Notizen: For constrained inversion of potential field data within the framework of generalized inversion an analysis of data error variances leads to confidence limits for the model parameters. For that purpose Pseudo-hyper-ellipsoids can be used to describe the nonlinear behaviour of the given inverse problem, and upper and lower bounds can be added to those parameters of which some independent knowledge is available. A gravity example is treated to show the application of the method.

Notizen: The interpretation of potential field data from two-dimensional structures with a single interface of density or susceptibility contrasts is solved in terms of generalized matrix inversion. The model equations are derived, and important features of generalized matrix inversion are treated. The method is subsequently used to solve two gravity problems, an artificial one where the solution is known, and a geophysical one related to the crust-mantle interface. The solution is shown to compare well with the FFT results of Oldenburg. The method is also used to solve two magnetic problems, an artificial one with the solution known, and a geophysical one from the continental shelf of Greenland. The advantages and limitations of the method are finally discussed.

Notizen: From gravity it is well known how to determine the excess mass and the horizontal center of mass of the disturbing body. We show that a magnetic body—under rather weak assumptions—possesses excess magnetization and centers of magnetization (both horizontal and vertical), which can be uniquely determined from measurements. It also follows that the vertical center of mass can be uniquely determined from the vertical derivative of the gravity field.

Notizen: A general treatment of end corrections in gravity and magnetic modeling is presented. The well-known 2-D formulae of Talwani and Talwani and Heirtzler become slightly changed to represent a 2 1/2–D body, i.e. a body of polygonal cross section with the tails In the strike direction cut off.

Notizen: Well developed dish structures occur in two out of 179 numbered ash layers in a 60 m thick section of Lower Eocene marine diatomite in northern Denmark. One of the two dish-structured ash layers also contains Type A pillar structures of Lowe (1975). The ash layers are well graded and the grain sizes fall in the range of fine sand to coarse silt. The ash was transported by wind from volcanoes located in the Skagerrak and settled grain-by-grain on the sea floor. The ash layers were thus laid down by rapid sedimentation compared to the relatively slow deposition of the diatomite. The two ash layers showing dish structures are among the coarsest grained and thickest of the 179 layers. Other layers, which are equally thick but significantly finer grained or equally coarse-grained but thinner, show no water escape structures. The rapid deposition of the coarse-grained ash on the fine-grained, waterlogged diatom ooze may have started consolidation processes in the ooze, thereby inducing a water flow into the ash layer. This led to liquefaction and localized fluidization of the ash layer resulting in the formation of dish and pillar structures. The present study supports the interpretation of dish and pillar structures as secondary structures, formed by water escape. This occurrence represents the first description of these structures from beds not deposited by currents and indicates that dish structures are not diagnostic of any type of sediment gravity flow.

Notizen: A particulate enzyme displaying peroxidase activity has been extracted from the red alga Cystoclonium purpureum (Huds.) Batt. The enzyme preparation was shown to contain ferri-protoporphyrin IX through its formation of formic acid hemochromogen with absorption maxima at 399, 402, 555 and 600 nm. The preparation catalyses the formation of 3-bromo-p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol from p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol in the presence of H2O2 and NaBr at pH = 5.4. The formation of 3-bromo-p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol was measured by gas chromato-graphy-mass spectrometry. At pH = 6.7, 4,5-di-hydroxybenzyl alcohol was formed. Addition of homogentisic acid stimulated the formation of dihydroxybenzyl alcohol and suppressed the brominating reaction. Iodide inhibits the enzyme. The results are consistent with a two-site model of the enzyme.

Notizen: Cell suspensions of Daucus carota and Haplopappus gracilis and callus suspensions of Allum cepa var. proliferum were grown in media with and without activated charcoal. Differentiation occurred in those Daucus and Allium cultures that contained charcoal. It was shown by mass spectrometry that the media without charcoal contained high amounts of phenylacetic acid and p-OH-benzoic acid (Daucus), 2,6-OH-benzoic acid (Allium) and benzoic acid, pelargonic acid and caprylic acid (Haplopappus), whereas the media with activated charcoal did not. It was also shown that p-OH-benzoic acid had inhibitory effects on the embryogenesis in Daucus cultures.

Notizen: The pigment floridorunin was localized to the cuticle of the red alga Lenormandia prolifera (C. Ag.) J. Agardh by x-ray micro-analysis in Ihe transmission electron microscope and by its colour reactions in the light microscope. The pigment was set free from the cell wall by a pectinase. Bromine was also identified in the chloro-plasts. the middle lamellae, the intercellulars and the pore plugs of the alga. The content of bromophenols in the alga increases with increasing age. The cell walls of old plants are stratified and their outer parts are apparently shed. The bromophenols could have a function as regulators of the epiphytes or the shedding of parts of the outer cell wall.
