Notes: The work of several authors (Adorno, Benjamin, Berger, Lukacs, and Sartre) who have Marxist-related approaches to literature is examined in order to present a review of the problems involved in the relationship between literature and everyday life. It is suggested that literature does not have to be “applied” or “realistic” to convey what is implicated in different literary forms and genres (novels, short stories, and poetry).

Notes: The rise of one day internationals has been influenced by spectator' desires for a shorter, more exciting version of the game with a mass appeal and by cricketing associations' recognition of the significant contribution it makes to their financial coffers. This article seeks to show how the diffusion of ODIs resembled that of an S curve with slow uptake by test-playing nations in the early 1970s to the present day, with all the test-playing nations and three non-playing nations participating in the World Cup. It then discusses how ODI was an ‘alpha’ innovation that has created the conditions for the development of many smaller or ‘beta’ innovations.

Notes: This paper studies the day-of-the-week effect employing Canadian stock returns from January 1, 1975 to June 30, 1989. The study finds that, as opposed to large capitalization stocks, low capitalization (thinly-traded) stocks tend to have a larger negative return on Tuesday rather than on Monday - possibly due to lags in the price adjustment of these stocks following the release of negative information. Two main issues are investigated in an attempt to explain the day-of-the-week effect and its persistence over time: (a) the role of dividends, and (b) the role of information flows. The study finds that firms are much more likely to go ex-dividend on Monday than on any other day of the week; however, after correcting for the dividend effect, Monday's returns are still significantly negative. With respect to information flows, we find evidence consistent with an information-flows-related explanation of the day-of-the-week effect, particularly with the idea that macro announcements cause negative Monday returns.

Notes: Dr Ray Robinson, of the University of Sussex, considers that the education voucher may be useful in, improving aspects of efficiency in the supply of education, but holds the proposals for its introduction to be untimely: the voucher has been presented as a measure to penalise bad teachers rather than as a stimulus to the good.

Notes: Government regulation in general has over-expanded. However, in British energy markets, a new form of regulation, concentrating on promoting competition in gas and electricity, has emerged to the benefit of consumers. If the government pursues its policy of targeting favoured energy activities, these gains will disappear, the costs of achieving environmental targets will be unnecessarily heavy and energy markets will be re-politicised.

Notes: The EU's leaders are not taking constitutional reform seriously. An analysis of the history of the development of federal states suggests that they are unlikely to do so until a crisis precipitates action. The current constitutional arrangements and those proposed by the constitutional convention are a recipe for continued integration. Paradoxically, a brief, well-drafted federal constitution might stop the process of integration.
