Notes:
A novel plasmid-mediated β-lactamase has been identified in a Klebsiella pneumoniae strain, carried by a plasmid pUK702. The pUK702 plasmid encodes TEM-1 and SHV-1 β-lactamase enzymes in addition to the novel enzyme. The novel enzyme has an Mr of 19 000 and a pI of 6.5. The enzyme is TEM-like in substrate profile and has been designated TLE-2 (TEM-like enzyme) on this basis. However, TLE-2 can be distinguished from TEM-1 and SHV-1 in inhibition tests and failure to cross-react in immunological tests.
