As Lewis et al. reported in J. Fish Biol.26, 355–358 (1985) that the anaesthetic tricaine methanosulphate (MS 222) damaged the olfactory epithelium of channel catfish, two assays were used to determine whether MS 222 or 2-phenoxyethanol (an alternative anaesthetic) influenced subsequent olfaction-mediated behaviour. Tests revealed that the homing of adult chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, and the l-serine avoidance response of juvenile coho salmon, O. kisutch, were not altered by anaesthesia.
