduced by using 6.5% Si steel sheet.

Notizen: Soybean (Glycine max) cv. Harosoy 63 is resistant to race 1 and susceptible to race 9 of Phytophthora megasperma f. sp. glycinea (Pmg). In detached primary leaves inoculated with zoospores, growth of race 1 was completely suppressed 16 h after inoculation, while race 9 was unaffected. The amount of the phytoalexin glyceollin that accumulated, however, was not significantly different in either the incompatible or compatible interaction 16 h after inoculation. At the circumference of the inoculated area, a slight accumulation of phytoalexin was observed only in the incompatible interaction 20 h or more after inoculation. Tolerance of race 9 to the phytoalexin was significantly higher than that of race 1 when the phytoalexin was added to agar. Moreover, race 9 degraded glyceollin faster than race 1. On leaves inoculated at separate points with either race, the lesion associated with race 9 never colonized areas inoculated with race 1. These results suggest that factor(s) other than the accumulation of phytoalexin in soybean tissue might cause cessation of growth of Pmg.

Beschreibung: Fast azimuthal auroral expansion and poleward expansion are characteristic features of the expansion phase of substorms. In the first study of its kind, we have investigated the azimuthal auroral expansion and its magnetospheric counterpart using data from Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) all-sky imagers and multiple spacecraft. During the tail season in 2008–2009, we found 16 events of azimuthally expanding aurora that passed near the magnetic footprints of the multiple spacecraft operating in the near-Earth plasma sheet. In the magnetosphere, these events commonly showed fast azimuthal and earthward flows associated with intense electric fields and magnetic dipolarization. The speed of the propagating structure, which was estimated from the time difference of the depolarization observed by the multiple spacecraft, was close to the measured azimuthal plasma flow velocity. We also found that this azimuthal plasma transport was dominated by the E × B drift speed associated with the enhanced electric field. In a statistical analysis, the averaged speeds of the leading edge of the westward and eastward auroral expansion were 8.8 and 5.3 km/s, respectively. When mapped onto the equatorial magnetosphere, these speeds (267 and 162 km/s) were comparable to the averaged azimuthal plasma (E × B) flow speeds observed by the spacecraft, which were 193 (239) km/s in the westward direction and 112 (139) km/s in the eastward direction. Our events showed that E × B flows and auroral expansion predominantly propagated westward, indicating an effect of westward background convection in the Harang flow shear. From these results, we concluded that the azimuthal auroral expansion was closely related to magnetic dipolarization which expanded azimuthally at the E × B drift speed. On the basis of the abrupt formation of the fast E × B flows and their propagation away from the onset location, we suggest that the effects of the intense large-scale electric fields, which are possibly generated through substorm onset turbulence, propagate to the ionosphere along the magnetic field lines and lead to azimuthal expansion of an auroral arc.

Beschreibung: The neutron profile monitor stably operated at a high-count-rate for deuterium operations in the Large Helical Device has been developed to enhance the research on the fast-ion confinement. It is composed of a multichannel collimator, scintillation-detectors, and a field programmable gate array circuit. The entire neutron detector system was tested using an accelerator-based neutron generator. This system stably acquires the pulse data without any data loss at high-count-rate conditions up to 8 × 10 5 counts per second.

Beschreibung: Abstract Molecular ions in the magnetosphere can be a tracer of fast ion outflows from the deep ionosphere. Statistical properties of molecular ions (O2+/NO+/N2+) in the ring current are investigated based on ion composition measurements (〈180 keV/q) by MEPi and LEPi instruments onboard the Arase (ERG) satellite. The investigated period from late March to December 2017 includes 11 geomagnetic storms with the minimum Dst index less than ‐40 nT. The molecular ions are observed in the region of L=2.5‐6.6 and clearly identified at energies above ~12 keV during most magnetic storms. During quiet times, molecular ions are not observed. The average energy density ratio of the molecular ions to O+ is ~3 percent. The ratio tends to increase with the size of magnetic storms. Existence of molecular ions even during small magnetic storms suggests that the fast ion outflow from the deep ionosphere occurs frequently during geomagnetically active periods.
