Notes: Abstract Chitinolytic bacteria were enumerated and isolated from marine waters and sediments along the highly productive Antarctic Peninsula. Chitinolytic bacteria were found in low concentrations (approximately 1 cell per ml) in the water column and at much higher levels in marine surface sediments (104–105 per g). The predominant chitinolytic bacteria isolated from the water column were identified as psychrophilic Vibrio spp. Rates of chitin mineralization were measured by collection of 14CO2 respired from 14C-labeled chitin synthesized from chitosan and [1-14C]acetic anhydride. Chitin mineralization rates were extremely low in the marine waters analyzed (0.00085–0.0019% of the added label respired in 48 h) and appreciably higher in the marine sediments (0.0039–0.01% per 48 h), suggesting that the sediments are much more important in chitin degradation. Such low mineralization rates suggest that chitin may be accumulating in Antarctic marine sediments, though animals may also play an important role in chitin degradation.

Notes: : The Pawtuxet River flows from a relatively rural area through some of the more highly industrialized sections of Rhode Island. During its journey, the river receives many municipal, industrial, and ground water sources of metal constituents. The present report is the first in a two part series in which the water quality of this urban river was evaluated by a chemical monitoring study of the sources, transport mechanisms, and fate of cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, and nickel in the river. The second paper will use the chemical data to derive and calibrate a steady-state water quality model for this river. The metal concentrations In the river tended to increase from the headwaters to the mouth with river stations nearest to point source outfalls showing elevated values. In some sections of the river, levels of a few of the metals could not be explained by the point sources; and other inputs, including sediment resuspension, axe proposed to make up this apparent unbalance. The ability of a municipal secondary treatment plant to remove metals was demonstrated, and the tie-in of the effluent from a major chemical company to the plant did not cause any observable deterioration in treatment efficiency.

Notes: : The influence of perceptions of water quality on the likelihood of recreating at a particular recreation site is investigated using a logit model. The model is estimated for St. Albans Bay, Vermont. A hypothetical improvement in water quality was shown to greatly increase the probability of at least one visit to the bay during a season. This implies that many recreationists who do not use the bay at present will do so if water quality improves. A demand model for predicting site visitation must, therefore, include current nonusers in the sample. Failure to do so would result in misleading predictions about future demand for the bay.

Notes: : This paper presents a condensed history of the State Water Resources Research Institute Program, which evolved from the Water Resources Research Act of 1964, as amended, the Water Research and Development Act of 1978, Public Law (P.L.) 96–457, and the Water Research and Development Act of 1984. These laws authorized the following components of the Institute Program: (1) the annual allotment and matching grants program for the Institutes, and (2) the additional and saline water research programs for organizations in addition to the State Water Resources Research Institutes. The paper covers the legislative history of the Institute Program and reviews authorized and appropriated funds for the program from fiscal year 1965 to fiscal year 1986. It also discusses the Institutes’role in conducting and sponsoring water-resources research and development, training of scientists and engineers, and coordinating, disseminating, and transferring water-research results. The State Water Resources Research Program has been administered by the Office of Water Resources Research (OWRR) (1964–1974), the Office of Water Research and Technology (OWRT) (1974–1982), the Office of Water Policy (OWP) (1982–1983), and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) (1983-present).

Notes: Treating tissue with electrical current was found to affect both the initial attachment and total numbers of attached Salmonella typhimurium to meat tissues. When lean tissue was attached to the positive terminal of the power supply operating at 50 volts/125 mA DC, the total number of attached cells increased. There was no effect when the samples were attached to the negative terminal. There was a significant (P〈0.05) effect on the percentage of strongly attached bacteria with an increase in treating time. Electrical current was found to increase the percentage of strongly attached cells immediately after the current was applied.

Notes: The objective of this study is to examine the potential benefits of using latent root regression techniques to improve the stability of appraisal coefficients (hedonic prices) over time. Another related objective is to more clearly identify the nature and implications of collinearity present in most appraisal models. The results indicate that the majority of the collinearity present in the data is of a predictive nature, hence latent root techniques will likely show little or no improvement over OLS models.

Notes: The liquidity of the single-family home has been potentially compromised by prevailing conventional mortgage market conditions in the 1980s. The primary objectives of this study are to investigate the degree of liquidity of a given residence, defined to incorporate both the “recovery-of-value” and “timeliness” dimensions, and the major influences upon such liquidity. The multivariate techniques of canonical correlation and multiple discriminant analysis are employed to identify those property characteristics and/or prevailing mortgage market conditions that most appreciably influence the liquidity of a residential listing.

Notes: : The paper demonstrates that there is a simple, robust negative relationship between employment and real wages, detectable in the macroeconomic data of most countries, if it is looked for in the right way. This is the stylised fact of the title.
