    Notes: Based on egg collection records, spontaneous spawning activity of sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch), reared in floating net cages followed a semilunar cycle. The peak of multiple spawnings coincided with declining spring tides of quarter moon periods. Maximum diameter of intra-ovarian, ripe oocytes (0.51–0.55 mm) occurred in synchrony with the quarter moon periods. Smaller oocytes (0.44–0.47 mm) were sampled during the new and full moon periods. Two structural analogues of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRHa) (des-Gly10, d-Ala6-LHRH ethylamide and d-Ala6, Pro9-Nethylamide-LHRH), in pelleted or dissolved form, induced mature female sea bass with a mean egg diameter of at least 0.40 mm to spawn at any day during the lunar cycle. The onset of spontaneous and LHRHa-induced spawnings occurred during low tides in the evening until dawn (from 19.00 to 05.00 hours). These results demonstrate that LHRHa can effectively induce mature sea bass to spawn independent of the highly predictable semilunar spawning rhythm. In addition, the occurrence of both spontaneous and hormone-induced spawnings at a precise period of the day suggest a tidal and diurnal cue entraining spawning of mature female sea bass.

    Notes: The effect of various doses of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa) ranging from 1 to 100 μg/kg body weight on the spawning response of mature female sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch) was tested. A single intramuscular injection of LHRHa resulted in a dose-related increase in the spawning rate (number of spawnings of each fish over four consecutive days) of mature fish. An LHRHa dose of 5 μg/kg and less induced low spawning rates of 16.7% to 37.5% or at least one spawning every four days. However, mature sea bass spawned more than once (43.8–58.3%) in four days at dose levels of 10 μg/kg and above. Hormone treatment within the dose range tested did not influence the number, fertilization and hatching rates of spawned eggs.The influence of initial oocyte size on the LHRHa-induced spawning response of mature sea bass was also examined. Sea bass with an initial oocyte diameter of 0.30–0.39 mm did not respond to the single injection of 100 μg LHRHa/kg. In contrast, LHRHa induced spawning among sea bass with an initial egg size of 0.40–0.49 mm, although two of four sea bass of the same stage of ovarian maturity spawned spontaneously. Fish having an initial oocyte size of 0.50–0.55 mm spawned with and without LHRHa treatment. Spontaneous spawning among saline-injected sea bass occurred at a later time (24–58 h post-injection) compared to fish induced to spawn by a single injection of LHRHa (8–36 h post-injection). The initial spawning response time interval for fish with an initial egg size of 0.50 mm or greater was further reduced to 8–9 h by LHRHa. These results indicate that LHRHa can successfully induce spawning in mature female sea bass which have attained a critical oocyte diameter and that the spawning response interval is reduced with a further increase in egg size beyond the critical oocyte diameter limit.

    Notes: An opercular tag for marking adult milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal) and seabass (Lates calcarifer Bloch) is described. High tag retention and relatively low mortality rates were observed in adult fish handled two to ten times during 14-to 60-day tests.     Notes: Mature female sea bass (Lates calcarifer Bloch) were injected once intramuscularly with 20 μg luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (D-Ala6, Pro9-LHRH-ethylamide) per kg body weight (BW) at different times of the day. Following hormone injection, the incidence of initial spawning and the number of eggs spawned by each fish were recorded. Saline-injected fish did not spawn. Fish spawned at dawn or 33.7–40 h after an LHRHa injection at either 11.00 h or 17.00 h. When LHRHa was administered at 23.00 h or 05.00 h, sea bass spawned during the day or at 38–47.3 h post-injection. Mean egg production levels of 26.8–34.4 × 104 per kg BW were higher for fish which spawned at dawn. Low mean egg production levels (6.2–19.9 × 104 eggs per kg BW) were observed when LHRHa-injected fish spawned during the day. Les taux moyen de production d'oeufs étaient bas (6.2–19.9 × 104les oeufs par kg de poids de poissons) quand les poissons injectés au LHRHa frayaient pendant la journée. Les résultats montrent que le moment initial du frai initial a varié avec l'heure du jour sà laquelle le LHRHa a été administré et que le nombre d'oeufs frayés est influencé par l'heure du jour sà laquelle les barramundis stimulé par l'hormone frayaient.

    Notes: The spawning induction activity of dissolved and pelleted (D-Ala6, Pro9 N ethylamide) luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa) stored for various periods was assessed in mature female sea bass. The spawning response of mature fish was reduced significantly after injection of dissolved LHRHa (20 μg kg−1) stored for more than 90 days in a refrigerator (4–10°C) or for more than 30 days at room temperature (28–30°C). Similar to fish administered fresh preparations of LHRHa, fish spawned successfully after injection of a solution of LHRHa previously frozen, subjected to alternate freezing and thawing, exposed to sunlight or implanted pelleted LHRHa (50 ng kg−1) stored at room temperature for 30–120 days. Loss of hormone bioactivity after prolonged storage may have been due to bacterial growth in solubilized preparations. Injection or implantation of stored LHRHa did not influence egg production among treated sea bass. These results demonstrated the relatively prolonged shelf life of stored LHRHa.

