    Notes: SUMMARY The effect of preparation of several vegetables and fruits on the reduction in levels of deliberately applied strontium-89 and cesium-134 was evaluated in a 4-yr study. For many crop-preparation combinations, the usual processing conditions prior to preservation by freezing, dehydration, or canning resulted in the removal of 60–95% of the applied radioactivity. Spray rinsing of podded peas removes substantial radioactivity which would contaminate pea seeds during mechanical separation of pods and seeds. Spray rinsing does not remove much of the external strontium-89 on strawberries and even less of the internal radioactivity. Treatment of comminuted strawberries with CaCl2 solution followed by the addition of Na2CO3 produced a slightly salty juice of low radioactivity after centrifugation (to remove seeds and alkaline earch carbonates) and acidification with citric acid. The ascorbic acid content of the juice was reduced only slightly by these operations. Treatment of tomato puree enriched with cesium-134 with ion exchange resins resulted, after centrifugation, in serum fractions low in radioactivity. The radioactivity of internally contaminated tomatoes and potatoes can be reduced substantially by shaking particles of these commodities in aqueous suspensions containing ion exchange resins.

    Notes: SUMMARY— The storage of freshly harvested olives in systems other than the traditional sodium chloride brine was investigated in an attempt to provide an alternative storage system which would reduce the present saline pollution potential of the dive canning industry. Chemical salts used as fertilizers were partially successful in holding olives for several months without spoilage. Ammonium nitrate brines could be used for periods up lo 15 wk; however, it was difficult to remove the salt completely during preparation far canning. Brines containing ammonium sulfate (with the pH controlled by the addition of H2SO4) held olives for 6 mo. The difficulties in completely removing ammonium sulfate from the olives limited the commercial potential for this type of storage. Food grade glycols containing bacteriostats can be used to store olives for periods of over 6 mo. Olives submerged in propylene glycol-diethyl pyrocarbonate mixtures showed severe shriveling. The recovery from shriveling on subsequent preparation was satisfactory only for the smaller-sized olives. A similar result was obtained far olives stored in a mixture of glycerol-benzoic acid-sorbic acid. The most promising storage system developed in this study was a mixture of water-propylene glycol-benzoic acid-potassium sorbet-HCI. By using KOH in place of NaOH for the chemical curing preparation steps, it was possible to prepare canned olives with essentially no generation of liquid waste containing sodium ions.

    Notes: : The rate of return on invested capital can be used as a guide to resource allocation by municipal water departments (MWD's) in the same way it is used in the private sector. To achieve economic efficiency, the target rate of return for MWD's should be the market rate of return as an approximation to the opportunity cost of capital. The actual internal rate of return for a sample of 30 California MWD's for the period 1970-1982 is calculated for this study. The operating internal rate of return varies across the sample MWD's from less than 2 percent to 14 percent. If 10 percent is taken as the opportunity cost of capital, 25 of the 30 MWD's were inefficient; i.e., earned less than 10 percent. Half the sample earned less than 5 percent. An examination of potential causes of low rates of return shows that low average water prices are the primary reason for the low rates of return. For efficient operation, MWD's should set a target rate of return equal to the opportunity cost of capital and adjust water prices so as to achieve that target.

    Notes: : Four alternate schemes often used to deal with a water shortage are: physical rationing, lifeline with increasing block rates, rationing with resale, and pure price rationing. Each of these are analyzed using a supply-demand framework. The theoretical results are applied to a representative California water district and the welfare loss is calculated for a hypothetical 20 percent reduction in water supply for six different income classes. We find that reliance on schemes using the price mechanism in one form or another is clearly superior, in terms of welfare loss, as a means of dealing with a water shortage.

    Notes: : Volusia County, in east central Florida, comprises approximately 1,200 square miles situated between the St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the County is underlain by a three-aquifer system. Population centers in Volusia County, which create a large water demand, are located near the coast. Saltwater intrusion into the ground water near these population centers has led to relocation of public water supply wells further inland. Regional management of the county's water resources commissioned construction of a three-dimensional computer model of the county. Predevelopment simulation results were used as initial conditions for the development simulations, which included well discharge data. The predevelopment model calibration consisted of reproducing field-determined potentiometric surfaces. As part of the calibration process, sensitivity analyses were performed on boundary conditions, recharge rates, permeability, and leakage properties. Results of the model study indicate the utility of computer models as a management tool for the complex ground-water system in Volusia County.

    Notes: Abstract.— The European abalone Haliotis tuberculata, a valuable macroalgivore, was introduced and acclimated for culture in a land-based facility at Eilat, Israel, on the Red Sea (Gulf of Aqaba). Large quantities of high-protein seaweed (Ulva lactuca) are produced there in biofilters used in fish mariculture. Although high water temperatures (25–27 C) inhibited summer growth, and in spite of the high salinity (41 ± 1 ppt). four groups of abalone of different sizes grew more in 1 yr than reported in their natural habitat. This fast growth is attributed to the long period (8 mo, from fall to spring) in which temperatures in Eilat waters are within the optimal range for this species, and to the high protein content of the seaweed. Winter timing of maximal growth as well as reproduction in Eilat was reversed compared with Europe, where they occur in summer. Gametogenesis began in December, and the gonads in most broodstock were spent by May. Haliotis tuberculata appears to have excellent potential for intensive mariculture in Israel.
