Notes: The proximate composition and the water soluble vitamin and elemental composition of Red Delicious apples purchased from six marketing locations at marketing times near maximum and minimum product availability was determined. Ascorbic acid, niacin, vitamin B6, thiamin, folacin, Ca and Na were significantly (P 〈 0.01) higher in apples purchased in May (minimum availability) compared to those purchased in November (maximum availability). Values for ascorbic acid, vitamin B6, folacin, Ca and Fe were lower and Mg and Na were higher than tabulated values. The proximate composition and mean values for other micronutrients approximated those in Handbook 8.

Notes: Guinea keets, reared to 12 wk on a modified turkey starter and grower diet, were processed like broilers and thigh and breast meat samples analyzed. Proximate analysis for breast and thigh meat without skin was: dry matter 25.4 and 24.0%; protein 22.7 and 19.4%; hexane extractables 0.86 and 2.2%; and ash 1.06 and 1.05% respectively. Total cholesterol in breast meat was 40.6 mg/100g raw tissue, and 62.1 mg in the thigh. Also included were analyses for Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid and the fatty acid profiles of the meat and skin. Guinea meat was found to be lower in fat, sodium and cholesterol and higher in potassium, phosphorus, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B6 than broiler meat.

Notes: Rapeseed protein concentrate (RC), prepared with 2% hexameta-phosphate, was tested for its functionality and performance in some foods. The RC had good nitrogen solubility, fat absorption, emulsification, and whipping capacities but poor water absorption and gelling properties. It increased the emulsion stability, and protein but lowered the fat content of wieners. It also increased the cooking yield, reduced the shrinkage and tenderized meat patties. Results were similar to soybean isolate except for the poorer color and flavor. The cooking yield of RC supplemented wieners was less than the all-meat control and soybean-supplemented wieners. A 9% RC dispersion mixed with an equal volume of eggwhite produced a meringue of comparable stability and texture to that of eggwhite alone.

Notes: Rapeseed protein concentrate (RC) was prepared on a semi-pilot scale by a process involving 2% sodium hexametaphosphate. The nitrogen and total solids yields were 53 and 31%, respectively. The RC contained 77% protein, negligible amounts of glucosinolates, 14.2% ash, 3.4% phosphorous, and 1.26% phytic acid. The amino acid composition was similar to rapeseed flour. When fed to rats in diets at 5 and 10% protein levels, RC exhibited higher protein quality than the casein controls and no gross abnormalities were observed in all major organs. At the 20% dietary protein level, the difference in quality was not significant and rats fed RC had larger kidneys than those fed casein. This was attributed partly to the high phosphorous content of the diet. Mineral bioavailability was not affected by the phytic acid and phosphorous present in the RC.

Notes: The determination of aquifer transmissibility by the bail-test method can be considerably simplified if proper attention is paid to the regular spacing of bailer cycles. The transmissibility calculation will then depend on the evaluation of the difference between two numbers, instead of on the evaluation and summation of a large set of numbers, one number for each bailer cycle. The mathematical development on which this method is based is given briefly and a table listing the sums of the reciprocals of the natural numbers, which is used in the simplified determination, is also presented. The formula for the recovery of the water level after repeated bailing of a well completed in a confined aquifer (Skibitzke, 1958) may be written (Ferris et al., 1962):

Notes: : A methodology has been developed to predict the responses of a range of water supply sources in Wales to global warming scenarios. Hydrologically effective rainfall is predicted from temperature and precipitation for each season based on site specific formulae developed using the Meteorological Office Rainfall and Evaporation Calculation System (MORECS) and UK Surface Water Archive databases. Comparisons are then made between the effects predicted for the scenarios established from equilibrium simulations and the new Hadley Centre High Resolution Model (UKHI) transient mode results. Though very different, both suggest increased stress on water resources late in the hydrological year.

Notes: Mixed-sex blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus fry were produced from indoor spawns in March and April. Fry were stocked in May at an average weight of 0.5 g at 0, 250, 750, or 2,500/ha into ponds which had been stocked previously with three catfish strains at a combined density of 10,000 fingerlings/ha. After a 167-d culture period, from 15 May until 4 November, tilapia stocked at 250 or 750/ha grew to average harvest size approaching 0.45 kg. No significant difference in average size was observed between males and females except at the 2,500 tilapia/ha stocking density. Sixty percent of the tilapia polyculture ponds yielded no reproduction at harvest and maximum reproduction observed was 13.5 kg/ha. Lack of reproduction and the undeveloped state of sampled female ovaries indicated that most females had yet to attain sexual maturity. Catfish production and catfish feed conversion was not significantly different between tilapia polyculture and catfish monoculture ponds (P 〉 0.05). First seine hauls yielded over 88% of the total catfish harvest, but only an average of 3.9% of the marketable tilapia. Tilapia had no measurable impact on the incidence of catfish off-flavor at any of three sample intervals. Overall average levels of TAN and nitrites did not differ significantly between treatments; however, mean chlorophyll a concentration was significantly higher (P 〉 0.05) in the 2,500 tilapia/ha treatment than at lower tilapia densities.
