    Notes: The performance of parametric models used to describe soil water retention (SWR) properties and predict unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (K) as a function of volumetric water content (θ) is examined using SWR and K(θ) data for coarse sand and gravel sediments. Six 70 cm long, 10 cm diameter cores of glacial outwash were instrumented at eight depths with porous cup ten-siometers and time domain reflectometry probes to measure soil water pressure head (h) and θ, respectively, for seven unsaturated and one saturated steady-state flow conditions. Forty-two θ(h) and K(θ) relationships were measured from the infiltration tests on the cores. Of the four SWR models compared in the analysis, the van Genuchten (1980) equation with parameters m and n restricted according to the Mualem (m = 1 - 1/n) criterion is best suited to describe the θ(h) relationships. The accuracy of two models that predict K(θ) using parameter values derived from the SWR models was also evaluated. The model developed by van Genuchten (1980) based on the theoretical expression of Mualem (1976) predicted K(θ) more accurately than the van Genuchten (1980) model based on the theory of Burdine (1953). A sensitivity analysis shows that more accurate predictions of K(θ) are achieved using SWR model parameters derived with residual water content (θr) specified according to independent measurements of θ at values of h where θ/h ∼ 0 rather than model-fit θr values. The accuracy of the model K(θ) function improves markedly when at least one value of unsaturated K is used to scale the K(θ) function predicted using the saturated K. The results of this investigation indicate that the hydraulic properties of coarse-grained sediments can be accurately described using the parametric models. In addition, data collection efforts should focus on measuring at least one value of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and as complete a set of SWR data as possible, particularly in the dry range.

    Notes: Specific capacity tests are useful for estimating transmissivity in aquifers that have few good-quality pump tests. In karst aquifers, this has been done by (1) correcting specific capacity for turbulent well loss and using analytical relationships between transmissivity and specific capacity, and (2) correcting specific capacity for well loss and deriving an empirical relationship between transmissivity and specific capacity. This study focuses on the uncertainties of estimating well loss and presents an empirical relationship between transmissivity and uncorrected specific capacity for a karst aquifer.Well loss is difficult to estimate without good-quality step-drawdown tests. Pipe-flow theory tends to underestimate well loss, and an empirical relationship between specific capacity and well-loss constant has a large prediction interval that leads to well loss exceeding measured drawdown. To overcome uncertainties of estimating well loss, transmissivity and uncorrected specific capacity were related for aquifer tests from the Edwards aquifer in Texas. The resulting best-fit line is T = 0.76(Sc)1.08 for T and Sc in m2 d–1 with a coefficient of determination, R2, of 0.89 and a 95-percent prediction interval spanning approximately 1.4 log cycles. Though the prediction interval is large, approximate but useful estimates of transmissivity can be determined because the relationship extends over five orders of magnitude from 1 to 100,000 m2 d-1. The relationship is applicable in at least one other karst aquifer and therefore may be useful for others.

    Notes: : Personal interviews were conducted with eighty campers in each of three Minnesota state parks to investigate the water quality perception of the recreationist. At the same time, water quality factors were measured or observed as an indication of conditions experienced by the interviewees. Most respondents perceived water pollution strictly on a visual basis. Sewage, public carelessness, industry, and farm fertilizers were “first choice selections” among major causes of water pollution in Minnesota. Seventy percent felt their recreational activities did not contribute to water pollution. Sixty-two percent said their life had not been affected by water pollution, while over two-thirds of the remaining thirty-eight percent listed curtailment of recreation as the primary result. Many mentioned an algal bloom at one park and the strong odor of rotten fish at a second park. On the basis of the senior author's observations, supported by the measurements taken, it was concluded that thèk were the only major problems in the three parks. Some incipient problems, such as nutrient enrichment and the presence of coliform bacteria, were indicated by the measurements. The type and degree of pollution identified by the recreationist could be important through its influence on user evaluations and space preferences. The establishment of relationships between water quality parameters and the perception of the recreationist will provide the manager with a tool to assist in evaluating participation in water-related outdoor recreation in terms of both user satisfaction and water quality.

    Notes: Multispectral recordings used for remote sensing are not without analogy with seismic records from CDP field set-ups. These seismic data may be regarded as “photographs’ of deep regions of the earth taken from various angles.The Karhunen-Loève (K.L.) transformation is commonly used for multispectral data processing, where it helps emphasize some features of remote sensing information. The same method may be applied to seismic data processing. Signal-to-noise ratio is improved on synthetic or field examples when K.L. transformation is applied instead of conventional CDP stacking. Residual statics seem to be diminished by a significant factor.

    Notes: The acoustical impedance distribution of the substratum, or equivalently, the reflection coefficient sequence, is determined from VSP data. This nonlinear inverse problem is solved by a least-squares method.As the wavelet is unknown, the impedance distribution and the Neumann boundary condition (which characterizes the excitation of the medium) are simultaneously identified.The inversion method is applied to synthetic and field VSP's; the result is satisfactory, even when strong noise corrupts the data, provided that a suitable constraint on the impedance distribution is introduced in order to ensure the stability of the inverse problem.The reliability of the inversion result in the case of field VSP, is confirmed. Some ways in which this result may be used are illustrated (calibration of the seismic surface data, multiple identification, prediction ahead of the bit).

    Notes: The formation of cholesterol synthesis inhibiting molecules by five different strains of the koji mold Aspergillus oryzae was studied. After growing these strains on a complex liquid medium we found in crude organic phase extracts and specific fractions there from compounds inhibiting cholesterol synthesis in human hepatic T9A4 cells in vitro at enzyme sites downstream of dihydrolanosterol. This was evidenced by using different radioactively labeled precursors, namely acetate, mevalonate, 24,25-dihydro-[24,25-3H2]-lanosterol or [3-3H]-lathosterol.
