Notes: The expression of antigenic determinants, Rg/Ch/WH, on Japanese C4 allotypes has been studied. Although the Japanese C4 allotype frequencies are known to differ from Europeans, the antigenic expression of their C4 allotypes correlates with associations described previously. All 89 random donors and 17 selected donors were Rg:1,2 so neither Rg:1,−2 nor Rg:−1,−2 was found. The frequency of Ch: 1,−2,3 was elevated while that of Ch: 1,2,3 was reduced, which was seen as a direct result of the higher frequency of B2 and B5 allotypes. None of the Japanese were Ch: 1,2,−3, but this can be accounted for by the absence of the A*6,B*1 haplotype. The WH determinant, which has been associated completely with Rg:1,−2 in Caucasians, was found at a higher frequency, 32%, in association with an A*3,2,B*QO haplotype expressing Rg:1,2, which has not been described previously. Detailed investigation showed that the A3 allotype was Rg:1,2 whereas the A2 allotype only expressed Rg1 (Rg:1,−2 WH+).

Notes: : Whiskeys with maturation periods of 1 to 26 y were analyzed by polyelectrolyte titration at various pH levels. The amounts of charge (polyelectrolyte concentration), which were mainly attributable to polyphenols which were extracted from wood casks during the maturation, were determined. The amounts of charge, namely polyphenols, increased with increasing periods of maturation. On the other hand, the ratio of amounts of charge in the alkaline region compared to those in the neutral region became smaller with longer storage. It was found that polyphenols were extracted over time from the wood cask by whiskey, but they were oxidized to alter the polyphenol compositions, which stabilized clusters (molecular association) between alcohol and water to make whiskeys mellow.

Notes: The central Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) of New Zealand is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism, active since 1.6 Ma. We report palaeomagnetic measurements from 59 distinct volcanic units sampled at 98 sites in the TVZ. These are mainly rhyolitic ignimbrites and lava domes, with a few basaltic, andesitic, and dacitic lavas. Most have new K/Ar or 40Ar/39 Ar ages. The remanent magnetizations are generally stable to both thermal and alternating-field demagnetization, and well-determined mean palaeodirections were obtained for all sites. Our findings suggest that the Taupo, Whakamaru, Maroa, Reporoa, Rotorua, and Okataina volcanic centres were magnetized during the Brunhes normal chron. Kapenga is an older volcanic centre, where activity commenced around 0.89 Ma and extended into the Brunhes. Mangakino volcanic centre is significantly older and was active from 1.6 to 0.95 Ma.Transitional or intermediate palaeodirections were obtained from Ahuroa ignimbrite (1.18 ± 0.02 Ma) and Mamaku ignimbrite (0.22 ± 0.01 Ma). The former almost certainly corresponds to the Cobb Mountain Event. The latter is significantly older than the Blake Event, and probably corresponds to the recently reported Pringle Falls/Summer Lake magnetic episode.Multiple sites from the Whakamaru ignimbrite have indistinguishable 40Ar/39 Ar ages (0.33 ± 0.01 Ma) and glass composition, but divergent palaeomagnetic directions. This contrast suggests that either (1) the different sites were formed during a phase of extremely violent activity, lasting up to a few hundred years, during which geomagnetic secular variation was recorded; or (2) that they were formed in a single eruption, and rotation during subsequent extensional tectonism has caused divergence of the palaeodirections. 40Ar/39Ar ages of 0.77 ± 0.03 Ma for the reversely magnetized Rahopeka ignimbrite and 0.71 ± 0.06 Ma for the overlying normally magnetized Waiotapu ignimbrite bracket and constrain the age of the Maluyama-Brunhes transition.

Notes: The seed storage proteins of wheat flour are the determinants of bread-making quality. Many cultivars having good bread-making quality carry the Glu-D1d allele responsible for the development of glutenin, a major seed storage protein. The Glu-D1d allele was introduced into four leading Japanese wheat cultivars by recurrent backcrossing and the quality of these near-isogenic lines (NILs) was evaluated by the sodium dodecyl sulphate sedimentation value of their flour. The values for the NILs were significantly higher than for the corresponding recipient cultivars. However, the values did not reach the level of the cultivar that had been used as the donor of the Glu-D1d allele.

Notes: Automated knowledge acquisition is an important research issue in machine learning. Several methods of inductive learning, such as ID3 family and AQ family, have been applied to discover meaningful knowledge from large databases and their usefulness is assured in several aspects. However, since their methods are of a deterministic nature and the reliability of acquired knowledge is not evaluated statistically, these methods are ineffective when applied to domains essentially probabilistic in nature, such as medical domains. Extending concepts of rough set theory to a probabilistic domain, we introduce a new approach to knowledge acquisition, which induces probabilistic rules based on rough set theory (PRIMEROSE) and develop a program that extracts rules for an expert system from a clinical database, using this method. The results show that the derived rules almost correspond to those of the medical experts.
