Notes: Economic theory is often criticized for the lack of ‘realism’ of its assumptions. Milton Friedman rebutted such criticism with the famous dictum ‘the more significant the theory, the more unrealistic the assumptions’. Friedman's position, often called the ‘F-twist’, stems from his failure to distinguish three different types of assumption. Negligibility assumptions state that some factor has a negligible effect upon the phenomenon under investigation. Domain assumptions specify the domain of applicability of the theory. Heuristic assumptions are a means of simplifying the logical development of the theory. It is argued that Friedman's dictum is false of all three types of assumption. Finally, it is conjectured that what began as a negligibility assumption may be changed under the impact of criticism first into a domain assumption, then into a mere heuristic assumption; and that these important changes will go unnoticed if the different types of assumption are not clearly distinguished from one another.

Notes: Experiments on the stratification of seeds of pear (Pyrus communis cv. Bartlett) indicate that there is a progressive increase in respiratory capacity, with about a three-fold increase developing during a 30-day stratification period. Evidence is presented suggesting this increase in respiratory capacity occurs in the cytochrome oxidase pathway and not in the alternative pathway of respiration. The increase is much less pronounced if the seeds are held at 25°C rather than at 6°C. The seed coat serves as a barrier to the expression of the increased respiratory capacity.

Notes: Respiratory activities in soybean seeds (Glvcine max (L.) Merr. cv. Chippewa 64) have been examined in the first minutes after water imbibition and after three hours of imbibition, using either particles or intact axes. Cyanide and azide were utilized as inhibitors of the cytochrome oxidase pathway of respiration, and SHAM inhibitions were interpreted as effects on the alternative pathway, since in unaged axes inhibitions by SHAM were obtained only when respiratory activity had either been restricted with inhibitors of the cytochrome oxidase pathway or expanded by an uncoupler (CCCP). From the experiments with these inhibitors, it is suggested that unaged seeds utilize both respiration pathways in the cotyledon but only the cytochrome pathway in the axis. Accelerated aging causes a marked deterioration of respiration, especially that through the cytochrome pathway, and there is an associated engagement of the alternative pathway in the seed axis. It is suggested that the lowering of respiratory activity and the shift in respiratory pathways may play a major role in the decline of germinability and vigor.
