Description: By adjusting the focus geometry of a spatially structured laser pulse, single, double, and treble quasi-monoenergetic electron beams were generated, respectively, in laser-wakefield acceleration. Single electron beam was produced as focusing the laser pulse to a single spot. While focusing the laser pulse to two spots that are approximately equal in energy and size and intense enough to form their own filaments, two electron beams were produced. Moreover, with a proper distance between those two focal spots, three electron beams emerged with a certain probability owing to the superposition of the diffractions of those two spots. The energy spectra of the multiple electron beams are quasi-monoenergetic, which are different from that of the large energy spread beams produced due to the longitudinal multiple-injection in the single bubble.

Description: The oxygen vacancy model has been used to explain the magnetic and electrical transport properties of dilute magnetic semiconductors and resistive switching. In particular, some authors have claimed that they found a symmetric peak corresponding to the oxygen vacancies in O1s photoelectron spectra. In this paper, using X-ray photoelectron spectra with argon ion etching, it is shown that this symmetric peak may also be interpreted as being related to O 1− anions, rather than to oxygen vacancies.

Description: The β -relaxation of metallic glasses (MGs) bears nontrivial connections to their microscopic and macroscopic properties. In an effort to elucidate the mechanism of the β -relaxation, we studied by dynamical mechanical measurements the change of its properties on varying the composition of La 60 Ni 15 Al 25 in various ways. The properties of the β -relaxation turn out to be very sensitive to the composition. It is found that the isochronal loss peak temperature of β -relaxation, T β , peak , is effectively determined by the total (La + Ni) content. When Cu is added into the alloy to replace either La, Ni, or Al, the T β , peak increases with decrease of the (La + Ni) content. The trend is in accordance with data of binary and ternary MGs formed from La, Ni, Al, and Cu. Binary La-Ni MGs have pronounced β -relaxation loss peaks, well separated from the α- relaxation. In contrast, the β -relaxation is not resolved in La-Al and La-Cu MGs, showing up as an excess wing. For the ternary La-Ni-Al MGs, increase of La or Ni content is crucial to lower the T β,peak . Keeping the Al content fixed, increase of La content lowers the T β , peak further, indicating the more important role La plays in lowering T β , peak than Ni. The observed effects on changing the composition of La 60 Ni 15 Al 25 lead to the conclusion that the properties of the β -relaxation are mainly determined by the interaction between the largest solvent element, La, and the smallest element, Ni. From our data, it is further deduced that La and Ni have high mobility in the MGs, and this explains why the β -relaxation in this La-based MGs is prominent and well resolved from the α -relaxation as opposed to Pd- and Zr-based MGs where the solvent and largest atoms, Pd and Zr, are the least mobile.

Description: The symmetric radiation drive is essential to the capsule implosion in the indirect drive fusion but is hard to achieve due to the non-uniform radiation distribution inside the hohlraum. In this work, the non-uniform radiation properties of both vacuum and gas-filled hohlraums are studied by investigating the angular distribution of the radiation temperature experimentally and numerically. It is found that the non-uniform radiation distribution inside the hohlraum induces the variation of the radiation temperature between different view angles. The simulations show that both the angular distribution of the radiation temperature and the hohlraum radiation distribution can be affected by the electron heat flux. The measured angular distribution of the radiation temperature is more consistent with the simulations when the electron heat flux limiter f e = 0.1 . Comparisons between the experiments and simulations further indicate that the x-ray emission of the blow-off plasma is overestimated in the simulations when it stagnates around the hohlraum axis. The axial position of the laser spot can also be estimated by the angular distribution of the radiation temperature due to their sensitive dependence. The inferred laser spot moves closer to the laser entrance hole in the gas-filled hohlraum than that in the vacuum hohlraum, consisting with the x-ray images taken from the framing camera. The angular distribution of the radiation temperature provides an effective way to investigate the hohlraum radiation properties and introduces more constraint to the numerical modeling of the hohlraum experiments.

Description: The relaxation dynamics in unfreezing process of metallic glasses is investigated by the activation-relaxation technique. A non-monotonic dynamical microstructural heterogeneities evolution with temperature is discovered, which confirms and supplies more features to flow units concept of glasses. A flow unit perspective is proposed to microscopically describe this non-monotonic evolution of the dynamical heterogeneities as well as its relationship with the deformation mode development of metallic glasses.

