    Notes: We report on an analyzer for elliptically polarized Lyman-α radiation (λ=121.6 nm) which has a high transmission (14%) and can be used in ultrahigh vacuum. The analyzer consists of a pile of four MgF2 plates and a MgF2 quarter-wave plate for Lyman-α light. We discuss examples for the application of this device by measurements of polarized Lyman-α light emitted after ion-atom and ion-surface collisions.

    Notes: With a novel combination of experimental approaches, ion-induced electron emission from clean polycrystalline gold bombarded with (1–5 keV/amu) H+, H+2, and H+3 has been studied by measuring total electron yields, ejected-electron energy distributions, and, in particular, electron emission statistics (ES). Evaluation of ES included corrections for backscattering of electrons from the surface of the applied solid-state electron detector. By comparing ES for atomic and molecular ions of equal impact velocities, a negative molecular effect could be clearly demonstrated. This effect was further investigated by comparing measured ES for molecular ion impact with ES synthesized from measured ES for H+ and H+2 ion impact, respectively. The quality of approximating measured ES by Poisson and Polya statistical distributions was investigated in detail and found to be generally unsatisfactory.

    Notes: Collisions of slow multicharged and highly charged ions, i.e., ions with kinetic energies up to some 10 keV, with atoms in the gas phase and with solids have been studied in detail over the last few years. A brief review is presented on some typical experiments and their results which make use of the specific features of highly charged ions in the fields of atomic spectroscopy, ion–atom collisions, and ion–solid interactions. In particular recent progress in the understanding of the interaction mechanisms of highly charged ions with solid surfaces will be discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Total electron yields γ for impact of singly or multiply charged ions (H+, He+, He2+, N3+, N4+, O5+, O6+) on clean polycrystalline gold have been accurately measured at impact energies from almost zero [exclusive potential emission (PE) range] up to 40 keV times projectile charge state q (dominant kinetic emission range). Impact energies above 10 q keV have been approached by postacceleration of ions via target biasing with up to −30 kV. Total electron yields for γ≥3 have been derived directly from the related electron number statistics (ES) with total experimental errors of ±3%. Smaller values of γ have been determined from the related ES in conjunction with measurements of the respective primary ion, and ejected-electron currents, which caused somewhat larger experimental errors of typically ±5%. At higher impact velocity discrepancies arise between results from ES-based and current-based measurements of the total electron yield, respectively, because of systematic errors of the latter method due to projectile ion reflection and/or secondary ion emission from the target surface. For differently charged ion species, a difference in γ due to the q-related PE stays almost independent of the projectile impact energy. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: ECR-heated plasmas as produced by microwave discharges in magnetic fields are now routinely utilized for production of intense singly and multiply charged ion beams. Such ECR ion sources ("ECRIS'') can be operated during extended lifetimes even with reactive working gases. Our requirement for a simple, long-lived, high current Li+ ion source for Li-CXS tokamak plasma diagnostics led to a study on plasma production with a coaxial 2.45 GHz microwave discharge (23 mm outer diameter) embedded in a variable magnetic field configuration. The chosen geometry is compatible with Li vapor production from heat pipe ovens or externally heated LiAl alloy liners, and also permits incorporation of a permanent magnet quadrupole structure for enhancing the ion confinement in the discharge region. As a first step, with a simple magnetic mirror field generated by two axially adjustable solenoids the microwave discharge properties and extractable ion beam currents have been investigated with H2, He, and Ar as feeding gases.

    Notes: By making use of effects of the image charge on projectile trajectories in scattering of a fast beam of metastable He-atoms with keV energies from an Al (111) surface under a glancing angle of incidence, we have developed a new method to analyze fast atomic beams with respect to relative populations of excited metastable states. Based on our experimental studies we propose the construction of a corresponding detector. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An interferometric measurement technique is reported by which the piezoelectric and electro- strictive properties of thin films of electrets can be determined. The frozen-in polarization can be determined from the ratio between piezoelectric and electrostriction constants of the electret film. The method is applied to a poled-polymer guest-host system consisting of a polycarbonate host and 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene dye. The frozen in polarization measured as a function of poling field agrees well with the predictions for dilute dipolar systems if an affine motion contribution is added to the established theory of the piezoelectric effect of electrets.
