Description: A magnetically driven fast-ion loss detector system for the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak has been designed and will be presented here. The device is feedback controlled to adapt the detector head position to the heat load and physics requirements. Dynamic simulations have been performed taking into account effects such as friction, coil self-induction, and eddy currents. A real time positioning control algorithm to maximize the detector operational window has been developed. This algorithm considers dynamical behavior and mechanical resistance as well as measured and predicted thermal loads. The mechanical design and real time predictive algorithm presented here may be used for other reciprocating systems.

Description: Based on a magnetic relaxation model, an approach that includes the spin dynamics is proposed and applied to describe the magnetoelectric (ME) effect frequency dependence for a 0–3 type composite at low temperatures. Our results show that the ME coefficient, in low temperatures, for PMN-PT/CFO ( ( 1 − x ) P b ( M g 1 / 3 N b 2 / 3 ) − x P b T i O 3 / C o F e 2 O 4 ) composite has a step-like behavior on the hysteresis loop for frequency of 1 kHz, contrasting with the results at low frequencies (10 Hz). This approach assumes that the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phases are coupled through the interactions of the spins of the ferromagnetic phase with the composite phonons by spin/lattice relaxation.

Description: Martensitic polycrystalline Ni 48.8 Mn 31.4 Ga 19.8 Heusler alloys, with a stacking period of 14 atomic planes at room temperature, were innovatively processed by combining high-energy ball milling and powder metallurgy. Bulk samples were mechanically coupled to a piezoelectric material in a parallel configuration, and the mechanical deformation of the studied system due to the twin's variant motion was investigated under overlapped static and oscillating magnetic fields. A reversible and high mechanical deformation is observed when the frequency of the oscillating magnetic field is tuned with the natural vibration frequency of this system. In this condition, a linear deformation as a function of the static magnetic field amplitude occurs in the ±4 kOe range, and a mechanical deformation of 2% at 10 kOe is observed.

Description: The work within the Geometrothermodynamics programme rests upon the metric structure for the thermodynamic phase-space. Such structure exhibits discrete Legendre symmetry. In this work, we study the class of metrics which are invariant along the infinitesimal generators of Legendre transformations. We solve the Legendre-Killing equation for a K -contact general metric. We consider the case with two thermodynamic degrees of freedom, i.e., when the dimension of the thermodynamic phase-space is five. For the generic form of contact metrics, the solution of the Legendre-Killing system is unique, with the sole restriction that the only independent metric function – Ω – should be dragged along the orbits of the Legendre generator. We revisit the ideal gas in the light of this class of metrics. Imposing the vanishing of the scalar curvature for this system results in a further differential equation for the metric function Ω which is not compatible with the Legendre invariance constraint. This result does not allow us to use Quevedo's interpretation of the curvature scalar as a measure of thermodynamic interaction for this particular class.

Notes: Taking into account configuration interaction between 4f2 and 4f15d1 via the odd rank crystal field parameters eliminates most of the well-known discrepancy of the 1D2 multiplet of trivalent praseodymium in PrCl3, found when "standard'' crystal field treatment is applied to experimental data. Ab initio values of crystal field parameters agree with the new parameters including the configuration interaction.

Notes: A previous paper gave the results of a full calculation involving free ion and crystal–field interaction within the 4 f2 and 4 f15d1 configurations. Presently, the calculation is extended to 4 f16s1 and 4 f16p1 as well. As a result, the usual experimental/calculated discrepancy of the 1D2 multiplet is completely eliminated. A complete Hamiltonian, including the magnetic contribution, is utilized to reproduce the Zeeman effect in PrCl3.

Notes: A limited LCAO model was applied to a series of 12 rare earth or rare earth doped compounds and one actinide compound, namely, LiYF4:Nd3+, KY3F10:Eu3+, YOCl:Eu3+, BaFCl:Sm2+, SrFCl:Sm2+, Nd2O3, Nd2O2S, NdAlO3, LaAlO3:Eu3+, LaCl3:Nd3+, YF3:Gd3+, Y2O3:Eu3+, and CsUF6. The procedure and the approximations are detailed. The overlap integrals are calculated and fitted to analytical functions of the distance for nine rare earth–ligand pairs: Nd3+, Eu3+, Tm3+/O2−, F−, and Cl− utilizing literature radial wave functions. For each species, the ionization energies are assigned mean values. The one-electron energies given by the diagonalization of the interaction matrix are transformed into sets of Bkq crystal field parameters. The comparison with literature phenomenological values is made in terms of scale and reliability factors. In most cases the results are satisfactory.

Notes: Abstract. Changes in amounts of macro-(N, P, K) and micro-nutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) were determined in two calcareous soils amended over an eight-month period with pig slurry applications ranging from 0 to 500 m3/ha, and planted in containers with green pepper (Capsicum annuum). Total N and exchangeable K increased after slurry applications of 300 m3/ha or more, and available P increased after the smallest application rate (100m3/ha). Maximum crop nutrient uptakes of 41, 40 and 91% for N, P and K occurred with the smallest dose of slurry. Large losses of N, ranging from 27 to 74% (mean 55%) of N added to soil, occurred with all slurry treatments. From 41 to 71% (mean 55%) of the total P added in pig slurry was fixed in non-assimilable forms. Most of the K from the pig slurry was available to the plants. Most of the micro-nutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) from the slurry were immobilized in the soil, probably because of the high pH and the small amounts of organic matter in both the slurries and soils tested.

Notes: Thirty-six Hevea clones were inoculated with conidia of Microcyclus ulei, the causal agent of South American Leaf Blight in an air-conditioned chamber. Components of disease resistance such as latent period, infectious period, lesion size, percentage of damaged leaf area, number of lesions, spore production and stromatic generation period were studied during a single infection cycle. The clones were easily separated on the basis of these characters that were evaluated under controlled conditions. The main components that were highly correlated were the spore production, lesion size and number of lesions with the percentage of damaged leaf area. Others, such the stromatic generation period, were slightly correlated with all other components; latent period and infectious period was slightly correlated with the lesion size; and lesion size was slightly correlated with lesion density. For screening of varieties, damaged leaf area and spore production were the two components that should be considered the most important. Furthermore, the clones were tested for their capacity to produce scopoletin, a phytoalexin of Hevea, and to produce lignins in their infection sites. A strong correlation was observed between scopoletin accumulation and clone resistance. Moreover, strong lignin accumulation was often associated with a longer stromatic generation period. These two physiological reactions could interfere by limiting fungal development in several clones. However, neither scopoletin nor lignin accumulation could individually explain the behaviour of all clones.

Notes: A simple criterion for colliding gravitational plane waves is developed. This colliding wave condition is preserved by a new realization of the Geroch group augmented by a Kramer–Neugebauer involution. A three-parameter generalization of a two-parameter family of solutions with noncollinear polarization discovered recently by Ferrari, Ibañez, and Bruni is presented, and two additional solutions are derived that demonstrate that much larger families are likely to be constructed in the near future.
