    Notes: Extensive literatures exist on both regional development and the optimum use of nonrenewable resources over time, but the two have not been melded to consider the effect of combining the optimization of resource exploitation with optimization of population growth and infrastructure investment. A model incorporating these dimensions of regional growth is analyzed using control theory to characterize the optimal time paths of the source-related investment, resource use, and infrastructure investment. An example of nonrenewable groundwater use in the Colorado High Plains region is analyzed to show the shortcomings of existing regulatory schemes.

    Notes: The responses of the cyanobacterium Phormidium laminosum to heat shock, 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide (NQO), UV light and nalidixic acid were compared by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Although there was some overlap between the responses to heat shock and to NQO and the responses to UV light and to nalidixic acid, there was otherwise little overlap. This is in marked contrast to the effects on the eukaryotic alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

    Notes: Abstract Following exposure to UV light the synthesis of six polypeptides (112, 100, 89, 76, 71 and 65 kDa) was found to be enhanced or induced in the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Treatment with 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide (NQO) resulted in the enhanced/induced synthesis of six polypeptides with molecular masses similar to those enhanced following exposure to UV light. Heat shock resulted in the enhanced synthesis of five polypeptides (89, 76, 71, 60 and 22 kDa), three of which (89, 76 and 71 kDa) had apparently identical mobilities to polypeptides whose synthesis was enhanced following UV treatment.

    Notes: Abstract In a previous study we found that the 33 kDa extrinsic polypeptide of Photosystem II is present in both the cytoplasmic and thylakoid membranes of cyanobacteria, but forms part of a functional complex only in the latter [Smith et al. (1987) Mol. Microbiol. 6, 1821–1827]. In order to determine if this phenomenon is restricted to the 33 kDa polypeptide we have extended this study in Anacystis nidulans to include a number of other polypeptides of Photosystem I and Photosystem II. We have found that D1 and possibly PsaC are present in both membranes, CP43 and CP47 are confined to the thylakoid membranes, and the distribution of PsaD and PsaE is dependent upon the growth stage of the cyanobacteria.

    Notes: Selected trace elements were determined in dried, cooked turkey breast muscle (pectoralis major) by three methods: atomic absorption spectro-photometry, (AAS), neutron activation analysis (NAA), and x-ray fluorescence (XRF). Atomic absorption and NAA gave similar values for zinc, but XRF determinations were significantly higher. Iron values were higher when determined by XRF than when determined by AAS. Neutron activation and XRF gave similar values for rubidium. Copper and iron were not detectable by NAA and copper not detectable by XRF. Generally, atomic absorption spectrophotometry was the most precise method.

    Notes: SUMMARY— The effects of temperature and humidity on postmortem and associated muscle properties during growth of “stress susceptible” pigs were evaluated. Exposure to ambient temperatures of 32 and 21°C for alternating 3-day periods caused rapid post-mortem glycolysis, high percent light reflectance, and increased light to dark fiber ratios in the longissimus dorsi muscle as compared to constant (27°C) temperature, but only in moderate (38–42% relative) humidity environments. The above events due to temperature acclimation were masked when the humidity was low (17–23% relative). Humidity effects that were independent of temperature acclimation resulted in high percent light reflectance and high muscle temperature in the post-mortem muscle of pigs reared in low humidity. No significant differences were found in lactic dehydrogenase or succinic dehydrogenase enzyme activities of longissimus dorsi or gluteus medius muscles.

    Notes: SUMMARY: Adenosine triphosphate, creatine phosphate and glucose-6-phosphate levels in the muscle of Poland China pigs reared under controlled temperature conditions were studied. Longissimus dorsi muscle from animals reared in 32°C environments had higher initial levels of adenosine triphosphate and creatine phosphate (P 〈 0.05) and lower levels of glucose-6-phosphate than that from animals reared at 21°C. Muscle from the latter group of animals underwent more rapid post-mortem glycolysis (measured as muscle pH) and more rapid increase in light reflectance. Results indicate that accelerated post-mortem glycolysis in muscle from pigs grown in specified environments may be a reflection of environmental effects upon the ability of porcine muscle to store and maintain high levels of high energy phosphate compounds.
