Notes: It is shown that the L2 norm of electric currents induced in a dissipative medium can never exceed the norm of the external currents. This allows the construction of a simple iteration method to solve the Maxwell's equations. The method produces a series converging to the solution for an arbitrary conductivity distribution and arbitrary frequency of field variations. The convergence is slow if the lateral contrast of the conductivity distribution is about 104 or higher. A modification significantly improving the convergence is described in this paper. As an example, electromagnetic fields induced in the model (including the western part of the Northern American continent and the adjacent part of the Pacific Ocean) are calculated.

Notes: This paper presents the results of interpretation of magnetotelluric and magnetovariational observations in a vast region, including the southern part of the Turanian plate and the South Caspian megadepression. Both 1-D and 2-D interpretations fail to explain the main peculiarities of the natural magnetotelluric and magnetovariational fields observed in the region. The 3-D interpretation used in the paper is based on thin-sheet modelling and inversion algorithms developed by the authors. The final model consists of an inhomogeneous surface layer and a conductive layer, embedded in the otherwise laterally uniform medium in the crust under the Kopet-Dagh mountains. The surface layer conductance varies between 100 S and 13 000 S, and the crustal anomaly has a conductance of about 2500 S. The layered regional structure includes a conductive layer at a depth of 80–100 km, whose conductance is about 1800 S. The model explains all of the main features of the observed magnetotelluric and magnetovariational fields in the region.

Notes: This paper presents basic principles of the iterative-dissipative method and main points of its numerical realization. A spherical earth model consisting of a thin non-uniform surface layer being in galvanic contact with an underlying stratified medium is considered. The current system induced by a uniform magnetic field in the model with a realistic distribution of surface conductance is calculated. It is shown that leakage currents are significant even for the earth model with a highly resistive crust and upper mantle.

Notes: The paper presents a method which can be used to calculate electromagnetic fields excited in non-uniform media by fields of either natural origin or controlled sources. the model under consideration consists of several inhomogeneous thin sheets embedded in an otherwise laterally uniform section. Maxwell's equations are reduced to a system of integral equations with a compressive kernel, which can always be effectively solved using the iterative-dissipative method. Some details of a numerical realization are given together with an example of modelling.

Notes: The vertical electric currents flowing between the inhomogeneous surface layer and the conductive layers of the Earth's mantle are substantially dependent upon the transverse resistivity of the Earth's crust and upper mantle. Although these currents do not contribute straightforwardly to a surface magnetic field, they change the vortex sub-surface currents which contribute to it. Thus, there exists an indirect influence of leakage currents upon the magnetic field. This makes it possible to evaluate resistance of the high-ohmic layers, which could not be evaluated if the Earth was laterally homogeneous and only the induction mode of the field was induced. This paper presents the first results of the bimodal sounding based on Sq-variation data. An estimate of the lithosphere's transverse resistance T∼ 3 × 109Ω m2 has been obtained.

Notes: : In this paper, a system approach to water resources development in Tehran Metropolitan Area, with its complex system of water supply and demands, is discussed. Water resources in this region include water storage in the Lar, Latyan, and Karaj reservoirs, the Tehran aquifer, as well as water discharge in local rivers and in drainage channels (mainly supplied by urban runoff and wastewater). This study consists of three phases of long-term water resources planning and management in the Tehran metropolitan area. In each phase, a different level of details among different components of the system is considered. In the first phase, optimal operating policies for Tehran reservoirs and a decision support system are developed. In the second phase, interactions between surface and ground water resources as well as surface runoffs and wastewater disposal in different subareas are investigated. The water table fluctuations as a result of implementing sewerage collection project was also simulated. In the last phase, long-term scenarios for water resources and agricultural development in the Southern part of Tehran are defined, and the effects of each scenario on the quality and quantity of surface and ground water resources are studied.
