    Notes: 13C magnetic resonance is used to examine molecular ordering and dynamics in the nematogen 4-cyano-benzylidene-4′-octyloxyaniline (CBOOA). A simple, self-consistent model is proposed for evaluating the nematic phase uniaxial order parameter from the large downfield chemical shifts shown by the aromatic carbons on passing from the isotropic to the nematic phase. These results are an extension of the earlier observations of Pines and Chang on the related nematogen 4-methoxy-benzylidene-4′-butylaniline (MBBA). A series of T1 relaxation measurements are also reported and the relevant nuclear couplings for analyzing these results are identified. The results are interpreted in terms of (a) molecular scale reorientational diffusion with an axially symmetric orientational distribution function and (b) reorientation by collective angular modes.

    Notes: The quasistatic thermocapillary migration of a chain of two or three spherical bubbles in an unbounded fluid possessing a uniform temperature gradient is investigated in the limit of vanishing Reynolds and Péclet numbers. The line of bubble centers is permitted to be either parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the undisturbed temperature gradient. The governing equations are solved by a truncated-series, boundary-collocation technique. Results are presented which demonstrate the impact of the presence of other bubbles on a test bubble. In the three-bubble case, a simple pairwise-additive approximation is constructed from the reflections solution, and found to perform well except when the bubbles are close to each other. Also, features of the flow topology in the fluid are explored. Separated reverse flow wakes are found in the axisymmetric problem, and other interesting structures are noted for the case in which the line of centers is perpendicular to the applied temperature gradient. The observed flow structure is shown to be the result of superposition of simpler basic flows.

    Notes: The quasistatic thermocapillary motion of a compound drop in an unbounded fluid possessing a uniform temperature gradient is analyzed. For completeness, gravitational effects are included in the treatment. The general model is formulated, and the equations for the concentric case are solved using spherical polar coordinates, while the eccentric case is handled using bispherical coordinates. Results are given for the velocity of the drop as well as that of the droplet with respect to the drop, along with useful approximations. Illustrative results are presented graphically for the thermocapillary migration of a compound drop in the special case when the droplet is a gas bubble. In addition to the velocities of the drop and the bubble, representative isotherms and streamlines also are presented which display interesting qualitative features.

    Notes: Results from experiments on the motion of a pair of air bubbles in a silicone oil under isothermal conditions as well as in a downward temperature gradient are reported. Three situations were investigated: motion driven by buoyancy, motion dominated by thermocapillarity, and motion when the gravitational force and the thermocapillary force on the larger bubble of the pair were comparable. The experimental results were found to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions from the method of reflections. When the gravitational force was slightly smaller than the thermocapillary force on the larger bubble in the pair, the larger bubble moved downward but the smaller bubble nearby was found to move upward. This counterintuitive behavior is actually consistent with expectation, and an explanation is given.

    Notes: Experiments were performed on the motion of isolated drops and bubbles in a Dow-Corning silicone oil under the action of an applied temperature gradient in a reduced gravity environment aboard the NASA Space Shuttle in orbit. Images of the interior of the test cell during these experiments were recorded on cine film and later analyzed to obtain data on the migration velocity as a function of size and the applied temperature gradient. The data are presented in scaled form. Predictions are available in the case of gas bubbles, and it is found that the scaled velocity decreases with increasing Marangoni number qualitatively as expected even though there are quantitative discrepancies. The scaled velocity also appears to approach a theoretical asymptote predicted in the limit of large values of the Marangoni number for Stokes motion. Finally, sample results from a preliminary experiment on a pair of drops are presented. They display the remarkable feature that a small drop which leads a large drop in a temperature gradient can significantly retard the motion of the large trailing drop while itself moving as though it is virtually unaffected by the presence of the large drop. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: Wireless based custom built aerosol sampling network is designed, developed, and implemented for environmental aerosol sampling. These aerosol sampling systems are used in field measurement campaign, in which sodium aerosol dispersion experiments have been conducted as a part of environmental impact studies related to sodium cooled fast reactor. The sampling network contains 40 aerosol sampling units and each contains custom built sampling head and the wireless control networking designed with Programmable System on Chip (PSoC™) and Xbee Pro RF modules. The base station control is designed using graphical programming language LabView. The sampling network is programmed to operate in a preset time and the running status of the samplers in the network is visualized from the base station. The system is developed in such a way that it can be used for any other environment sampling system deployed in wide area and uneven terrain where manual operation is difficult due to the requirement of simultaneous operation and status logging.