    Description: We present an improved procedure of generating initial conditions (ICs) for climate model hindcast experiments with specified sea surface temperature and sea ice. The motivation is to minimize errors in the ICs and lead to a better evaluation of atmospheric parameterizations' performance in the hindcast mode. We apply state variables (horizontal velocities, temperature and specific humidity) from the operational analysis/reanalysis for the atmospheric initial states. Without a data assimilation system, we apply a two-step process to obtain other necessary variables to initialize both the atmospheric (e.g., aerosols and clouds) and land models (e.g., soil moisture). First, we nudge only the model horizontal velocities towards operational analysis/reanalysis values, given a 6-hour relaxation time scale, to obtain all necessary variables. Compared to the original strategy in which horizontal velocities, temperature and specific humidity are nudged, the revised approach produces a better representation of initial aerosols and cloud fields which are more consistent and closer to observations and model's preferred climatology. Second, we obtain land ICs from an offline land model simulation forced with observed precipitation, winds, and surface fluxes. This approach produces more realistic soil moisture in the land ICs. With this refined procedure, the simulated precipitation, clouds, radiation, and surface air temperature over land are improved in the Day 2 mean hindcasts. Following this procedure, we propose a “Core” integration suite which provides an easily repeatable test allowing model developers to rapidly assess the impacts of various parameterization changes on the fidelity of modelled cloud-associated processes relative to observations.     Description: We present a new method capable of measuring iron isotope ratios of igneous materials to high precision by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) using a 57 Fe- 58 Fe double spike. After sample purification, near-baseline signal levels of nickel are still present in the sample solution, acting as an isobaric interference on 58 amu. To correct for the interference, the minor 60 Ni isotope is monitored and used to subtract a proportional 58 Ni signal from the total 58 amu beam. The 60 Ni signal is difficult to precisely measure on the Faraday detector due to Johnson noise occurring at similar magnitude. This noise-dominated signal is subtracted from the total 58 amu beam, and its error amplified during the double spike correction. Placing the 60 Ni beam on an ion counter produces a more precise measurement, resulting in a near-threefold improvement in δ 56 Fe reproducibility, from ±0.145‰ when measured on Faraday to 0.052‰. Faraday detectors quantify the 60 Ni signal poorly, and fail to discern the transient 20 Ne 40 Ar interference visible on the ion counter, which is likely responsible for poor reproducibility. Another consideration is instrumental stability (defined herein as drift in peak center mass), which affects high resolution analyses. Analyses experiencing large drift relative to bracketing standards often yield non-replicating data. Based on this, we present a quantitative outlier detection method capable of detecting drift-affected data. After outlier rejection, long-term precision on individual runs of our secondary standard improves to ±0.046‰. Averaging 3-4 analyses further improves precision to 0.019‰, allowing distinction between ultramafic minerals. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

    Description: The formation and decomposition of methane+methylcyclohexane (MCH) hydrate in a static batch reactor, which was also designed as a high-pressure microwave reactor, were investigated. The addition of 300 ppm sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) provides continuous formation of CH 4 +MCH hydrate under static conditions. Increasing the initial pressure within the narrow range of 2.7 to 4.6 MPa at 274 K enhances the formation rate by even several times. The gas storage capacity can be largely improved with partial coexisting of sI CH 4 hydrate. Unlike a stirred formation, an increase of nonaqueous MCH inhibits the static formation of sH hydrate. The following regasification by 2.45 GHz microwave heating indicates that the dissociation is rate-controlled by the parallel connection of efficient internal heating and conventional external heating. The multiphase convection characterized by osmotic dehydration and driven by intensified regasification is considered as the dominant mechanism affecting the quiescent dissociation. Enhanced quiescent production and regasification of sH gas hydrate are key aspects for industrial applications of gas hydrate storage and transportation. The decisive factors influencing the static formation and regasification of methane +methyl- cyclohexane hydrate using sodium dodecyl sulfate and 2.45 GHz microwave heating were evaluated. Multiphase convection is considered as the dominant mechanism affecting the quiescent dissociation.

    Description: According to the characteristics of quench oil and coke powder, an experimental setup is designed with a hydrocyclone for a pilot test. The relationships between structure size, flow rate, pressure drop, and separation efficiency are evaluated. The separation is successful in stable, long-period operations without complications. The stability of the separation significantly helps decrease covert damage to equipment such as fractionating towers, pumps, and heat-exchange facilities. An appropriate method for removing coke powder from quench oil by a specifically designed hydrocyclone is presented. The pilot test proves its efficiency, safety, stability, and economics. Excellent separation efficiency is achieved under optimized operating conditions. The separation is successful in stable, long-period operations without complications.

    Description: Abstract The abundance and sources of ice‐nucleating particles, particles required for heterogeneous ice nucleation, are long‐standing sources of uncertainty in quantifying aerosol‐cloud interactions. In this study, we demonstrate near closure between immersion freezing ice‐nucleating particle number concentration (nINPs) observations and nINPs calculated from simulated sea spray aerosol and dust. The Community Atmospheric Model with constrained meteorology was used to simulate aerosol concentrations at the Mace Head Research Station (North Atlantic) and over the Southern Ocean to the south of Tasmania (Clouds, Aerosols, Precipitation, Radiation, and atmospherIc Composition Over the southeRN ocean campaign). Model‐predicted nINPs were within a factor of 10 of nINPs observed with an off‐line ice spectrometer at Mace Head Research Station and Clouds, Aerosols, Precipitation, Radiation, and atmospherIc Composition Over the southeRN ocean campaign, for 93% and 69% of observations, respectively. Simulated vertical profiles of nINPs reveal that transported dust may be critical to nINPs in remote regions and that sea spray aerosol may be the dominate contributor to primary ice nucleation in Southern Ocean low‐level mixed‐phase clouds.
