Notes: This paper deals with the problem of modelling sub-county areas that are so small that county level forecasts cannot be used for policy purposes. Starting from a simple specification that relates demand for local goods and services to local and non-local income, a system of equations is developed that can be used as a satellite to a county model to forecast impacts of economic events at the town level. Regression coefficients for the equations are estimated using data at the one-digit SIC code level for a pooled sample of towns in Massachusetts. Model validation tests are reported. An example of an application is provided by simulating impacts of 500 new manufacturing jobs in a town within a county. Our approach yields simulation and forecasting results for both the town and the county.

Notes: Abstract Ethylene and ethane production in mung bean hypocotyl sections were evaluated as possible indicators of stress due to contact with four salts that are common in natural sites. Ethylene production decreased with increasing concentrations of applied NaCl and KCl. When CaCl2 was applied, the ethylene evolution was greater. However, when MgCl2 was applied, ethylene evolution remained high then decreased and at higher salt concentrations again showed an increase. NaCl (up to 0.1 kmol m−1) and KCl (up to 0.5 kmol m−3) caused a concentration-dependent increase in ethane production. The ethane production with CaCl2 was the lowest among the salts tested and only a minute increase was noticed with the increase of concentration from 0.01 to 1 kmol m−3. Ethane production showed a distinct maximum at 0.2 kmol m−3 MgCl2. The introduction of 0.01 kmol m−3 CaCl2, as well as anaerobic conditions obtained by purging vials with N2, eliminated that high ethane production. Respiratory activity of the mung bean hypocotyl sections in MgCl2 concentrations from 0 to 0.5 kmol m−3 was correlated with ethane but not with ethylene production. The ethane/ethylene ratio showed three patterns for the four salts tested.

Notes: Ground beef patties were prepared, by infrared broiling in a conveyorized broiler and compared with those cooked on a conventional gas broiler. Results showed that with the high temperatures and short cooking times possible with the infrared broiler, more servings per hour could be produced by this new method of preparation than with the standard gas broiler. Also, no significant difference in the percent shrinkage of the patties was found when the two methods of broiling were compared. Both of these conclusions were supported regardless of the degree of doneness. Finally, the only significant difference in sensory evaluation of the five attributes was found in appearance, where gas broiled patties were rated higher than the infrared broiled samples (p 〉 0.05).

Notes: Germination of the polymorphic seeds and seedling growth of Atriplex triangularis under various salinity, gibberellic acid and kinetin treatments were determined. Gibberellic acid (GA3; 2.9 mM) promoted germination and growth at high NaCl concentrations (345 mM). Kinetin (4.7 μM) stimulated germination at all salinities and seed sizes tested. GA3 and kinetin generally increased seedling growth at all concentrations of salinity studied. Higher concentrations of kinetin were found to be inhibitory.