Description: Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate dynamic evolution in metallic glass-forming liquids during quenching from high temperature above melting point down to supercooled region. Two crossover temperatures T A and T S ( T A  〉  T S ) are identified, and their physical meanings are clarified. T A and T S are found to be not only the sign of dynamic crossover phenomena but also the manifestation of two key structure correlation lengths ξ s . As temperature decreases below T A , ξ s goes beyond the nearest-neighbor distance, resulting in the Arrhenius-to-non-Arrhenius transition of structural relaxation time and the failure of Stokes-Einstein (SE) relation. As T S is traversed, the increase rate of ξ s reaches the maximum, leading to the simultaneous appearance of dynamical heterogeneity and fractional SE relation. It is further found that structure correlation increases much faster than dynamic correlation, playing a role of structural precursor for dynamic evolution in liquids. Thus, a structural link is established for deeper understanding dynamic crossover phenomena.

Description: We present two examples of carbon nanotube network thin film transistors with strongly hydrophobic dielectrics comprising either Teflon-AF or a poly(vinylphenol)/poly(methyl silsesquioxane) (PVP/pMSSQ) blend. In the absence of encapsulation, bottom gated transistors in air ambient show no hysteresis between forward and reverse gate sweep direction. Device threshold gate voltage and On-current present excellent time dependent stability even under dielectric stress. Furthermore, threshold gate voltage for hole conduction is negative upon device encapsulation with PVP/pMSSQ enabling much improved current On/Off ratio at 0 V. This work addresses two major challenges impeding solution based fabrication of relevant thin film transistors with printable single-walled carbon nanotube channels.

Description: The heat capacity jump ΔC p at glass transition and the dynamical heterogeneity are two of the most important features of glass forming liquids. In order to reveal the intrinsic relationship between the two properties, a model glass system (Na 2 O) x (SiO 2 ) 1−x (x = 0.2–0.35) was studied by the systematic measurements of the ΔC p and the mechanical relaxation in the supercooled liquid region. A linear increase in ΔC p with increasing content of Na 2 O was found, indicating direct contributions of the locally fast dynamics around Na 2 O to ΔC p . This positive correlation between the locally heterogeneous dynamics and ΔC p was further confirmed by the dynamical heterogeneity analyses. Our results might be helpful for understanding the nature of glass transition.

Description: A topological insulator (TI) is an exotic material that has a bulk insulating gap and metallic surface states with unique spin-momentum locking characteristics. Despite its various important applications, large scale integration of TI into MOSFET technologies and its coherent transport study are still rarely explored. Here, we report the growth of high quality Bi 2 Se 3 thin film on amorphous SiO 2 /Si substrate using MBE. By controlling the thickness of the film at ∼7 nm and capping the as grown film in situ with a 2 nm-thick Se layer, largest electrostatic field effect is obtained and the resistance is changed by almost 300%. More importantly, pronounced gate-tunable weak antilocalization (WAL) is observed, which refers to modulation of α from ∼−0.55 to ∼−0.2 by applying a back gate voltage. The analysis herein suggests that the significant gate-tunable WAL is attributable to the transition from weak disorder into intermediate disorder regime when the Fermi level is shifted downward by increasing the negative back gate voltage. Our findings may pave the ways towards the development of TI-based MOSFET and are promising for the applications of electric-field controlled spintronic and magnetic device.

Description: Magneto-transport properties of SrIrO 3 thin films epitaxially grown on SrTiO 3 , using reactive RF sputtering, are investigated. A large anisotropy between the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities is found, as well as a signature of the substrate cubic to tetragonal transition. Both observations result from the structural distortion associated to the epitaxial strain. The low-temperature and field dependences of the Hall number are interpreted as due to the contribution of Coulomb interactions to weak localization, evidencing the strong correlations in this material. The introduction of a contribution from magnetic scatters, in the analysis of magnetoconductance in the weakly localized regime, is proposed as an alternative to an anomalously large temperature dependence of the Landé coefficient.
