Magnetic susceptibility measurements have been made on three ACuBr3 or A'Cu2Br6 salts containing bibridged Cu2Br2−6 dimers. All show antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling. With A=piperidinium, chains of dimers exist, defining an alternating AFM chain with J/k=−9 K and α=0.9. In the salts with A=ethanolammonium and A'=melaminium, stacks of dimers occur and the coupling within the dimers is found to be J/k=−64 and −113 K, respectively. The value of J/k in these Cu2Br62− dimers is found to correlate roughly with the deviation from planarity of the dimers with maximum AFM coupling occurring when the dimers are planar. The antiferromagnetic contribution to the exchange coupling is found to be considerably larger than in the corresponding Cu2Cl2−6 dimers. This is related to the lowering of the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer energy when chloride is replaced by bromide.
