Notes: In the paper the author presents a novel point of view for the refinement and derefinement algorithms of triangular nested meshes using fractal concepts and iterated function systems (IFS). The fractal behaviour can be understood in the sense that these meshes feature a remarkable amplifying invariance under changes of magnification. Here we compare the meshes obtained by the combination of these algorithms with those presented by Bova and Carey (1992). Although both of the meshes are very similar, the current algorithms automatically build and manage sequences of nested irregular discretizations of the domain. The author illustrates here how the application of IFS families is equivalent to the use of an adaptive strategy that combines the refinement procedure with the derefinement one.

Notes: Several pyrrolidinofullerenes were N-arylated by phase-transfer catalysis in the absence of solvent. The electrochemical behaviour of the novel C60-acceptor dyads was studied by cyclic voltammetry which showed that the nitro groups on the N-phenyl ring have a strong influence on the reduction potential values. Theoretical calculations at the semiempirical PM3 level fully support the experimental redox potential values.

Notes: An X-ray study has been made of the synthetic polypeptide poly-L-ornithine hydrobromide to investigate whether, like the chemically related polypeptides poly-L-lysine and poly-L-arginine hydrochlorides, it can undergo conformational changes merely from variations in its degree of hydration. X-ray powder and fiber photographs of specimens with from half up to about three molecules of water per ornithine residue show features that suggest a “cross-β-pleated-sheet” structure. Each pleated sheet is formed from parallel chains and the sheets are piled up along the b axis. The spacings, which do not vary appreciably with hydration, can be satisfactorily indexed in terms of an orthogonal unit cell with a = 4.60 Å, b = 30.2 Å, and c = 6.64 Å. These dimensions are shown by models to be compatible with the proposed structure. Removal of the last half molecule of water results in a very diffuse pattern but on rehydration the sharp pattern reappears. Specimens containing four to nine molecules of water per residue show a quite different pattern. Reflections other than equatorial are absent in oriented diagrams except for a 5.4 Å diffuse streak across the meridian which is suggestive of an α-helical structure. Increasing the relative humidity from 86% to about 100% causes the a axis of the hexagonal unit cell to increase from 14.7 Å to 15.3 Å. On drying, the β structure reappears once again. These conformational changes are very similar to those observed in poly-L-lysine hydrochloride except that the latter shows a more stable α-helical form. This difference may be explained in terms of stabilizing hydrophobic interactions between side chains, since ornithine has a shorter side chain than lysine.

Notes: New examples of the fluxional behavior of (η3-allyl)palla-dium complexes are described. Variable-temperature experiments and line-shape analysis of two (η3-allyl)palladium complexes containing 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)azine ligands were performed in order to determine the activation free energies, enthalpies and entropies of the process. A dissociative mechanism pointing to a selective Pd-N cleavage is proposed on the basis of these results and NOE experiments above and below the coalescence temperature.

Description: Background In plasma cell neoplasms, the percentage of plasma cells in bone marrow (PPCBM) is important for diagnosis and assessment of the treatment. This quantification is performed using bone marrow multiparameter flow cytometry (FC), aspirate smears (BMA) and biopsy. Differences among the percentage of infiltration detected by these techniques have been reported, which can be related to a heterogeneous pattern of infiltration of multiple myeloma (MM) or sample quality. However, a simultaneous evaluation of these three techniques has not been reported nor their ability to detect bone marrow involvement with high or low infiltration, associated with different stages of this disease. Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the results of PPCBM obtained by FC, BMA, and biopsy with CD138 immunohistochemistry (BMB) in different stages of the disease with high and low infiltration, and the ability of these techniques to correctly classify the disease. Methods Pathological studies of patients referred to Hospital Fundación Santa Fe, Colombia were reviewed between January 2015 and June 2018. The selection of patients was based on both, a diagnosis of plasma cell neoplasms, classified according to the International Myeloma Working Group criteria and the simultaneous use of FC by FACSCanto II flow cytometer (Infinicyt 2.0 software program), wright-stained aspirate smears and biopsy with CD138 immunohistochemistry in the detection. Descriptive analysis was performed and PPCBM was expressed as the mean± standard error of the mean (SEM). The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the mean of PPCBM among the three methods. Lineal regression and Spearman´s coefficient were used to correlate the variables. Statistical association was considered significant for p values

