    Notes: The initial adhesion of four Debaryomyces hansenii strains to a solid agarose surface was investigated and correlated with their cell size and some cell surface physicochemical properties, i.e. (i) hydrophobicity and (ii) electron donor/acceptor ability. One strain adhered very poorly, whereas the three other strains were more adhesive. The former strain had a very hydrophilic cell surface, whereas the latter strains had more hydrophobic cell surfaces. In addition, the strain with the lowest adhesion among the adhesive strains had a more hydrophobic cell surface than the two most adhesive strains. Finally, the more adhesive the strain was, the larger it was, and the better it was to donate electrons from its cell surface. These results show a clear relationship between the cell size, the cell surface physicochemical properties, and the initial adhesion of D. hansenii. A possible explanation of this relationship is discussed.

    Notes: The grounds for official policy claims that environmental tobacco smoke is a major health risk remain speculative. In scientific terms, the evidence is compatible with either a slight increase or a decrease of risks, but is impotent to certify either conclusion. Official advocacy of unproven hypotheses presented as valid scientific conclusions raises serious ethical questions, and threatens the credibility of risk assessment as a legitimate policy instrument.

    Notes: The level of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and microsatellite variation present in four ecotypes and two varieties of alfalfa (lucerne) from Italian and Egyptian germplasm sources was evaluated. A sample of 100 plants from 10 populations was analysed by means of 41 RAPD markers and 37 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Both molecular approaches revealed a high degree of genetic diversity within each of the cultivated populations and enabled each of the plants considered to be uniquely fingerprinted. The genetic relationships among plants and populations were analysed by computing AMOVA (analysis of molecular variance) and FST analyses. RAPDs were able to separate the Italian populations from the Egyptian variety. SSRs allowed strong separation of the four Italian alfalfa ecotypes. It was concluded that RAPD and microsatellites could be useful and powerful tools for assessing genetic variation and genetic relationships in tetraploid alfalfa.

    Notes: We study three different versions of the Kaldor's 1940 Business-Cycle Model (13, and we show that they can all be reduced, through suitable changes of variables, to a planar dynamical system of Lienard-type.By applying a classical result due to A. Filippov (8) and a quite recent theorem of the Chinese mathematician Zhang Zhi Fen (19, it is easily proved that our systems present a unique attracting limit-cycle encircling the only existing equilibrium.Our analysis does not require any extra hypothesis regarding the symmetry of the investment and saving functions, except the «classical» ones and those needed to reducing the system to Lienard form.It extends, so far, a few previous results obtained by H.W. Lorenz (16) on the very same model.

    Notes: Studies of multichannel seismic reflection profiles, calibrated with borehole data, have been carried out in the Tunisian shelf surrounding the islands of Lampione and Lampedusa, in order to define the Mesozoic-Cenozoic stratigraphie and structural evolution of this sector of the Pelagian foreland. The stratigraphy and subsidence history show a subsiding Upper Jurassic carbonate platform buried, by syn- and post-rift neritic to deep marine siliciclastics, marls and limestones of Neocomian-early Eocene age. Thick Middle-Upper Eocene shallow-water carbonates (Halk el Menzel Fm.), lie unconformably over the deep-water sediments and exhibit progradational geometries.Messinian evaporites are confined to the deepest parts of the Neogene basins and Plio-Quaternary sediments are widespread over the area. Several unconformities affect the stratigraphic column and have been interpreted as related to compressive events during Late Cretaceous-early Tertiary times. These compressive events produced uplift, folding and reverse faulting, trending about NW-SE and partly reactivating Lower Cretaceous extensional structures. The uppermost regional unconformity indicates widespread emergence and erosion during Oligocene and Miocene tintes and was probably related to a younger compressional phase. A strong Upper Miocene-Quaternary extension event also affected the area, characterized by WNW-ESE trending normal faults, parallel to faults flanking the main grabens of the Sicily Strait rift zone. Since the Messinian, the structural evolution of the area has been controlled by rift-related processes which triggered crustal extension in the Pelagian foreland.

    Description: On 23 October 2011, an M w  7.1 earthquake struck the Van Lake region of eastern Turkey; causing vast damage in the cities of Van and Erciş. The mainshock was followed by a large number of aftershocks, which define a 60–70 km long and 30–35 km wide northeast–southwest-trending structure, in agreement with the source rupture models derived for the main event. In this paper, we take advantage of this large data set to examine the spatial and temporal properties of the Van earthquake aftershock activity. We derive the spatial distribution of b -value of the Gutenberg–Richter law, as well as complementary seismicity parameters, along the surface projection of the fault plane. Recent studies have been published on the same issue, presenting controversial and sometimes opposite results. With respect to previous studies, we rely on a possibly higher quality catalog of relocated earthquakes. Furthermore, we adopt a more conservative approach, excluding from the analysis the first few days of data, until the M c reaches a stable completeness threshold; finally, we conduct statistical tests in order to check the significance of the spatial and temporal variation of b -value across the fault plane. Calculations are made for the complete catalog and for two independent aftershock subcatalogs, after which a stable magnitude of completeness M c is reached. For each catalog, we correlate the observed b -value patterns with slip distribution models of the mainshock obtained through the inversion of seismological and geodetic data. Overall, the b -values vary from 0.9 to 1.5 along the Van rupture fault zone. The higher b -values (〉1.1) are observed around the epicenter of the mainshock characterizing the higher coseismic slip area on the fault projection. Low b -values are concentrated at the peripheral portion of the fault, away from high-slip patches. Moreover, the b -value distribution over the fault plane undergoes significant variation throughout the aftershock sequence.
