    Notizen: SUMMARY– The influence of dietary regimen of 104 half-sib Angus steers allotted to 1 of 13 combinations of hay, corn silage and corn concentrate, and of slaughter weights of 284 vs. 340 kg and 409 vs. 454 kg (live weight) on processing qualities and palatability of beef was studied. Measurements included postmortem glycolytic activity, water- and fat-binding capacity, textural properties, cooking losses, flavor and juiciness of selected muscles. Results showed that feeding regimens had a greater effect than did slaughter weight on qualities studied. Corn silage in the early dietary regimen of cattle weighing 284 and 340 kg resulted in significantly lower pH values (5 and 45 min post-mortem), higher amounts of glycogen at slaughter and greater water- and fat-binding capacity as compared to hay. Similar effects of early diet were noted for 5- and 45-min pH and water-binding capacity in cattle fed to heavier weights (409 and 454 kg); however, in these animals the early-hay diet resulted in greater muscle glycogen deposition than the early-silage diet. Steaks from animals fed corn silage in the early period were determined to be more tender by both shear values and panel scores and were more juicy and flavorful than those from hay-fed animals. These differences in palatability due to early diet were still evident after the cattle had been fed to heavier (409 and 454 kg) weights. When steers weighing 409 and 454 kg were grouped together, the effects of feeding regimen during the intermediate period were considerably less pronounced than those of the early feeding period.

    Notizen: SYNOPSIS. A careful re-examination with refined technics of the ultrastructure of the formation of calcified scales (coccoliths) in the marine unicellular alga Hymenomonas carterae has yielded new and more detailed information about the structure and morphogenesis of these unique and complex Golgi-elaborated organelles. The coccolith rim is formed from 2 distinct, alternating, anvil-shaped elements, 13–16 each, fitted together with a “right-handed” asymmetry. The coccolith is assembled in Golgi cisternae from 2 precursors, a single, scale-like base and multiple granular elements called coccolithosomes. The association of scales and coccolithosomes and subsequent development to the mature coccolith occur in a characteristic sequential fashion within what is one of the better examples of a polarized Golgi. Morphogenesis involves a special cisternal membrane association with the base of the coccolith, the contribution of granular material by coccolithosomes to form the outer rim matrix, and the subsequent filling of the area enclosed by the matrix with an electron-dense material, presumably CaCO3. A “microenvironment” model system for species specific shape-determination of calcified elements is proposed.

    Notizen: The study of the optimal expansion of existing water resources systems is of continuing importance because of the rising demand and limited supply of water in many areas of the world, particularly in the southwestern part of the United States of America. This study is concerned with the investigation of the optimal expansion of a realistic water resources system to meet an increasing demand for municipal and industrial use, irrigation, energy, and recreation over a planning horizon of T years.A number of possible dam sites are available for the further regulation of river (canal) flows in the basin and/or the regulation of imported waters into the basin. To maximize, over the set of alternative projects, the sum of discounted present value of net earnings subject to the demands and various institutional, physical and budgetary limits, an optimization problem (Problem I) was formed as a 0-1 mixed integer programming problem and was decomposed into the set of all feasible combinations (Problem II). The economic return was determined for each combination (Problem III).Problem II was solved by a branch and bound procedure which selected each feasible combination of dams while the optimal return for each such combination (Problem III) was found by a network analysis code.

    Notizen: Chlorophyll formation in seven day old etiolated mung bean leaves was inhibited by CMU. The inhibition was reversed by feeding sucrose, or by leaving the cotyledons attached to the leaves. Photosynthesis appeared to contribute substrates for further chloroplast development soon after its commencement. When sucrose was fed in the presence of CMU at a range of light intensities, there was a distinct light induced promotion of chlorophyll formation at light intensities of 500–2000 lux. Treatment of the leaves with salicyl-aldoxime, an inhibitor of cyclic photophosphorylation indicated that this process could play an important part in chloroplast development.

    Notizen: SUMMARY —When chicken broiler backs containing varying amounts of skin were mechanically deboned, the product obtained was shown to be directly affected by skin content. As the skin content on the backs increased in relation to muscle and bone content, the fat content of the deboned meat increased and the moisture and protein contents decreased. The connective tissue protein content of the meat was not affected by increasing skin content on the backs. Data obtained from passing backs as well as isolated poultry skin through the deboner indicate that the fat from the skin was expressed through the screen along with the meat. The majority of the skin protein, collagen, did not pass through the screen but was passed out in the residue along with the bone. The meat from the backs containing large amounts of skin may have poor emulsifying characteristics because of its high fat and low protein content.