Description: Introduction: High-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem-cell transplantation (auto-HCT) is standard of care for patients with relapsed or primary refractory classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL). Brentuximab vedotin (BV) consolidation after auto-HCT improves progression-free survival of cHL patients with primary refractory disease and high risk for relapse as seen in the AETHERA trial. There are no published reports of BV consolidation post auto-HCT in cHL patients treated in developing countries. The aim of this study is to determine the clinical outcomes and safety of BV consolidation after auto-HSCT in a cohort of Colombian patients with relapsed or refractory (R/R) cHL. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at ten tertiary referral centers in five cities in Colombia. Data from patients with R/R cHL who underwent auto-HCT followed by BV consolidation was collected and analyzed. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze patient's demographic characteristics. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to assess overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) rates and log-rank test was used to compare survival between groups. All data were analyzed by R Studio software. Results: Fifty-three patients with a confirmed diagnosis of cHL were included, 49,1% were women. Median of age at auto-HCT was 29 years (range 17 - 66). The most frequently used frontline regimen was ABVD 90,6%. Median number of treatment lines including auto-HCT was 3 (range 2 to 7). 83% of patients had BV consolidation after 1stAUtoHCT and 17% after 2 auto-HCT. The most common high-risk feature before auto-HCT was primary refractory cHL (54,7%). Responses were determined by Lugano criteria. However, unconfirmed complete responses (uCR) per 2007 IWC criteria were used due to lack of PET-CT availability of evaluation in some centers, where CT scan were used. The overall rate (ORR) before auto-HCT was 94,4% with complete response (CR) in 28,3%, uCR 20,8% and partial response (PR) in 45,3% of patients. The ORR after auto-HCT was 90,5% with CR in 52,8%, uCR in 22,6%, and PR 15,1%. Table1. A total of 531 BV cycles were administered as post auto-HCT consolidation with a median of 11 cycles (range 1-16). A median of 23 days between each cycle was documented (range 7-210 days). The most common grade 3-4 toxicities were peripheral neuropathy (18,8%), fatigue (9,4%), weight loss (5,6%). OS at 132 months was 92,5% (CI95%: 4,9 - NR) (Figure A), and the median PFS was not reached (CI 95%: 36.5 months - Not reached) with 75,5% PFS at 132 months, with a mean of follow-up of 23,5 months (Range: 4,2 - 133,2 months) (Figure B). There was a trend towards worse PFS in patients treated with ≥ 3 regimens before auto-HCT Median: 38.7 months, (CI 95%: 36.5 - NA) Vs. 2 lines: Median: NR (CI 95%: 4,2-NR) P= 0.4.(Figure C). Also patients that required a second transplant followed by BV consolidation had a worse PFS, compared to the ones that underwent BV consolidation post first auto-HCT: median: 13.6 months (CI 95%: 6.7- NR)Vs. median: NR (CI95%: 38,7 - NR) respectively p=0,009 (Figure D). Twelve patients relapsed and 4 patients died form disease progression. Conclusions: BV consolidation after auto-HCT in high-risk R/R cHL patients treated in a developing country setting seems to be a safe and effective treatment. Although OS and PFS were slightly superior to the ones reported in the AETHERA trial, the mean of follow-up in our analysis is shorter. Another shortcoming of our analysis are the inherit limitation of a retrospective cohort. These retrospective results need to be assessed in prospective trials that specifically includes Latin-American with high-risk patients with R/R cHL. Disclosures Patiño: Amgen: Speakers Bureau.
