    Notes: An apparatus was developed that combined microwave energy and cold air with different ambient temperatures to reduce thawing time and avoid run-away heating during microwave assisted thawing. Effects of microwave power level, sample thickness and surface air temperature on thawing time were investigated. The microwave power was cycled on and off using two temperature control schemes to maintain a predetermined temperature gradient based on hot and cold points. Thawing time was reduced by as much as a factor of seven compared to convective thawing at ambient temperature when appropriate conditions were used.

    Notes: Dielectric properties [dielectric constant (ɛ') and loss factor (ɛ”)] were measured using the transmission line technique. Dielectric constant was independent of salt content while ɛ” increased when salt was added. Dielectric constant increased when temperature increased from 25 to 60°C then became virtually constant from 60 to 95°C for all samples. Loss factor increased linearly from 25 to 95°C for samples containing 1% salt and decreased linearly when no salt was present. Both ɛ’ and ɛ” increased linearly with respect to mass concentration of water (gwater/cm3sample). Ground bread crumb had lower ɛ’ and ɛ” than intact bread when other parameters were kept constant.

    Notes: Predicted global changes can be studied effectively by combining spatially explicit data sets on vegetation and other landscape properties with process models. However, detailed knowledge of the vegetation distribution of remote Arctic areas is relatively scarce. This paper shows how a mesoscale vegetation and land cover classification of a large, remote Arctic area can be conducted at a fine spatial resolution (30 m cell size) using a limited ground reference data set. The study area is the catchment of the River Usa (93 500 km2) in north-eastern European Russia. Vegetation zones in the Usa Basin range from taiga in the south to forest-tundra and tundra in the north, and to alpine in the Ural mountains in the east. Classification was done using a mosaic of spectrally adjusted Landsat TM5 images from five different dates and a semi-supervised method. Ground reference data were collected during the summers of 1998, 1999 and 2000. Accuracy of the 21-class vegetation type/land cover classification produced was tested against test points interpreted from oblique aerial photographs taken from a helicopter (logistic limitations prohibited the collection of representative ground reference data). The main vegetation types (forests, willow dominated stands and meadows, peatlands, tundra heaths, mainly unvegetated areas, and water bodies) were distinguished with relatively high accuracy: 84% of the test points were classified correctly. Spatially detailed land cover data sets like the one described here allow detailed landscape-level analysis and process modelling on many different subjects.

    Notes: 1. The structure of bryophyte communities in streams in relation to habitat characteristics, especially disturbance, is described. Disturbance in rivers is quantified as movement of the stream bed, whereas in small streams water level fluctuation is used as an indicator of disturbance frequency.2. Canonical correspondence analysis differentiated frequently disturbed sites from more stable ones. The existence of a disturbance gradient was confirmed in a subset of the study sites using long-term records of discharge variation. A parallel change was detected in the species composition of bryophyte communities with low-statured, potentially fast colonizers dominating the disturbed end and large perennial species the stable end of the gradient.3. A consistent pattern of zonation of bryophyte species was found along the gradient from continually submersed to persistently dry conditions in small streams and lake outlets. An abrupt increase in species richness occurred at or just above the water line, where facultatively aquatic species tolerant of both conditions formed the bulk of the community.4. The relationship between species richness and standing crop in stream bryophyte communities was consistent with the hump-backed model of Grime (1979), especially at the within-habitat scale. Quadrats of low and very high standing crop were characterized by low species richness, while peak richness was observed at intermediate standing crops.5. A few perennial species (e.g. Fontinalis spp. and Rhynchostegium riparioides) capable of monopolizing space dominated the most stable habitats. Species composition in low biomass sites was more variable, yet only one basic growth-form (small-statured species with high allocation to spore production) seemed possible in these highly disturbed streams. In habitats of intermediate biomass, small-scale disturbances apparently allow the formation of a more varied bryophyte community.6. A habitat templet for stream bryophyte life strategies and community structure is presented. Disturbance is proposed to be the factor filtering out traits unsuitable for a given environment. The potential of stream bryophytes for testing and developing general ecological theory is emphasized.

    Notes: Abstract. The effect of betaine (+ amino acid) supplementation on the seawater adaptation of salmon, Salmo salar L., smolts was studied in two separate trials. The fish were fed with feed containing various levels (0-5-1-5%) of FinnStim, a commercial product with betaine as the main component, for a 6–8 week period before seawater transfer and during the 3-week period in sea water. Growth and mortality were followed during the course of the studies, and the ionic and osmotic balance of fish estimated prior to seawater transfer, and one day and one week after the transfer.Smolts fed with FinnStim had less weight loss after seawater transfer in both trials, and significantly lower mortality in the second trial, than the control smolts. Smolts fed with 1% FinnStim tended to have faster recovery in appetite after seawater transfer. While the main plasma electrolytes showed no clear response to FinnStim treatment, the intramuscular potassium load in sea water was less pronounced in FinnStim fish.

    Notes: The removal of the apical buds from the top of inoculated pea ptants before flowering caused the axillary buds of the stem leaves to develop and thus further to branch. The vegetative growth of the test plants continued to be luxuriant when blooming was delayed. While the control ptants formed seeds and ripined. the vegetative growth of the stem of the test ptants increased at most eight-fold during the same time. A new, additional red part grew at the same time in the root nodules, which had already partly become green. The new red part branched later so that the imusuatty large nodules appeared quite odd. The weight of the branched, large nodules had at the same time increased on the average six-fold and the vegetatively grown test plants synthesized even eight times more nitrogen than did the control plants. The concentration of teghaemoglobin in the nodules formed by the bacterial strain used in the experiment was not inereased, but the absolute amount of the pigment was raised six-fold as a result of the increased nodule mass. While the vegetative growth was going on, oxidation of the leghaemoglobin was delayed.Analyses of nitrogen and amino acids were made for both test and control plants.The total length of the branches in the largest test plant was 32 m compared with the unbranched control plant which was 1.30 m.
