    Notes: The bioavailability of iron formed by the corrosion of low-carbon steel (99% Fe) in contact with Red Delicious apples was measured in a rat model using a depletion-repletion experiment. The percentage of ingested iron converted to hemoglobin iron (Conversion Efficiency) was 74, 57, and 56%, respectively, for daily doses of 110, 190, and 285 μg of this iron. (Conversion Efficiency for FeSO4 was 46-50%). When compared with FeSO4= 100, the relative biological value of this iron was found to range from 93–153. Ingestion of one Red Delicious apple that has been exposed to eight large iron nails for 24 hr could provide 10–15 mg iron having good bioavailability.

    Description: The central Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) is an actively rifting continental arc and is well known for its exceptionally high rate of rhyolitic magma generation and frequent caldera-forming eruptions. Two end-member types of rhyolites (R1 and R2) have been previously identified based on differences in their bulk-rock chemistry and mineral assemblage with hydrous phases crystallizing in the R1 type, which are not present or only rare in R2 rhyolites. Here we present new trace element and volatile data from rhyolitic melt inclusions measured in several representative eruptive deposits (R1 and R2 rhyolites) from the central TVZ to examine their volatile concentrations and origin. R1 and R2 show very distinct Cl concentrations, with R2 rhyolites being enriched in Cl by c . 1000 ppm. H 2 O is slightly higher in the R1 rhyolites, whereas CO 2 concentrations are similar between the two end-member types. The origin of these volatile disparities between R1 and R2 melts is assigned to differences in the initial bulk volatile content of the parental magma, possibly associated with distinct input of fluids from the subduction zone. These disparities in bulk volatile concentrations can lead to variations in relative timing of exsolution of volatile phase(s) prior to melt inclusion entrapment.     Description: A series of Cu-substituted goethites, single and co-substituted with Cr, Zn, Cd and/or Pb was prepared, having molar ratios equal to 2.00, 3.33 and 5.00 mol%. All the samples contained only goethite, except Cu-, (Cu,Zn)- and (Cu,Pb)-samples synthesized at 5.00 mol% where hematite was also formed. The presence of Cr/Cd suppressed the hematite-forming effects of Cu. The general sequence of metal entry into the single-metal-substituted goethites was Zn = Cr 〉 Cd 〉 Cu 〉 Pb and in di- (5.00 mol%) and tri- (3.33 mol%) metal-substituted goethites was Cu 〉 Zn 〉 Cd 〉 Cr 〉〉 Pb. Cu incorporation increased all the unit-cell parameters in single-metal-substituted goethite, and these parameters increased in combination with other metals as follows: Cd 〉 Zn 〉 Cr 〉 Pb in the multimetal-substituted goethites. The Cu-substituted goethite dissolved faster than pure goethite. Co substitutions of Cr/Pb reduced the dissolution rate (kFe), while substitutions of Cd/Zn increased kFe.
